The football is garbage and he needs to really accept that this isn't acceptable, but he seems to think we are playing well. That is hugely disappointing. But come on, whilst it's easy to knock him, some of the players have been shocking for a long time. Rooney (nothing more needs to be said), Mata can only seem to play well when certain moons align, Fellaini has had about 5 decent performances since he joined the club, Jones is a waste of a pay packet, Carrick is clearly well over the top of his decent playing time, Herrera is not showing any of the passing ability or vision he did a few years ago (I have hope here though). These players alone are pretty much in our starting 11 perhaps and are not good enough for this club. LvG can't polish a turd and I doubt even the messiah Mourinho could get Rooney to bang in a dozen goals this or any season the way he has declined. I'm not saying I want LvG to stay as I'd be pleased to see him gone, as it's clearly not working, but he is not totally to blame. The club has spent a lot of money on shite lately.

The thing is last nights game on it's own isn't all that bad, OK we were piss poor but we got the result which is all that matters in a knockout cup competition but I think it's the significance of the performance related to the entire season and parts of last season that is the deal breaker.

If we had been showing intent all season and at least had been using different tactics for different opponents as any normal manager would. However we've seen this all before and I think that we are extremely lucky to have got a result here against a poor Sheffield united side, alright they fought till the end but I can't even say I remember any great defending or even a notable save from the keeper. Lvg is able to hide behind the awful results of other teams as he mentioned in his press conference and this season he's got away with it somehow.

Let's not pretend, the only reason he's still around is because everyone else has been crap as well and he's been able to pass off our failings as the norm for this particular year, even today he mentioned other results.

Crap basically.

The game kicked off and there were a lot of empty seats. By 60 minutes the numbers leaving started to show by 75 minutes there was serious spaces and by the pen-goal wholesale deserted areas. The board can't bury their heads in the sand - there were a lot of unused tickets today and even more for the Europa game. This football is seriously testing fans patience and the long term absence of good quality entertainment is going to hurt the cash flow if not already.

The writing is on the wall. The fans in the ground are a litmus test for the feelings of those around the globe if you ask me. If they are not buying tickets/not turning up then change has to come and quickly.

I don't know why lvg is being blamed here for yesterday. If he had fielded kids we would have been out. So he put a good team. The players played real crap. Mata Herrera were sloppy and ineffective. He changed them. Though we won due to a penalty it was memphis movements which got it. I think lvg did a fair enough job there. Our team many a time play like headless chickens. I find it hard to believe that they were told to be like that

If an army doesn't perform, or a corporation's results slide into the dumps, whose ultimate responsibility is it? Don't dispute with you that some of the players are not good enough or have become shells of their former selves before they came to United (and they too need to go). But if the manager can't exact the proper performances out of the players he bought, picked and trained, what kind of job is he doing? If we were pounding Sheff Utd. with shots yesterday or playing fluid attacking football, you would not have still constant pressure from a vast number of people clamouring for his exit.

It's only a matter of time before ironic cheers become all out mutiny.

Heavily booed at half time and even some chants of "you're getting sacked in the morning" from the Stretford End. I only wish our board had the balls to sack him. Not only do we have an under-performing spine of a team, but we have a spineless board. Not a football man among them.

I think that's one of my biggest problems and it was the same as Moyes.

If LVG was willing to acknowledge that our football is shit, it would be easier to give him time to try and turn it around. If he said: "Look, I know we're not playing the way we're should but we shall try our hardest to fix that."

Instead, the feeling you get is that we're playing pretty much exactly how he wants us to. He seems to think it's all down to poor finishing.

Literally this every game

giphy.gif
oh my God, this actually happened yesterday with Schweinsteiger near edge of their box. Had the ball and just despaired in confusion

A few round me left at half time. First time I've ever seen that at OT.

To be fair, the club won't be that bothered because they ticket has been purchased and paid for, that's all they care about. Given it was Saturday evening and it was bloody cold, I think I would have considered walking if I still had my season ticket as well.

Having said that, I sat through the Bursaspor and Cluj games. The main difference being we used them games like training exercises, this current set up is how we're actually playing.

I absolutely love it when we counterattack now, somebody runs to the box and then stops (happened twice with Herrera and Rooney yesterday which was hilarious to watch) because he sees that player X, Y and Z are not in their position which is an error in philosophy matrix therefore we have to start, reboot and pass it backwards, wait for everybody to get back, get back to point 0.

One word. Paralyzed!!

I refuse to believe that the board, including Woodward and the owners, don't understand that something needs to be done. The optimist insides me says we negotiate with one or two candidates.

Look at the players. No joy. Underperforming. Paralyzed.

Look at the managers eyes. Empty. No joy. Paralyzed.

Look at Ryan Giggs. Optimism? Decisive? Anything? Maybe I'm biased but he looks like Moyes. Absolutely clueless and at the wrong place at the wrong time.

I have been working in management for over 20 years and the worst thing to do when the results are bad is doing nothing. Clean the floor from the top and find a new leader. Right now everybody are paralyzed.

A lot of the goals including the Leicester game last season, Aston Villa came to mind from players running into the box to get onto the ball. Why has he stopped them doing that?

Some LVG quotes from yesterday -

You have to play more quickly than we did in first half and you have to play with wingers. We didn’t do that in the first half.

We have to do it [create chances] better than this match of course. We have to move the ball quicker and then the gaps will come. You have to see it as a player and the pass has to be at the right speed.

