OK this is how I see this..

ON the plus side:

Young,dynamic,potential star,english (could stay for 10-15 years),great player..

ON the negative:

30m-35 is his final value, we won´t get more if we sell him later on (Alves left for 23m, 7m being add-ons being one of the best LB in the world)..
Pressure moving to United on a high signing fee could break him.
Needs to play all the games to develop which could become a problem at United.

I wan´t to sign this guy but this is getting to the crazy side of football..

Firstly - the money won't be paid upfront. More than likely, as with the vast majority of transfers certain sums are likely to be performance related. If the full sum had been paid then that's a positive because he's performed.

In terms of the future - even at £35 million - which I suspect is high anyway, he could be the first choice for 12 plus years. Split the figure over that period it looks decent business - Rio Ferdinand being the best example of that.

In terms of return there's no reason you wouldn't expect a profit. Fees go up every year and if clubs want him then they pay, or he stays. As it is, being English he may be quite happy to stay where he is.

Fact is, this is what young, quality players cost. Either you buy into it, or you don't and shop at the lower end of the market and net the best go elsewhere. The latter usually means you end up with a less talented team, and are usually less successful.

Thing is, Luke Shaw is not even amongst the best to warrant that 40 million. That's even more than the amount Chelsea paid for Hazard or Fabregas.

You can get someone who is already better and ahead in the game, like Ricardo Rodriguez for less than half that 40 million.

I really hope we look elsewhere if the 30million + figures are true. All said and done, he's still an 18 year old who has had one good season. He might go on to be our mainstay for a decade but he could just as well end up with second season syndrome and ended up as a very expensive mistake.

It is not like he will be able to get more expensive if we wait for a while with him and see if he does continue his development. Even if he had reached his talent to the max, we'd pay 40 at the very max and even that would be overpriced.

Everything is pointing towards this happening or that we've got another top left back target who the media don't have a clue about really close to signing. I can't see us going into next season with Evra being our only left back.

This will be finalised in the next week or so I reckon. Herrera and Shaw will be confirmed before July I reckon.

He was impressive last season as well.

I thought Shaw was excellent today, one of a number of bright sparks in another could-have-been sort of performance. I know a lot of people think we should look elsewhere because his price is so high, but for me he has that special ingredient that the cheaper alternatives just don't, and he's worth the price. Absurdly reliable in defence for an 18-year-old, and he has that robustness in attack that all the best full-backs do when they go forward.

That tackle near the end, one on one, was very impressive.

Totally agree, most impressive quality that he has for me is his level of maturity as proved with that tackle towards the end of the game. Even a more experienced defender would of been tempted to make a rash challenge yet Shaw was intelligent enough to close the player off and make a firm block instead, he'll only improve playing on a bigger stage so bite the bullet and get him signed.

Solid tackling at times but his pace is just incredible. England have quite a talent right there.

LVG doesn't care about price so hopefully there will be no problems with acquiring this guy in upcoming weeks.

I didn't realise he was that fast! To get back to the byline and tackle that bloke at the end showed the lads got the quality.

I'd say he's worth every penny of £30m

It looks like we have finally accepted that we can't always be stubborn and get the deal that suits us best. Sometimes you just have to splash out if you want somebody bad enough.

If in the next couple of weeks we announce Shaw and Herrera, we suddenly already look stronger.

Where has £40 million come from - other than some random tabloid press suggesting that "Koeman has upped the asking price" - even though the deal had probably been agreed in principle for ages.

He's a class act, and could be a top, first choice player for 12 - 15 years. As above, Rio Ferdinand was older, cost about the same and was money very well spent.

You might think its a problem that the club looks like getting arguably the best young left back in the world - I don't. Id sooner see him here rather than Chelsea or City.

If he's the right player at £25 million, he's the right player at £30 million and the extra pales into insignificance over the time he might spend here, or if not, the money that would likely come in fit him if he left to go abroad.

Anyway - the club can afford it. They wont pay over the odds for one player leaving them short of money elsewhere.

some wag said it, but the only plus point of the early knock out, is getting this one sorted earlier.

I get that Southampton want to keep their best players etc but having a player who wants to leave for another club and being prevented by doing so because of stupid sums of money, this could end badly for Southampton.

Can't say I am disapointing if true. There should be a red line for everything and we should not cross it. 27m is already way overpriced (his true value is probably on the region of 15m, while if he came from an another league and wasn't English likely wouldn't cost more than 10m) and if they don't accept it, then let them keep it. Let's see if other clubs will come near that offer.

I am starting to think the number are just made up.. £40M, like really... that's more that Vidal costs.. Either the deal was done in principle before World Cup, or we are waiting for Shaw to hand in transfer request... Also, I think £30M would be top anyone should pay, and even then I think a good chunk of it should be based on club and international appearances.. I don't mind Southampton getting £40M in the end, in like 5 years time, few million for every 20 appearances and stuff like that, maybe £10 if he gets to 50 England caps, so in the ned it goes to £40, but that much straight out of the blue.. no way...

Herrera + Shaw would certainly not be bad start. Still expecting us to sign a more defensive minded midfielder along with a centre back and perhaps a tricky winger.

Who has mentioned £40m? He won't go for anywhere near £40m.

As an aside, Vidal would cost more than £40m.

I get the feeling southampton are trying to start up a bidding war.
How so? No-one except us are interested on him.

Chelsea are signing Atletico's left back, Arsenal have a good left back, Liverpool are going for Sevilla's left back. So it is only us and if City decides but I doubt it considering that Clichy is decent and then the FFP.

Lots of potential to be a top player but £40 million is just ridiculous I'd rather us go for Daley Blind if the fee suggested for Shaw is true.

Soon as he gets off the plane get it done. Remember he has said he wants to move to us.
