Maarten Stekelenburg

never mind the trophy, it looks like sponge bob square pants dutch cousin is sitting to the left of the driver!

Maybe I'm in the minority here but when we signed VDS did anyone back then think OMG we've signed the best keeper in the world? He wasn't a flashy keeper like Cech was back then, he wasn't known as this great shot stopper like Casillas in fact I wasn't ever being blown away by any of his performances at Fulham with the stand out moment of his Fulham career for me being done by Reyes.....

All that being said with a United shirt on for me VDS has been the best keeper in the world now for at least 5 years and the best keeper United have ever had, so who knows maybe Stekelenburg is the best man for the job, being the Dutch number 1 isn't a bad thing to have on your reseme after all....

I've remained unconvinced about De Gea all through the speculation, firstly he seems to tick the same boxes as Reina, Casillas, Cech (at his best) in that he may make some unbelievable saves but what VDS has proved after going through the years after Schmeichel left is that experience is key and having the experience to not let a mistake ruin your United career like it did with Howard & Foster, I'm not convinced that a 20 year old that doesn't seem keen on moving as it is, going for such a large fee will have broad enough shoulders to not let a high profile mistake get the better of him with the media spotlight that will be on him.

Stekelenburg may at first glance be an underwhelming signing but who knows how good he could turn out to be?

This thread could very well end up looking a lot like the Ed threads from 05. In fairness, it seems the most outlandish allegations against Stekelenburg have died down somewhat.

If we're getting Stekelenburg for the quoted 6-7 mils then i'd buy him over De Gea right now, Stekelenburg can turn out to be a very good keeper for us and will save big bucks and if he turns out to be average we can very well get De Gea in few years time as he's still only 20.

Arsenal and Manchester United - Maarten Stekelenburg will reject new contract as move appears close

Dutch goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg will reject a new contract at Ajax, swelling rumours of a possible move away, according to ESPN soccernet.

The £15 million rated keeper's current deal runs out next year, after the Dutch Champions offered the 28-year-old a new deal until 2015.

But with Arsenal and Manchester United prowling, Stekelenburg is expected to put them on red alert by rejecting a new deal.

"We are obviously listening to what Ajax want. They have always been a good employer and we have a good relationship," his agent, Rob Jansen, told Algemeen Dagblad.

"However, Maarten has clearly set his sights on a transfer to a good club in a bigger league."

Arsenal has seen goalkeeping problems undermine their title challenge this season, while United, who beat The Gunners to the title, need to replace the retiring Edwin van der Sar.

Both Arsenal and United, like Ajax, who confirmed the Dutch title after beating FC Twente at the weekend, will both be able to offer the World Cup runner-up, Champions League football.

I'd really expect at least a "one of the biggest clubs in the world" if he was heading to us

How do we even know that Niemi wouldnt have done well here?

Because he's Schwarzer/Jaaskeleinen class? Because we saw how he struggled in his final season at Southampton? Because...well I'm not really sure why I'm arguing it really, the reasoning's all very obvious so you chose to ignore that when asking the question, so I've got no hope!

How do you know?

That was the question. You can speculate but you dont know.

There have been plenty of players who have done well at top clubs but might not look out of the ordinary at other lesser clubs. Park for example if he was playing for a team like West Brom.

Any player of any quality can have a poor time for a season

He's a bit like Jussi at Bolton. Good at that level, but nobody ever thought he was near the best GKs around.

Agree, Gill did mention that they have been working on a deal for months so that would indicate it is De Gea.

Or Stekelenburg's been told to keep quiet so he's doing just that. Probably is De Gea though.

He's not keeping quiet though! If anything he's sending a come and get me plea.

Manchester United target Maarten Stekelenburg has revealed he is considering a contract offer from Ajax, while admitting he would be 'insane' to turn down the Red Devils.

The 28-year-old goalkeeper has been linked with a move to the Barclays Premier League champions for several months, but appears to be ready to put an end to speculation regarding his future.

"I have received a fantastic offer from Ajax which is under consideration," the Dutchman told NUsport magazine.

"There has been nothing else, zero. Maybe because I have been injured."

But, when asked about a potential move to Old Trafford, Stekelenburg added: "Anybody who does not want to play for Manchester United would be insane."

He's not the target.

Wow Arsenal are having a real tough time in the market this summer. Players seem to be rejecting them left and right.

Haven't seen much of him recently but certainly from what I've seen previously he's more than good enough to play at Fulham's level.

He was linked to us strongly a little over two years ago.

just read this on the net. a very good deal for fulham, maybe the jol connection ease the deal trough.

Schwarzer is out of contract and i guess the newly promoted clubs or anyone battling against relegation with an average keeper could get him now. he might be 40 but is still good enough for a lower mid table premiership team.
