Maarten Stekelenburg

Apparently he's learning the language. Or is it that our goalkeeping coach have taken up Spanish lessons according to reports?

The Mail said Steele was learning Spanish. But De Gea speaks English

So we'll have the new Schmeichel and the new VDS competing for our goalkeeper's position....;).

On a serious note, De Gea is too young for that position and would probably cost us a bomb. I wouldnt mind if United gives Stekenburg a try. We dont need a world class shot stopper. What we need is someone who's great on crosses and decent in kicking/ball control.

He's not really that good though. I'd simply prefer a better goalkeeper.

I thought he had a superb world cup. Not seen much of him at Ajax but he was one of the keepers of the tournament. I'd be more than happy if he was our number 1.

Did look decent in the world cup so wont be a bad choice and will be better than PIG.

I hear he is 6 foot 7 inches tall too so should be quite dominating in the air.

Keepers are a bit of a gamble. Some do well, some do shit. VDS was magnificent with us but in Italy he is known as Van Papera (Van duck). Barthez was rated as one of the best keepers in the world and yet he was nowhere near as that unknown talent signed from Bronby.

I haven't watched Stekelenburg long enough to give an opinion about him. What I do believe is that, if he's got experience, he is excellent in air, he's a decent shotstopper + he's good in kicking the ball then I think that he's got a realistic chance of making it at OT. The rest is all a matter of character. Is he able to handle the pressure of playing with one of the biggest clubs in the world? God knows.

I don't like quiet goalkeepers, and he seems too quiet on the field to me.

Edwin isn't exactly a shouty kind of 'keeper.

Sure he'll have a word with defenders when something goes wrong but so does Stekelburg.

Somehow, it just feels like another Bosnich signing to me if we indeed have him lined up to replace VDS. Just a feeling.

I've not been banging the drum for Stekelenburg but he's a much better 'keeper than Bosnich.

to be fair Bosnich wasn't a bad keeper but his kicking was awful and had problems off field. some of the saves he made that season was amazing.

I always got the feeling it was a signing the board made though because he was on a free.

Bosnich gets very harsh treatment on here. He was, barring his kicking, a very very good keeper. Not as good as VDS obviously, but better than any of the other keepers we had during that period (including Barthez). Injuries destroyed him from the moment he joined us, and then his off-field problems started.

I wouldn't be too disappointed with the choice of Stekelenburg. He probably is my third choice after Neuer and De Gea, but he seems to be a very good keeper too, and he's the most experienced of all three, while being 12 years younger than VDS. I think he'd do well.

This guy has bags of experience, he has played nearly 200 games for Ajax, and 40 odd games for Holland, and he is 6 foot 6. He ticks all the boxes for a ready made replacement for VDS, I personally would be pleased if he comes, and he would come for at least a third of Neuers price tag!

I don't understand people giving the low cost as a plus. Unless it means we fork out for some incredible midfielder the savings don't help us (the fans) at all.

According to reports in Germany, Schalke are looking at Stekelenburg as a potential replacement for Manuel Neuer, who is on the verge of moving to Bayern Munich in a deal worth around 20m Euros.

Well hopefully Stekelenburg was watching the CL Semi Final and made his mind where he would rather be going!

Three top English clubs will be in the hunt for a keeper this summer you feel

Us
Arsenal
Tottenham

No doubt Stekelenburg will end up at one of these three clubs

Nah, I sure Arsene will stick with Schenezy ( or however you spell it ) and Fabianski as a back up. He's going to be a top keeper, and he's not too far off at the moment

True, he does seem to have made the number 1 spot his own recently - he was solid against us the other week. Stekelenburg would be a good improvement for them though, if they want to win trophies, they need to have someone experienced in goal

This Stekelenburg character does seem like the safest bet but we'll be settling for "alright" rather than brilliant which could lead to another Barthez/Caroll/Howard period.

I'm not sure there's too much between Stekelenburg and our own T.Kuszczak if I'm being honest.

I'm surprised at the no. of people who watch Ajax regularly tbh.

Me too, I'm dutch and have several friends who support ajax passionately and pull me to the bar to watch them every now and then, but it looks like redcafe is full of dutch football experts :)

I am so happy to hear that. Schalke can have him.

Yes I have.

Something tells me if we had an Ajax fan here you'd not voice your opinion with such confidence. Speaking of Ajax fans, here's a Ajax newbie's opinion on it:

Rumours are getting stronger and stronger that he will be Uniteds next No 1. Been reading the Stekelenburg thread in the mains, and the consensus is that, well, people do not want him here. I am very amazed by this. He's been our goalkeeper for 6 years now and the devleopment he has made in the last 2 years has been incredible. He is dominant in the air, has an incredible reflex, is very good with two feet, nerves of steel and has the perfect age for a goalkeeper. My guess is that, if he weill indeed go to United, he will be first keeper here for many, many years.
