Luke Shaw | Deal done! Almost...

This is the mirror - why are people talking like there's any truth to it? Or just another opportunity to complain?

If they suck balls that much (The Mirror), then perhaps it is time people drop that shit.

Seriously, the Saints can feck off if they hope anyone will dare paying that much for a guy who played zero competitive international matches for England. Even with Ronald Koeman as their manager and even his relationship with LVG, Southampton should never get anything higher than £27M.

I think United should let the papers know we're looking elsewhere as well.

I'd rather see it done now, whatever the cost. Imagine we refuse to budge on the £27m figure only to see Liverpool sell Suarez after the World Cup and wipe the smiles off our faces by taking Shaw.

£34m is way too much money. Southampton are taking the piss and it doesn't look as if he's pushing for a move either. I always prefer English players (if they're good of course) but this is getting ridiculous.

If the Herrera deal goes through, surely we're not going to spunk basically the same amount of cash, if not more on Shaw?

£34m is only a waste of money if it stops us investing elsewhere. If we spend £34m on a left back and then say that's all we can spend on transfers this year then yes, be outraged. If we spend the same again on a couple of midfielders then there's no problem.

It's an awfully large weight to rest on an 18 year old's shoulders though. Look at Fellaini and Andy Carroll - the pressure which comes with big money moves can harm your development.

Especially if there's nothing to develop.

£34m

We can get ANY left back in the world for that price (except maybe Alaba), most teams will probably force their left backs out of the club if we bid this much on them. Then why are we insistent on spending it on an unproven left back who still has it all to prove.

This is one reason I don't like us signing players from the PL, it's always ridiculously overpriced, especially if they are English. I actually don't believe that dailymail article anyway, but as I said before, 27m was already silly money - I know he's 18 and can play for United for a million years but if i was negotiating this deal, I'll walk away if Saints refused a bid of 27m. Not even Chelsea is ready to match that bid, and that's how you know it is a very ridiculous fee in itself. I really won't be fussed whether we sign Shaw or not, there are many left backs around his age who are better and have as much potential to improve. I don't know why we're letting ourselves be dragged into a saga for an unproven 18 yr old left back, he's not even an attacker like Barkley etc. Good riddance.

Even alaba if he wants to move. The only fullback ever bought close to that fee is alves, who frankly was in a different class, or thuram if you wanna class him as a fullback.

Its stupid paying that much for him when there are cheaper alternatives available.

I really hope we tell Southampton accept or reject this week. And move on.

£34m and the rumoured wages are ridiculous. The likes of Januzaj and future prospects will see those wages and demand the same or more. So I really hope those wages aren't true.

Can't be £34 million up front, surely?

I'd be amazed if it was. There'd be a load of conditional payments involved. If Shaw is enough of a success to activate them then we really won't care too much....

Alves cost less so madness if we pay that much for an unproven teenager. I'm all for splashing the case, but this sort of transfer has a knock on effect on other transfers and contract negotiations.

We not signing a proven world class player, who we can overpay for. We should just piss off Liverpool and go for Moreno or Rodriguez.

That fee is fecking outrageous. Do not want.

Have no idea why we are not in for him, is better than shaw and will be cheaper as well.

Barkley's an attacking midfielder, we have plenty of those already...

Think what he means if I am not mistaken that transfer fees for attackers tend to be higher than defenders. And it is the sort of fee that Barkley should go for.

That is what I think he means.

Ah right, I think its true that 34m is just madness for an 18 year old full back. If its true that Chelsea won't pay it, why the hell should we. Southampton have the right to play hardball with us, but jesus, he isn't Jordi Alba.

We really should call their bluff on this one. Shaw probably left for the world cup thinking he'll be a Manchester United player when he returned. He'll be properly pi**ed off at Southampton if they deny him his big move specially as the Chelsea LB spot is also seemingly gone.