Weird this is it doesn't matter the opposition level; premier league, champions league, 1st division it all looks the same

Some LVG quotes from yesterday -
He has said this over and over again but is not doing anything to rectifying it. Why didn't he start with Memphis and Lingard if he doesn't think Mata can play the wing. Why play with two holding midfielders. BFS and Herrera in that midfield would have sufficed. The two wingers would have given them an outlet. He is contributing to his own downfall.

What I'm finding most difficult is the feeling of helplessness. There is literally no signs of anything changing. We can see the mistakes been made in front of our eyes and we can't do a thing about it. He's not really even being linked to the sack in the media ever since the draw against Chelsea. Is there anything we can do here?

It definitely doesn't matter who we play. He will play the same way each game, which makes them predictable and easy to defend against. He will not change depending on the capabilities of the opposing team. He is bringing all the criticism on himself.

My line up prediction says how differently I see a home game against an average league one side to how LVG sees it, surely it was the right time to try something more positive.

Don't disagree with any of that. Just saying this idea some people have that he's actually happy with us playing shit football is greatly exaggerated.

I don't think he is happy, but harping on about whilst doing nothing is not helping his cause. It could have been fixed quite easily. I am now dreading the next two games. Could see Newcastle holding us and I will be following the Liverpool game from behind the settee ( Can see him going ultra defensive) then being happy with a 0-0 draw, when we actually won there last season. How is that progress?

LVG's perfect match:
  • A goal per chance created
  • Absolutely ZERO goal chance conceded
  • Total possession domination
Even a choreographed match wouldn't have such stats.

Absolutely spot on. It's so annoying when in the post match interview he justifies the shit performance and lack of goals by saying something like, "but we created 2 goalscoring chances, if we scored from them then we would have won." No shit, numbnuts. That's why you're meant to create 20 and not two.

He really is infuriating.

How can this be fixed easily? We've tried all possible combinations and still looked equally shit. Only fix I see is a fresh start with a new manager.

EDIT: See people above me actually believing he's happy with this shit despite quotes to the contrary.

He was saying he wanted wingers yesterday, but kept all three of the players who could play there out of the team. Then when he brought two on it looked better, although I think it had more to do with Sheffield United being knackered. The bemoans that Mata is not a winger. No shit Sherlock.

We're playing worse than under Moyes now and this is some achievement. The only difference is that we are not getting battered by teams yet like we did under Smug Dave (Liverpool, City and Everton) but this could also come because we are mostly clueless after going down and play with zero urgency.

Never felt so disinterested in watching United play. I stopped watching after 80 minutes yesterday and went to grab a dinner because they were closing in 1 hour and I'd rather miss that game than a good meal. I would have never stopped watching United game 10 minutes from time under Ferguson. The quality of our football is just so low and the style is pure frustration.

I am sure board are happy with him though. If it's true that he is good friends with Woodward privately then prepare to endure this for another 18 months. They are treating fans like idiots.

It looks the same because it is the same. The same players, the same system, the same tactics, the same attitudes, the same motivations, the same crab like tempo - the only difference is the opponent. Opponents know what we're going to do and all pretty much play the same defensive game. All opponents know we barely attack the six yard box, hover around the penalty area and pass sideways in midfield. We allow teams to defend quickly because we counter slowly. We have more wingers than necessary with up to 4 players on the flanks at any one time. Best form of defence is when the opponent is frustrated to the flanks, can't break through the middle, and doesn't get into the box. This is all basic stuff wrapped up in a pseudoscience of bullshit philosophy.

Last night was hailed as a necessary win. But the overall results reflect the style and performance of our football across last season and until now. Even with the marque players last season it was the same - Stoke, Swansea, Spurs, remember against Cambridge with all our top players looking like cart horses. The number of games that 'thrilled' over 2 seasons can be counted on one hand. The disasters against lower opposition until yesterday's last gasp win consistently poor. Fans leaving, forums screaming, podcast ranting and OT carries on blindly ignoring all criticism and protests - it's all becoming very familiar to how great clubs fall.

But we've looked more or less the same even when we do play Lindgard or Memphis. I'd actually argue we've looked worse with Memphis in recent games. I don't think changing the lineup will get us playing good football; it's more to do with the team as a whole.

The "Sheffield United didn't create any chances, but why is nobody criticising them? I think its unfair" bullshit is enough fuel for today.
LvG one Schweini: "Everyone thought it was his ankle, except for me, I knew it was his knee."

I fell off the fence yesterday.
This team is his now (plenty of ins and outs) and it is dire.
Some manager can even take over mid season and get teams playing. Teams with none of their own players in.
We play a system that can be nullified simply by our opponents, and even thought that happens all the time, we have no answer tto it.

For me, this was not our worst performance this year. That honour I leave to the PSV game. Considering the standard of opponent though, this was close and the last straw for me.

Let Giggs have til the end of the season, with Joyce as his number 2. It may not be the long term answer, but I'd expect it would be more entertaining.

P's
Does this answer the "eentertainment vs results" question ?
We did win while bringing the game into disrepute.

Yeah, a few started kicking off towards the end of the first half and said they're not coming back for the second half. Which they didn't.
That's a concern and if this football continues more will do the same (or not turn up at all) You just can't defend this style being played by United.
Do you go often and if so what's the mood around O.T like?

He's feeling the pressure. He cant say we're crap because people would be asking what had he done to sort that out

Yeah I've got a ST. It's a strange atmosphere, you can tell nobody wants to kick off. But I was saying yesterday that if they took the lead it would get ugly. The fans are showing as much discontent as possible without becoming a harmful presence at the games. If we start losing or there is no improvement then it will change and there'll be riots. The Liverpool game will be telling.
