Luke Shaw | Deal done! Almost...

Not sure why the price should be an issue to anyone really. He is an excellent young fullback with plenty of time to get even better and he (hopefully) nails down the LB position in our team for a decade or more. Just like Rio's transfer 25-30m will seem like a great bit of business in ten years time. Get him signed Woody!

Huh? We made an official bid for him, happens with all transfers. Nothing just pops up out of the blue when a player signs officially, bids always get reported when they happen.

Some reason I didn't think it came from us. Had a brainfart.

The value of this transfer can only be judged further down really. Saying "well that's LB sorted for the next whatever amount of years"(I actually wonder how many of these instances are there) is a bit silly as no one knows what could happen. He could flop, 5 years on he could want to go to Chelsea.

I don't think Moreno is completely unrealistic but if you're challenging with Madrid/Barca then you've got no chance  the others signings would be pointless really when they need a new CB and possibly RB/LB, when they've sorted out what they need to then they can go about signing Messi ;)
Yeah I think Moreno would prefer to stay in Spain. Exactly , they're touting these potential signings up as if they're having a squad overhaul like ourselves! I just don't understand how they think they can sign all those players :wenger:.

Wouldn't be surprised if they ended up with Coentrao at LB as he'll go for around £6-8m, then they'll probably go and sign Hangelaand from Fulham for CB and that'll be their summer spending over with.

Of course he could flop. There are no sure things. But if he wants to go to Chelsea in 5 years you'd imagine at the very least we'd get a good return on our investment. Same risk you run with every player.

I really hope we get this lad signed. He seems to have the right kind of mentality from what ive seen which to me means he wont flop. Shaw on one flank and coleman (if we have money left over from other signings) on the other would be fantastic.
If we have no money left over then i would like to think we would go for Sagna on a free. He is an excellent right back who could fill in for Rafael.

I don't think 27m is too bad of a price. Shaw has really proven himself at PL level this season, and he'll only get better with us and van Gaal.

So what? We should only sign Manchester united fans?

£27m and £100/wk for an 18 year old is a lot, mate. It's a huge gamble. However, the cost would be justified if he had a long career with us and helps us win trophies during that time.

I would have preferred a more experienced player. However, the chance to acquire one of the very few top English talents out there, in an off season where we'll possibly lose a few British players, makes me happy.

27m would be ok for me, that's what you pay for a top talent. 100k/w is a different thing but then again I doubt we'd pay him that much

I have a horrible feeling Chelsea will snap him up from under our noses.

With Ashley Cole approaching the twilight of his career, they don't seem to have too many options at LB either, and Abramovic has a habit of stealing other teams' transfer targets.

Ashley Cole isn't Chelsea first choice left back. Why spend £30m to replace someone on the bench?

I'm amazed that some of you are content to whinge about a lack of quality signings and then in the next instant say "too much to spend for so and so". You can't have it both ways, if you only want to spend 8-10m you might as well start scouting the homeless tournaments again; there must be another Bebe out there somewhere.

Those saying fullbacks don't "normally" cost that much.
I ask, if we don't get Shaw, what alternatives of the same calibre are there?

Get your overall point but we are paying a massive English premium here. Moreno and Rodriguez both look as capable as Shaw if you were looking at alternatives IMO

Azpilicueta is a RB, he's played out of position all season so Mourinho will surely look to bring in a natural LB and move him to his preferred position. They've been linked with LB's including Shaw all season.

I don't remember us selling any player to Chelsea or any other team in England against our wishes. When we do sell, it is almost always on our terms. Also, I doubt he would want to suddenly go to Chelsea if we are competing again and he is earning well. This fan thing among the players does not cut it with me, else Ramsey would have tried to angle a move to us by now.

Free transfer...

Shaw seems a bit gormless, he always looks like he's trying to remember his name.

Tell him that he's getting paid in pickled onion Monster Munch and he'd probably jump around in joy.

Of course there's an English premium, thats a given.

But even then, those type of players you would have less confidence in them staying at the club for 10+ years.
They're more likely to stay for 3/4 years then angle for a move back to Spain/Germany.

You could say that about any player you sign, even Shaw as some have pointed out he is a Chelsea fan and may itch for a move there in 5 years time on a free.

You can't be scared to sign players just because they may angle for a move to Spain/Germany (I'm sorry Ronaldo put the fear of God into you in that respect). I mean if you had that attitude you wouldn't have signed Vidic/Evra (both here for about 8 years), you wouldn't have signed De Gea (here for3 years and not angling for a route back home). You have to trust that Manchester United is a big club in its own right and that majority of players do stay for a long time on their own volition.

Southampton are going to (quite rightly) play this. A bidding war is their ideal situation.

I think we will get this sorted pretty quickly. All the major sources are saying only personal terms need to be agreed upon.

One major source from what I've seen...and that's the daily mirror.

They certainly won't be receiving bids much higher than £27m.

Waiting would be an exercise in futility.

If he chooses Pickled Onion over Flamin' Hot and Roast Beef Monster Munch, then I seriously doubt his credentials as a Manchester United player.

price/salary means sod all to me, its not my money, just get it done

My only concern with the salary is whether it will effect the likes of Januzaj, who is perhaps potentially better and a youth product. He is most definitely on less than what is being quoted as being offered Shaw.

I think Telegraph also reported the same and BBC also went with us going with a 27 million offer.
On it only waiting for personal terms? My bad if so.

Yeah that's what I remember reading that only personal terms need to be agreed. But I could be mistaking my tabloids :p

Oh this is the Nani-Young wage myth all over again.

We'll look after Januzaj you don't have to worry about that. Just look at how we treated Ronaldo and Rooney as they rose in stature. We're a club that has always rewarded players with better contracts as they develop.