I don't believe the Mirror story one bit. Southampton would be absolutely mental to hold up for 40m for a guy who is 18 years old and is unproven. Also, if they somehow screw this up then the lad is not going to be very happy and motivated for the current season.

And because we are Man Utd as you rightly put it, coupled with the fact everyone knows we have money to spend and we need to strengthen the squad without CL football, what's to stop Wolfsburg raping us for money as well?

And was he? Yes he was man of the match vs Spain but the other two games I thought he was poor.

Why other clubs aren't overpaying for their players? We have money but that doesn't mean that we'll pay way over the value of the players.

David Luis to PSG for 50m anyone ?

I really hope we tell Southhampton to keep Shaw if they even want 1 cent more than the already ridiculous 27 mil.

Big difference between £34 million regardless and £34 million depending on clauses (like us winning the league etc)

£34m is ridiculous and will put a lot of pressure on him to perform off the bat.

I'd offer £25m take it or leave it, and if not move onto Rodriguez.

Obviously it's the Mirror so it might be cobblers but if it is true and Southampton have asked for £40m then we have to end our interest.

£27m is too much really but £40m is obscene, Shaw is very good and will probably go on to be a great defender but he isn't worth that much money.

Completely agree, Rodriguez is an excellent player and would be much cheaper, 25m is over priced but it is what you have to pay for young English talent. Shaw is a very good player but we would be better off having a bigger budget for a big name signing or two like hummels, reus, Sanchez, Vidal etc.

I reckon this will be announced tomorrow since England play their last game today

I just can't see that kind of deal being given the green light from the top, especially with the rumoured wages as well. With Evra signed for another year we can still afford to play hardball for much of the summer though.

Not saying it is but Southhampton can go and F*** Themselves if they are trying to hold us to 34m for an 18 year, I really want him but there heads up there ass and reading way too much british newspapers if they think they can stuff us like that, much better cheaper options around europe for half that price.

I agree. If this is true, than Southampton are playing very risky game. I don’t think anybody else is interested at the moment, they just lost their manager and it’s highly unlikely that they will repeat this success next season.

I still think this deal has already been agreed long time ago, I can’t explain why.

I'd love to sign Shaw but Southampton are taking the absolute piss.

am i the only who thinks that

1) hes not that good atm
2) defo not worth 30-40 mil

Im hoping we are getting another Rio type of a deal but feck me - 40 mil thats a lot for a 19 y/o
I agree about the second one. About the first point I think that he is good and only Azpilicueta had a better season on EPL, but his attacking side of the game should improve in order for him to make a big impact in a top team. Defensivily he is very good despite being 18.

This would be crazy money , if true . Having said that though , football is full of crazy money and the more desperate a club the more the fees get inflated .
Not so long ago i thought 50 million for carroll was mental ( still is to be fair )
In my opinion 80 million for Bale was mental. 50 million for luiz ( a defender who always has a cock up lurking in him ).
Clubs can see united need to re build at the moment and sniff blood ( or cash ) and the bottom line is united need to lift themselves back into the champions league. They will pay a premium to do that and southampton are in the driving seat on this one. From what i read the lad has a four year contract and other clubs ( certainly Liverpool ) have been sniffing so they can afford to sit tight and wait. If United are seen to be 'tight' it could send a message out that they are not in the market for the top players. Sooner , rather than later united will have to bite the bullet and spend big , to show real intent , otherwise they may find talent going elsewhere to play , or even worse only being able to attract mercenary players after a huge salary and signing on fee .

Not surprising. We've spent months talking about how we have all this money to spend, so it's hardly surprising that clubs are upping their prices as a result.

The BBC:

As yet there has been no fresh bid for Southampton defender Luke Shaw, who was the subject of a big-money offer from United prior to England's dismal World Cup campaign.

And James Ducker in the Times:

United remain confident of signing Luke Shaw from Southampton and have not submitted a new bid of £34 million for the England left back.

The Mirror making it up.
