Maarten Stekelenburg

Actually Stekelenburg would be more suitable for us than De Gea, according to Sid Lowe De Gea's form has been erratic(which is quite normal for his age) but I'm not sure we really want it this time.

The reaction on here to Stekelenburg has been quite laughable tbh, he has been compared to PIG, Bosnich and Foster without even watching him more five times.

I personally prefer the Steks between the sticks. He is very tall...very agile and is extremely experience. 28 is a perfect goal keeping age. Yes Neuer was a beast in Germany but that weekend, Bayern put 4 past him and then on Wednesday, so did United's B team. Neuer is shorter than Steklenberg and De Gea is shorter than Neuer. De Gea is too young to be our no. 1 and I think it would be great to have Dane and a Dutchman be our number 1 and 2. Our 2 best keepers were a Dane and Dutchman. Apart from that, both keepers are very good. Very confident. I really hope we get Steklenberg and not De Gea. Really....really hope so.

On further thought...maybe we did get him because Edwin said we already had a replacement but he can't say who and he was pleased with the replacement based (purely based on what I've heard). Makes me think it could very well be his countryman.

Very well said, I fully agree with you.

lindegaard should get an honest shot in the pre-season. if shite like foster did, anders deserves a chance. who knows, he could be the dogs bollocks.

Pre-season, yes. A lot of our players get a shot pre-season, but can't have Anders as our #1 keeper yet. Such a big, big risk.

id rahter we give Kuszcz a chance. He's been here for 5 years and last season when called upon he did a good job.

i think that if had been given this spot at the begining of last season we would have won the title

Pointless.

A) We need to sign a new goalkeeper anyway. We can't wait until deep into pre season to decide who, and whether we need a number one or a number two.

B) Even if Lindegaard does really well, it will be saying nothing about his ability to handle pressure in matches that actually do count for something.

Maybe Lindegaard's injury this season has ruined his chance to make a couple more appearances and make us re-think things. Unlucky, but that's the way things go.

So the opposition's goal has been open in all those Ajax games you've watched this season?

Just because they are Dutch and are GK's does not mean they are going to play for Netherlands. I meant good, solid options like how Germany and Spain have.

Great post, I agree with you 100 percent. I too have been hoping Steklenberg will be the next United number 1. He is huge, just like VDS, and we could get 10 years of top quality Goalkeeping out of him. We have no time to nurture a goalkeeper we need someone ready made

Casillas Valdes Reina and Neuer , won't happen . Wiese is a joke , De Gea a baby .

What the hell are you talking about? I was not suggesting we should try and sign those options. I just meant the Dutch don't have many good options in the goalkeeping department like the Spanish and German national teams do.

This could go in any of the GK threads tbh, but I reckon this guy is our #1 target.

From Gill...

"We know the keeper we want and we're in a good situation with that. That will progress at the end of the season. We've made the decision and I'm sure we can get the deal done.
"Obviously there's been a lot of speculation and we've been associated with all the top goalkeepers over the past six to 12 months. But we've known who we've wanted for many months and we aim to achieve that."

How much is he going to cost? If he's under 10m, we should probably take him who is an experienced international at his prime age for a goalkeeper instead of 25m on De Gea

De Gea

Fergie has gone on record saying that he won't make the same mistakes as in the past regarding goalkeepers, i.e. he will go for the best possible goalkeeper who is available, regardless of cost.

I just can't help feeling that de Gea is not the one we have in mind - would Ferguson gamble on an inexperienced youngsters who has never had any real pressure in his life ?

Stekelenburg is more experienced and an international goalkeeper - he makes much more sense.

But a 20 year old ? I just can't see it

Barthez was the most experienced of all times...
De Gea is not inexperienced, won a Europa League, and European Supercup

I don't see us spending big money on a 28-29 yrs old.

If De Gea doesn't work, you can sell him maybe at same price, you can't do this with Stekelenburg.

I don't know, Stek is good, but with De Gea you could resolve the GK problem for 10-15 yrs, and Fergie likes working with "raw" material.

Videos of Barthez. How very random....

The bus drove under some tram lines. Stekelenburg had to duck to avoid them, dropping the trophy in the process.
