Maguire | he stays!

I get that he's got a contract and would 'lose' out on a lot of money if he just took West Ham's offer, but it does feel incredibly cheeky fighting for that payout after his performances the last couple of seasons.

It somehow just seems thickheaded. I'm not sure he really thinks that far. He just sees the money-bag in front of him and don't think much more about it, until a new problem (hate from the fanbase and no place for England presents itself).

Never on the front-foot, not in real life neither it seems.
I can’t believe he doesn’t have the awareness to know what he’s setting himself up for - if not him then at least concerned family members will make him aware, surely.

If he has the nerve to hold out, why is he so meek on the pitch?

But it says the deal is already off…
It's off in the same way Jassim's bid for the club is off.

West Ham are registering their annoyance with the process without actually pulling out. The bid is simply in limbo at this stage. There's still plenty of time - and desire from all parties - to push this through.

He'll end up one of the least popular United players ever when he does eventually feck off.

I don't get why players are so desperate to keep their wages if the next move offers less.

- Is there really that much difference between earning £190k a week and £100k a week?
- You got a move to one of the world's best, hence the wage, but you have failed there. Therefore you don't deserve those wages.

Yes there is a massive difference between 190k and 100k a week. It's nearly double.

And that's the point of a contract. It provides both club and players a level of stability. Players can (and do) make life plans based on an expectation of a certain amount of money that comes in. Clubs can plan expenditure better knowing outflows are fixed (to some degree, bonuses and what not).

He may have failed from a sporting perspective but that isn't a good enough reason for him to unilaterally shaft himself. He's entitled to, or DESERVES every dime agreed in his contract in the time frame stipulated, as long as he abides by club rules. If we want him out that badly, we'll need to come up with the cash to make it make sense. And if he values being a United player that much to miss out on regular football, tough luck. Will teach us to be more wise in future acquisitions.

I think some of the comments from him thinking highly of himself while being the United-captain also showed he was really just detached from reality. Of course he has to say he has confidence and that he can lead and so on, but it's almost as if he's build up a facade/lie and now has started to believe it all. Then the cracks start to show when he plays and he gets nervous. He's just not meant for such a big stage. His football-level is not good enough to give him natural confidence at a club of United's size.

It's not like he has a reputation to care about. Fair play to him.

Very disappointing turn of events. It is in his best interests to leave the club and our best interests too. I’d be happy for the club to negotiate a severance pay, probs want less than 7m though.

The club do have the power to make his life difficult if he chooses to stay though. We can make sure that Harry will not play for England at the Euro’s by not selecting him for the match day squads, effectively ending his career here regardless of whether he is employed or not. If he still chooses to sit and take the money then he’s allowed to do that and that is on him, but would hope that his sporting pride would make him choose differently.

They actually have other targets

But it says the deal is already off…
Literally the first paragraph of the article:
"Harry Maguire’s £30m move to West Ham has collapsed after the club grew tired of waiting for the defender to agree his exit from Manchester United. Although there is a chance the deal could be revived, it is not going ahead at the moment."

Except there has never been a suggestion that he'd be moving clubs because he wants to. It's because the club wants to move him on so they can sign another centre back. All the noises out of his side have always been that he wants to stay and fight for his place.
Fair point, but it has been made clear to him he's 4th choice, so he has to hope for an injury crisis or up his levels significantly to even become 3rd choice at this point. If he's fine with that, great, but prepare for another season with a whopping 8 starts and see how that helps you.

Yeah you would think the lure of playing regular football was a big enough incentive for Harry.

But I would say his management team would be the ones pushing for this payoff. Modern day footballers rarely think for themselves.

Another one to add to Arnold and Murtough's failures if they can't move him.
I’m sorry but, even though I’ve been critical of Murtough and co in the past, you cannot put this on them. They can’t make clubs buy him, and also if he’s making unreasonable demands in terms of payoff, you can’t expect them to bow down to him. Plus they would have to get that payoff signed off by the Glazers.

But there are also related articles which say (quite unsurprisingly) that WHU are now working on other targets (even naming a couple of CBs). It is obvious that if WHU buys someone else, deal will never be revived :)

Also, they didn't sanction his wages.

There is a possibility that Maguire has another club lined up or interested that he prefers to West Ham. Similar to the news of Elanga rejected Everton before finding out he was going to Forest....I hope.

Wonder if Southgate would have the balls to drop him should this stance continue.

I appreciate he feels entitled to receive the difference in his current contract and the contract offered by West Ham, but it is ultimately a career decision for him.

If he values the bag over playing time and potentially his international football career then he should absolutely stay and ride it out, that's on Manchester United's executives in 2019.

If he wants to re-establish himself and play football, then the 'severance' package shouldn't be a sticking point.

Good luck to him either way, but I don't think he has any hope in starting more than 10 games for United if he stays, and that's completely on merit.

I wouldn't even let this guy play with the youth team now - he should be left to assist with Voldemort's individual training sessions now. We can let the press in to watch hours of the nameless one sending him sprawling on the floor and then setup a webcam to cover it every day, telling Harry it carries on and on until he agrees to a move on OUR terms

He’s entitled to the money if he wants to stay as 4th choice and risk missing international tournaments.

He hasn’t really fulfilled his side of the contract in putting in performances worth that £190k a week, hence the only option for him to move is to a team that can’t afford that wage.

It’s the same issue with Henderson. You haven’t progressed enough to fulfill that wage, so you either lower your wage expectations and join a club that matches your talent, or you accept that you’re not going to play and make up the numbers at a big club to get your bigger salary.

Oh I'd say it's probably clear he's 5th choice when everyone is fit, let alone 4th. But that doesn't alter the fact that if him and his family are settled in the area, and if he does have a misguided belief that he could turn it round at United then he is entitled to the money, particularly given he's remained professional throughout and not given any indication he wants to leave. I wouldn't want to live in, around or frankly anywhere near London, so I can understand why he'd be reluctant to move without being fully compensated.

What do you think DoFs do exactly? Answer emails?

Apparently no room for a brain in that giant head of his. Rotting on the bench is going to do wonders for his career, if he even makes it onto the bench to begin with.

United fans sounding like Barca fans last year here..."no, he should take a paycut for the club". Bollocks to that. As if ye'd take a voluntary pay cut to go do your job in a shittier place.

Exactly. 7m is a lot of money. United gave him the big contact, he doesn't want to go, its up to united to find a solution, otherwise its another winston bogarde.

Didn't we leak out very similar articles about looking at other targets two or three days before we announced the signing of Mount? It's no coincidence that this first got out via a journalist with known connections to the West Ham hierarchy and then immediately to Sky, who they've also been known to leak to in the past.

Really terrible news. Hopefully we can still find a solution.

Maguire should get some incentive in both stick and carrot. He should get some money for leaving, at the same time, we should absolutely make clear to him that he has played his last match for us.

The only way Maguire leaves is if ETH stops picking even as a bench option which we shouldn’t have done last night at all, we had Lindelof on the bench and could have used Evans as well if really needed as well.

Right now England have got Stones as first choice then Colwill, Tomori, Guehi, Dunk, White, Gomez, Tarkowski, Mings and Chalobah whilst Walker and Shaw can also both play there so that’s 12 players not including Maguire so if Maguire isn’t playing then Southgate won’t pick him regardless of his love for him.

If Colwill keeps progressing you’d fancy him to be Stones centre back partner by the start of next year especially with him being a natural left footer and being very good on the ball whilst Tomori is playing CL football and learning a different style from playing in Italy which is a famously defensive league so they’d be your first three in my opinion so Maguire is only hurting himself from his stubbornness.
