Maguire | he stays!

Severance pay? Huh?
He’s on £190k a week for the next 2 years with his United contract. He’s not going to forget £10m to join West Ham so we will pay the difference.

We are still getting a transfer fee which helps FFP, he gets the compensation for the contract we signed with him. We’re also saving £100k a week.

Can't blame Maguire for his time at the club really it falls down to the Hierarchy and the manager who sanctioned the move at the given time. Quality wise you can't go from the standard this club has set at its most competitive in Rio / Vidic to Maguire / Lindlelof.

Further to this, one issue typically associated with United has been the romanticism to hold underperforming players for too long a period to the extent they diminish their remaining value or become immovable due to wages. Harry unfortunately was in such a situation. It's not all fun and games however because the way the club spends the money on his replacement will either show strategic improvement in the hierarchy or it will anaesthetize the issue further. It's an opportunity to kill two birds with one stone, replace Maguire with a player of sufficient quality and get an understudy to an ageing injury prone Varane. It's up to Murtough and co to deliver on this aspect.

Hope he does well at West Ham. Continuing to be a meme would suck.

On what planet is Maguire a worse signing than Pogba?

Maguire cost 80m and it looks like we will recoup between a third and half of that fee

Pogba cost 89M and we got nothing for him, I'm pretty sure he earned a lot more than Maguire did as well

I don't think signings are solely assessed on what you recoup. We got more out of Pogba - even if the potential wasn't fulfilled - on the pitch than we got out of Maguire, imo.

Pointless debate anyway. I'm bringing the champers out when he pops up at West Ham

Severance pay? Huh?

It's more of a "I will only accept a lower salary at West Ham if you pay the difference I am losing out on with my remaining years here". That's unless West Ham match the salary he's currently on.

As corrosive as we perceive Pogba to have been he did more in his 1st year than Maguire did was really my point. Neither are transfers to write home about but I remember when Harry got the captaincy that ‘my captain’ nonsense when he’d never shown any leadership before, during or since.

At its conception a record transfer for Pogba at that time is understandable, it just went as badly as it could. Maguire however was never a good piece of business.

On the pitch his non-existent leadership & in a number of cases, shambolic displays were as corrosive as anything we’ve seen post Fergie for me.
Yeah I think the Pogba comparison is a bad one, given he at least had world class game-changing moments, which is harder as a defender, admittedly.

I guess recouping none of the huge fee for Pogba, particularly after how he left the first time, meant that transfer was a cluster in different ways.

Not exactly. There's a big difference in getting £10m over two years to getting a lump sum.

He'll probably get £4-5m in a one off payment. Which in addition to his signing fee with West Ham will be a massive windfall.

What's the difference, apart from considering the time value aspect (at nominal interest rates)?

How many years are on his contract? We’ll basically be paying him £4m per year to cover the loss in wages

He's been here 4 years.
Had to check if it was a 5 year plus 1 year option or straight 6.
Unfortunately looks to be a straight 6.
So assuming we'll have to suck up paying up to 8m of the wage loss? Surely not. Will have to come to an agreement.⁹

I was almost caught out by a spoof link that said he signed a 6 year extension ..this summer

They have roughly the same productivity

It is not just about productivity though, Antony is just wasteful unfortunately, he is always getting on the ball and never shying away, always trying to make something happen.

Sancho hides away and sometimes you don't notice he is playing, he ghosts through games.

I would prefer the wasteful player that is always trying to make things happen, because eventually things will come off.

He will most likely get the entire difference otherwise he could refuse to move.
We will still get a transfer fee. And we would have still paid him 190 k for two more years, now we will save more than half of it.
West Ham will most likely make him one of their highest paid players offering him 100k/120 k. We will give him the difference, so 70-90 k per week for two years. Sign on fee from West Ham he will get but will be relatively low.

Assuming we are talking gross salary here, you’re saying he’s going to be happy to give up £5m United Agreed to pay him to move to West Ham?

