Madrid's deliberate red cards

Only Mourinho will send a team out with this set of instructions really. He is that detailed. I remember Robben interview about Mourinho and he stressed on how the guy made sure every player got a file about potential defenders they were going to face, their tendencies, apparent weakness and strength and what each of their players had to do for the next match. He said it was a thick folder as well.

It was mentioned in the post match analysis that Madrid have done it before, so clearly not.

A lot of teams and a lot of managers have done that. and if you are from Brazil you should know this is common in south american football

In cases like this the player often takes the decision upon himself, it's rare a manager would (or even could) pass on such instructions.

A bit off topic but nevertheless that was Vilas Boas who would put them together, they are now apart so who knows if this is still the case.

The funny thing here is that some people actually believe Sir Alex Ferguson doesn't do that. all managers talk their players about wich players of the other team are injured, with a yellow card, not 100% fit, their weakness, etc...

It's against the spirit of the game, cheating really. It's an inevitable consequence of having dead rubber matches though.

Just look at this, from Marca.

Absolutely, the only question is probably the level of detail that's each manager uses, whilst partnered with Vilas Boas it is known the level of detail was astronomical, whereas say a Harry Redknapp (just an example) might just leave it at "run at him he's the weak link" instead of finding each players precise weaknesses.

I don't know what SAF does, but Robben said it with an air of amazement, the impression I got was that it went above and beyond what is normally done. He cited an example of what everybody did during a corner kick to make sure Terry got the ball based on the defenders they were facing, who had to block the keeper, who had to step on a foot, and in most cases guess who did all the dirty work? Ricardo Carvalho.
I am frantically googling to find the link, it was probably in 2005.

Blaming Mourinho for this just shows you have a vendetta against him, Madrid have been doing this for years.

They've been doing it for a while. I remember Roberto Carlos and Figo trying to get carded to miss a game a while back. They were tugging the shirts of players all game just to get a yellow and the ref eventually gave in. Not just a Mourinho thing, but Madrid have done it under Del Bosque as well as many other teams in South America.

How is it "clever" btw?

It was hardly a masterful stroke of genius, was it? It was just a couple of gimps cheating in a feeble and obvious way to get themselves sent off.

If that passes as clever then what exactly do you have to do to be stupid?

Can't they review the punishment and ban them for 3 games or something?

Clever, don't have a problem with it.

Pretty much agreed.

I hate the yellow card rule anyway, Its fundamentally flawed and routinely ends up with the totally wrong conclusion eg: Fletcher missing the CL final.

Alonso's acting was clever, it was even better than Eastenders

Unsportsmanship. But I don't expect you to understand that since you have no clue about what it means.

What surprised me was that Ronaldo did not go and try and get himself sent off either.

It's not something nice to see from 2 world cup winners and good players but I'm not disgusted as the commentator I was listening to last night. It's football, it's the rules. If you can find your way around them without breaking them then IMO there's no problem.
Maybe things gotta change but I wouldn't want them tbh

Yes, Gary Birtles actually ran out of words to express his disgust and certainly the way it was done was both farcical and embarrassing for such a great club and for the game. However, on reflection, the root cause of this problem is a ludicrous rule that could easily be amended, most simply by wiping out all cards except straight reds after the group stages.

Using the rules to your advantage. Not great sportsmanship, but its just common sense.

The Luis Suarez scenario. It's not exactly sporting, but it's the rules. Use them to your advantage. If UEFA punishes them, it's completely ridiculous because there has never been anything saying this is illegal to do.

I personally prefer Madrid to Barca (funnily enough), but it must be said: if Iniesta and Alves had done it for Barcelona, it would have been a tirade of abuse towards them on here.

Oh how I would love to see him get sent off. He is an absolute cnut of a player, probably the biggest cheat in world football and I have seen plenty including some in our own ranks

He really is a disgusting player...looks to cheat at every opportunity regardless of the match situation.

I hope United never do this..

I don't believe this.If we are in the same situation wouldn't you want to have 2 important players without yellow cards when the knockout stages start ?
I really don't get why are some so shocked. It's always been part of the CL, it's not the first time it's happened and it surely won't be the last time if rules aren't changed

I would have no problem if one of our players did the same...kick the ball away, or delay the game, to earn a yellow.

Surely he isn't more of a cheat than Busquets

They're both really annoying. Busquets is total cheat. Alves seems to be an annoying individual more than anything. He has this air of arrogance which doesn't come across too well. Some can carry it off well and some can't. He just looks like a prick.

I had no problem with it when Becks did it against Wales (in fact I thought it was quite sensible/clever) so It'd be hypocritical to have something against it now.

It's not really cheating, they aren't getting away with anything.
