Van Gaal press conf - and he's not accepting that MUFC and LFC have 'fallen' playing in Europa League. "You live in the past,' he says - Daniel Taylor

LVG says MU are "happy" to be playing in the Europa League - Paul Hirst
Thats incredible. What was he brought here for? To complete the crumbling of the Empire? To fast track Man City promotion to the dominant team in Manchester. I'm sorry but Van Gaal is a Bich. He got no fight. He's stepping aside with a wimper

April 16th we play Villa... whatever happens between then and now, even if we win every single game until that point (we won't)... if we lose to Villa at home, that should be an automatic sacking on the spot... Literally, Ed Woodward should throw a P45 at him from the stand to his seat in the dugout.

Van Gaal "happy" to be in the Europa league and tells fans they "live in the past" if they aren't.

Ok, when is he going?!
It's sickening that this guy is still in charge. How many times has he tried to lecture the fans that he knows better? In a few weeks he'll be telling us 7th is an achievement.

Exactly. I'd understand if he'd taken over Moyes and been given no budget, but he's had almost £300m. If you gave that to Newcastle, they would be title challenging in 2 years. I haven't heard LvG say once yet in his reign that he will aim for the title. He seems to have just accepted he is out of touch and is waiting to be sacked to get his pay off

If there was any truth in that story and United had made the decision to stick with him no matter what, the club would have come out in support of him immediately after the decision was made. Not buying this BS.

Hes actually talking like a small time manager which was one of my biggest Moyes criticisms. Manchester United should be happy at playing Europa League, because our glory days are over and we are now small time. That what that sounds like to me. The champions League are for teams like Leicester and Tottenham who have barely a fraction of our revenue and transfer budget. If these quotes are true I'm raging. It would be like hes acting like he hasn't been given money to buy players like Di Maria for 59 mill or Martial for 57 mill( with add ons) and he is now scraping the barrel with a has been club. I.e. hes not accountable for his ineffective recruitment strategy. He used to manage Barcelona and Bayern Munich for pete's sake. Surely he would've been fired after saying that. Bayern sacked him for fear of missing out on the champions league. Jesus weeps

This latest round of 'Van Gaal is here for next season' stories are presumably an attempt to lessen the chances of an end of season slump with a lame duck manager in charge. At least I hope that's all it is...

Not sure what i am most afraid of, LvG one more year in charge of United, or Donald Trump in charge of USA.
Too close to call.

WW3 will be a pleasant distraction from another season under Van Gaal.

WW3 will be a pleasant distraction from another season under Van Gaal.

Maybe the PL will take a break during the war, and when it is over, his contract has expired aswell.
We can only hope!

I think LvG would walk out the moment he didn't have the support from the board. Since Mourinho will join in the summer, our board must support him at this stage.

He's massively small time mate. Think back to when Barcelona were having a bad moment just over 10 years ago. They were in the UEFA Cup, we all remember the Celtic games, but they would never have let their manager say wanting to be back with the elite was living in the past. Van Gaal's garbage is a disgrace to Man Utd. Klopp's Liverpool are doing worse than us, and he won't be telling the Scousers they are living in the past for wanting to be back with the best. I've moved from wanting Van Gaal gone to actively disliking him.

'Other teams are playing in the Champions League. You are talking about Manchester United and Liverpool, we are happy to play in the Europa League. But Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea are still playing in the Champions League. So six clubs are in Europe (also including Tottenham in the Europa League) and you have to be proud of that. But in football it is normal. It is not normal that one team dominates for 20 years in a row as the champion...It was another time, you live in the past. You have to live in the present I think.'

In fairness, we are a 6th place club - this sucks, but that's the reality.
Obviously, that is not where we should be. With the money available, top 3 should be realistic.

Normally, he'd have expected to be fired by now, so would not be giving press conferences.
The problem he faces is that he has done a bad job, he knows it, but he hasn't been fired. So, what can he say?

Personally, I think he already has agreed to leave at the end of the season, which is why he is merely treading water.
I think Mourinho already has a start date for his new job.

I can see what he's "trying" to say, but he really shouldn't have bothered, it was never going to come out well.

The fact that things will never be dominated in that way again are true, but we a small run of wins away from being in the top 4 again. Less cowardness would probably have us in that position already.

There is no shame in being in the Europa league, there are some big clubs playing in it. But to say we live in the past is completely the wrong thing to say.

“In football it is normal,” Van Gaal said, to the question of what it said about the status of the two clubs. “It is not normal that one team is dominating for 20 years in a row as champions. How many titles have Liverpool and how many titles Manchester United? It was another time. You live in the past. You live in the past and you have to live in the present.”

He was brought in to fix the mess Moyes was. He hasn't really done that. Now, to say we are living in the past, is refusing to accept any blame for where we are. It's not good enough. And I think our upsurge in form happened because he was forced to play a balanced side.

If he's going to be excused due to bad English, then we might as well have Giggs do the talking. But that would mean a 100% bland character dishing out cliches.

I want a new manager with his own coaching staff, no one imposed upon him.

The fecking cnut gets away with absolutely anything, on and off the pitch. Can't wait to see his stupid face out of the club.

Fair play if he was referring to titles won decades ago (as in Liverpool's case) but since when was a few years back ancient history?

It reads pretty bad on paper, regardless of the context or real intent behind the words.

Honestly won't be surprised if he stays after all this. He's seemingly bulletproof and can say anything.

Why not focus on the tie, it's a massive one whatever the competition plus the two clubs have never met before in Europe.