What is up with hate towards Moyes? He was completely out of depth of course but he was here 7-8 months failed and got fired. He didn't have enough time to do major damage (as Solskjaer did for example).

Did Moyes bashed club after he was fired or something?

Fixed it for you.

No idea, if they’re paying him £100k a week I’d be surprised if his signing on bonus is £5m
The transfer is pretty low in the current market, you’d expect they’d offer him a sweetener otherwise they have no reason to even place a bid in the first place.

Looking forward this being reported as a €40m sale. Oh wait that only happens when we buy someone.

I agree with the West Ham fans. Awful for signing for them. Moyes being an idiot.

Didn't rate him before he joined United. Not that impressed even before he fell to pieces here.

All he can do is head clear crosses, other than that he is just an ordinary PL CB. The idea that he is good in possession is just comical. He takes forever to pass the ball, no pace on his passes.

Expect him to be underwhelming for West Ham.

Positive for United that he is gone. Terrible signing for United. What was Solskjaer thinking ?

West Ham will be perfect for him, moyes plays a low defensive block, likes to have a two man double pivot midfield, with one screening the CBs.

Wouldnt suprise me if moyes made him captain.

Don't think many have hate for him but It was appointment that shook the very foundations of the club almost a carbon copy of what Liverpool did in the early 90s with another out of his depth Scottish chap. United 13 years on still haven't fully recovered that appointment and don't blame Moyes such blame lays at the feet of Woodward and Co.

In a weird way, I’m happy for him. That first year he was great, played the most football in the world. A series of bad events for the guy, hope he finds form and happiness at West Ham.

Didn't that ExWHUEmployee guy say that the total fee was £37m? I think that additional 7m fee is for the severance pay of Maguire and we would get that 30m fee. I think that is why we had reports of 30m being rejected yesterday and the same fee got accepted today.

Not hate but sheer incompetence. Thiago, Fellaini, Baines, strange press meets , Jageilka bits , firing the trusted lieutenants of SAF etc.

I mean if it was just him being out of depth I can understand .

To be honest that's the best conclusion possible at that point.
I'm surprised United got 30m£ back (excluding all the finer points of possibly subsidizing wages, etc), I seriously expected he would only have buyers next year in the 15m£ range.

Also best for him as a player and it makes some sense for Moyes and West Ham too (honest opinion they overpaid but heh).

It's a little simplistic to say one £ in is one £ to spend but 25-30m£ should cover most of the fee for an interesting CB profile (not the finished article). HarMagz absolutely need replacing in the squad, no matter how low one's opinion of his contribution was.

I don’t have any animosity toward Moyes in general, but I do understand if other people do. He was handpicked by SAF and supposed to be the chosen one (haha) who followed the footsteps of the legend. Turned out to be a big dud. I think a lot of people associated him with the start of United’s decade of underperformance didn’t help.

Great news for all parties. Was an awkward situation that needed to end. Hope it works out for him

Kicked off our decline with arrogant and incompetent decisions and he has moaned about us frequently since he was fired.

Savage was a free transfer and I think the Bishop fee was nominal at best but Laird and Iqbal were in the range mentioned. We also got 75k from our sell on clause for Dylan Levitt so it blows my mind that we have not bid for Mbappe yet.
Who told you Savage was a free transfer?

For all the hate Maguire gets, this just might be the best thing he's done at the club and you have to respect him for that.

So we get 30M and we pay him a severance fee out of that. Wonder how high that is.
Usually when a player moves they don't get severance do they? Sounds like this is the club forcing him out if we're going to pay him if I understand it correctly.

I think it's become a stupid cliche for United fans to call every player that's rightly criticized for poor performance a "scapegoat".

"Oh wonder who the next scapegoat will be?" implies that players don't deserve to be slated when they play like shite.

It doesn't imply that. Sometimes criticism gains momentum.

30m is a very good price and job well done negotiating that fee for him

I know they are looking at guys like Pavard and such....i still think the priority should be using that money to bring in another CM or attacking player
