Maguire | he stays!

What the hell is the club doing here? If he wanted a pay off to go to West Ham, pay it.

Now we are stuck with him for at least another year, with his value decreasing by the day and still paying his salary.

How do we benefit from having him in the squad? He will only be used for early round cup games and late sub appearances. I would much rather have Evans playing that role. At least he wont be mocked by fans, both United or opponents.

Shaw, Malacia and possibly Varane already injured. No money available for a new defender either. If Maguire goes we are one injury away from playing McTominay at CB. Harry is mediocre but he is a hell of a lot better than playing someone out of position, hopefully the Glazers are gone by Christmas and we can fix this with new owners in the January window.

We would have no money for a replacement if we paid him 15m to leave and we have an injury crisis in defence right now

Either we sell and buy a replacement or we decline any loan move

Two weeks ago it was said United (or Ten Haag) feel they'll struggle to bring in a replacement in time if he's sold.

Looking at how little movement we've been able to create since then makes me believe there's no way we'll sell him and get someone else within two days.

Would it have been 15mil ?

I believe he has 3 years left on his contract. He is on 190k a week at United.

If West Ham had offered him 140k a week, it would have left a salary defacit of 50k a week. 50k a week over 3 years is 7.8mil.

To say we wanted 15mil to leave would imply that West Ham would only be offering around 90k a week, which seems on the very low end.

Maybe we get lucky next summer

That is what was reported. He was reportedly offered crica £6m payoff and he declined. Also West Ham definitely from reports didn't offer him anything over 100k

I feel no spite towards Harry Maguire, but I'm glad we didn't just pay him millions to leave. If he wants to warm the bench and jeopardise his England career, he has every right to do so and I don't begrudge him a penny of the contract he signed. If, after failing to reach the required standard at United he has to drop down a level or two to get a game, then I don't see why we subsidise that. He either thinks he can elevate himself from 5th choice centre-back or has abandoned what's left of his career to enjoy the riches of his contract.

You take the 30mil, minus the pay off and you have money to spend.

It may not be enough for Pavard or Tobido if the selling clubs wanted the fee upfront, but United could have spread the payments over a few years.

Not that it should be fan driven, but we have a player who everyone knows the fans want rid of. Many resent him for refusing the leave.

Next summer, he will have two years left on his contract. He will be worth much less after spending a year on the bench and he will still want the pay out. Plus, the buying club will offer him an even smaller salary, thus meaning we have to pay more of the salary shortfall.

I also dont begrudge him wanting for money he was promised when signing the contacts.

But from Uniteds perspective, he is a depreciating asset. Every day we are paying for him and he is worth less and less.
He is costing us 10mil a year and by us not agreeing to pay some of that off, we forfeit the 30mil transfer fee.
Better to offload and recoup some of that money than him do a Phil Jones.

Nicely put. He is effectively paying roulette with his future. West Ham was a solid option for him. I'm not so sure there will be that many good options for him in January or next summer once teams have purchased alternatives and Maguire has spent a season on the bench.

It may cost United money in the long run for Maguire, but the alternative would have been setting a terrible precedent where every player we want to move on would expect massive compensation from us.

Always thought it was unlikely he'd leave this window. CB wasnt a priority.

This.

Its common sense. We all knew this from the beginning of the transfer window, and if amateurs can see this car crash of a decision, I wonder why United cant.

I totally get that, but if we pay him off, we're only getting £22m and at that price, we're going to struggle to bring someone in of any quality at all. Maybe everyone is just getting burnt here, but perhaps it will encourage Harry Maguire and his agent to be more realistic when a bid from a mid-to-relegation level team in January.

Chelsea were on the hunt for him apparently last season when they were buying everything that moved.
I remember a link this season, not last season but maybe I just didn’t notice: either way I don’t believe they would have signed him.

Seems odd we wouldn’t explore it further if true but Maguire is often quoted as saying he wants to stay and fight for his place.

Agree, £22m doesn't get you much. But neither does nothing, which is what he will be worth in a couple of years.

He probably knows rightly though with uniteds injury record it won't be long until he will be playing.

Problem is that we no longer have any room under FFP without creating it. The break even point on Harry is 26M and so a net of 22M actually leaves a shortfall in accounting terms. Without debating this point all over again the fact is that our owners are not going to inject any capital and so if we sell Harry at the figures quoted there will be zero budget to replace him.

Surprised we did not manage to get rid of him. Always thought it would work out. Was really hoping for Todibo.

But we're also making big "profits" in FFP terms selling Henderson and other Academy players, you'd think we could tank a loss of 6-10m£... then again maybe not, the club is certainly acting like there's no penny to spare. It's bound to happen that a decade of bad choices in player spending would compound and be felt down the road.

Recon the media will do one more round on this before Thursday night...squeeze the last few clicks before the window closes.

Good stuff!

Not quite. The breakeven point without a replacement is 3m (plus any one-time payoff), as explained below:

A is wrong. £3m is the breakeven point for Maguire if we weren't purchasing a replacement. (-£26m book value writedown offset by £10m wage savings + £13m amortization savings)

If we were to sign a replacement for £30m at £100k/week for 5 years, the FFP breakeven point on this year's books would go up to £14m (£3m + £6m replacement transfer fee amortization + £5m replacement wages).

He's 1 injury in the defence away from being back in the first team. If we'd been in a position to bring in his replacement before the accepted bid from West Ham, then there would have been a much greater chance of him leaving. He had a strong hand in knowing we couldn't move on a replacement and that effectively kept him within a good chance of getting enough games again this year.

And we can't do that, because we don't have money for it.

Just play Bailly ahead of him. Can't be worse than him.

Harry has abandoned any career he has left for money and/or delusion.
His advisors/agents are useless if they value his remaining ‘career’.

On a serious note, it’s like Madonna believing she’s gonna be bigger than Taylor Swift because she was there first.
Harry, please understand when your time at the top is done.

Surely even Southgate can't still pick him but considering he's in the faves club he probably will

With fans generally resenting him for not leaving the club, I wonder if he'll get boo'd if/when he plays..

With Varane and Shaw out, we are one injury away from playing a youth teamer? Maguire has a part to play. We should just bear with it.

If he's left out of Southgate's squad on Thursday I think he'll go same day.
Come on Southgate you know you can do it!

The report said he wanted a £7m payoff to make up the difference in loss of earnings over the two contracts. £15m is a ridiculous figure and seems to be from the rags. I still think we should have paid it, unless we literally couldn't have even reinvested the £30m. But I don't see why we couldn't have? Pavard just went for £25m.