Considering City & Chelsea's massive spending has slowed down, and considering that we've increased our spending, LVG's remarks read like flimsy excuses for failure.

Americans are trully fecked. A choice between Trump, Sanders or Hillary is terrible. No matter which way you go, you will lose.

The same sanders who actually wants to tax the rich, never taken a cent from wall street, and his net worth 500K, and wants to give single health care and free college. Sounds like a pip dream, same sanders that stood up for transgender rights in the 80's, Americans not totally fecked with sanders. He is a rare breed in politics that we may not see in a long time. I would hedge my bets with sanders who is not in bed with wall street

Lowering expectations everywhere. We're officially back in the Moyes era.

Quite. And I'm not sure Van Gaal's latest mutterings are really in keeping with the "biggest/bestest club ever" narrative Woodward and co sell the sponsors, and upon which our revenues rely.

Fair play if he was referring to titles won decades ago (as in Liverpool's case) but since when was a few years back ancient history?

It's a terrible choice of words, at best.

Makes it sound as though we're not in danger of doing a Pool, but that we've already done it.

He probably doesn't realize how infuriating it is for United fans to hear him talk like that. Whether that's a valid excuse or not, I don't know. But I'm inclined to believe he doesn't actually mean it - not in the worse sense.

If it actually was brutal honesty, that would be fair enough. But it isn't. We're not where we should be by any stretch: It's the notion that we have no business being any better off which enrages people - and that's very understandable. Because we ain't dead yet - no need to be shopping for headstones.

“How many titles have Liverpool and how many titles Manchester United? It was another time. You live in the past. You live in the past and you have to live in the present.”

Wow, just wow. he deserves to be fired for this alone.

What a difference 3 years makes, but it does show how his mind thinks... I guess we should be happy with wins he has provided over Shrewsbury and the like - if he stays for another season we may be playing championship teams each week, and should be happy doing so!

Frankly, if he genuinely feels "that's the way it is now - get on with it" then why did he come here in the first place, if we were destined to be second-rate?

OR he knows he is basically untouchable so he is now past diplomacy and optics.

He didn't. He got in here on the back of a successful World Cup campaign, won all the pre-season fixtures and was thinking this would be a right laugh. He was sort of right.

I can see what he's "trying" to say, but he really shouldn't have bothered, it was never going to come out well.

Why?

Barcelona fell off around 2000 after a decade of dominance starting with Cruyff. Five years later they were back.

Juventus got relegated for match fixing, few years later they were back.

Why is it wrong for United fans, having won the title three years ago and spent £250million, to expect to be going back to the top?

He was originally given 3 years to win the title. To do so, rests on the assumption that it is possible. For that still to be realistic, with him in charge, there has to be a significant progression between seasons. I'd say he's changed the narrative.

to be honest i've read how much Sander's ideas would cost- no one can afford that.
It's not the place to discuss politics but Sanders is not my cup of tea. Just saying like.

Of course he has. From We will win the title to "you should be happy to be in Europa League"

:wenger:

I remember it being three years to win the CL. I remember the plan being winning the title in the second year.

This the fundamental issue right now.

The Glazers lack of football knowledge and their missguided faith in Fergie led to a decision that haunts the club to this very day. They saw fit to entrust David Moyes, despite his clear lack of managerial experience at the highest level, with the day to day running of one of the biggest clubs on the planet. Following a glowing endorsement by perhaps the greatest manager in the history of the game, how could the decision be incorrect? The infallible SAF simply cannot be wrong, afteral he did win them 10 something trophies since their takeover - plus countless others prior to their arrival - so it stands to reason that this is a man more than capable of choosing his own successor. In Fergie we trust. Naive and foolish Mr Glazer.

Of course in hindsight it was the worst decision in the clubs history and the Glazers, aware of their disasterous mistake in appointing David Moyes, went for the far safer option allowing LVG to secede him. Good appointment at the time, I applauded it myself and had full faith that he would eventually turn the club around and steer us in the right direction. Wrong again. We are at best in a stagnated position, it could be argued that we are even worse off in light of the money spent on transfers and the like. I wouldn't call the LVG appointment a mistake on the boards behalf, more a failure by a man who should have done far better with the near limitless resources he had at his disposal. LVG has no excuse and if harbors any form of self-respect he should resign with dignity before he is sacked. Don't hold your breath though.

The next appointment is anyones guess. I have little to no faith in the board right now, that includes two genuine icons of the club; SAF and Sir Bobby Charlton. Personally I would go for Jose, partly due to the lack of other options but also because he is, despite what his haters may think, in the mould of Fergie himself - a genuine winner at heart and a proper leader of men - something our club is crying out for at this point in time.

Very nicely put.

How much did City's spending slow down last year once the FFP ruling was lifted?

No idea what he's trying to say there, but I'm guessing he's trying to play down exceptions again, which is something he has been doing for a while now. Then we win a game or two and he talks about winning the league. Makes it up as he goes along.

It keeps changing and even some of our supporters appear to go along with it.

Just look at the thread asking what it would take to keep him on for a final season. Apparently for a healthy proportion on here finishing 4th would be a success, despite the initial expectation of a title challenge.

Yea like the wars that cost trillions, check a financial expert how much sanders policy's would cost, it actually is not that expensive. This idea it's impossible, when taxes in the first place are not even used to the Americans benifit, but on wars that are not even needed to be invaded. Imagine that, a government using taxes to pay for stuff people need
