Luke Shaw | Deal done! Almost...

Alberto Moreno who's also very young and is a full Spanish international can be had for £16m.

Ricardo Rodriguez who had an excellent World Cup and is only 21 I believe is valued at £18m.

Azpilicueta was arguably the best LB in the league last season and now starts for Spain cost £7m.

Filipe Luis was the best all around LB in Europe last season and is going for £18m

Luke Shaw who has no European or international tournament experience and has only performed "well" for a small club will cost north of £30m. All because he's English.

Absolute mental. If we go ahead and pay that fee then we can really kiss goodbye most transfer targets. Just think, Chelsea signed Fabregas for under 30 mil a few weeks ago. We could get any left back in the world, and more for that kind of fee. No other club in the world would pay something daft like that for him, no matter how high rated he is. Young unproven left back's in other league's would go for a few million quid, but since Luke Shaw is English, he's worth a bloody fortune. I'd rather we stick with Evra for another season.

If Southampton are really going to reject £27m for a teenager when nobody else seems close to interested to that extent, then I'd support us withdrawing from the deal. There has to be a limit.

I doubt the media know anything though - except what they've been briefed to say by the interested parties at Southampton.

Lunacy. We've £30 million to spend on a left back but not on our midfield? Stinks of desperation.
Why do you think think that? If we end up paying that amount for Shaw it's because we can afford it. It's not Shaw or a cm.

Smacks of new guy bowling in, tried to play cocky bollocks. We should call his bluff, chase an alternative hard in the media and see how long they hold out.

This is the mirror - why are people talking like there's any truth to it? Or just another opportunity to complain?

That's transfer dead in a water i think. We should move on, maybe look for a more of a cover, more versatile player that could fill in LB spot. We can return for Shaw next year, if we are in CL he would probably cost no more that 23-25M.

The main thing in all of this is LVG wants him. I'd be very uncomfortable with the idea that Woodward is following up on Moyes' targets.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Van Gaal has never seen Shaw play. He strikes me as a man that focuses on his own job and wouldn't be watching Southampton matches. £34m is pretty ludicrous when you consider what he's done in his short career, if there's any truth in the £150,000 a week wage offer then that's insane too. I realise we'll have to pay a "non Champions League" premium but Shaw should just be happy to be at United, he's never even played in Europe.

Or sign Rodriguez who currently is much better and probably has also a higher ceiling. Likely for around 20m we can sing him.

Or sign Blind who while doesn't have world class potential seems to be a very good player and extremely versatile. I doubt he would cost more than 10m.

There are plenty of options and if Soton wants half of Old Trafford for Shaw we should back off and let them have him. I doubt any other club would come close to paying 30m for him. Unless he does a Bale (including changing the position to a more attacking one), but I think that is unlikely.

How do you work that out?

If we had a budget off £60m then I'd understand why people are getting touchy about it but considering it's common knowledge we need a cb, cm and a lb surely it shows we have a large budget if we are going to splash this amount?

Maybe it' because £34m on a left back would mean we can't scream the old "we've no money!!" mantra for at least four days after

And then the national team complain that the league has too many foreigners and our youngsters don't get time to develop. Well maybe if clubs like Southampton didnt go round ripping off the bigger clubs for potential talent these youngsters could improve. Abit hypocritical but let's be honest Shaw had more chance of developing into a class left back at United rather than spending extra years at Southampton.

Rodriquez is at a very wealthy club, coupled with his very good world cup and fact Wolfsburg have European football next season, why do people on here think he is only going to cost £20m?

Also regarding Blind, he was average tonight and against Australia.. he'd be a last resort surely?

It might not be. But it may well mean a budget midfielder (which doesn't necessarily mean a bad midfielder.)
I'm definitely more inclined to see us signing Shaw for huge money as an indication that we wont spend that much more, rather than as an indication that we're ready to spend big on whoever else we need.

He will have a year less of his contract and if Saints won't make CL he will be much more desperate to leave.

I don't think Southampton not making the CL is going to swing the price tag very much to be honest. I'd be surprised if there was expectation for it to be on the horizon.

You're getting ridiculous now. We have almost identical opinions when it comes to the Glazers and the money they spent but this has nothing to do with it.

Simply 27m for him was ridiculous, 34m is retarded. It doesn't matter if we have 50m or 200m for transfers, you should not pay 50% more than the real value. Every clubs will ask for Man United premium if we do so. The 150k mentioned wages are even more ridiculous, he would become oen of the top 10-15 best paid players in the league if that happens. Which isn't healthy in any aspect. Even if he has a career as good as Ashley Cole and still would be a bit too much. What if he does never fullfills the potential? Or if he does a Rafael and starts getting injured? Or if he isn't that great?

It is a way too risk and personally I would be more happy if we go for a cheaper option - like Rodriguez, who is also way better.

I wouldn't be surprised if Southampton asked for huge money. They're dealing with a man and a club that paid £28M for Marouane Fellaini. If I were their money man, I'd chance my luck.

He will have a year less of his contract and if Saints won't make CL he will be much more desperate to leave.

By which time Chelsea might become interested, also other European giants want him.. he ends up elsewhere and people on here will moan for years to come for not spending the money.

Because he is still at Wolfsburg and we are Man United, a club infnitely bigger than him. Because we can also doube the wages regardless that Wolfsburg is wealthy. And because we can win something on the future, something that Wolfsburg can't. And because it was reported on media that Wolfsburg will sell him for 25m EUR, which anyway would make it one of the most expensive transfers that have ever happened on that league.

Blind was good on both those games (today on a different position) and excellent against Spain.

Nobody thinks "we've no money!!", just that the owners don't actually want to spend much of it, or even as much as may be needed.
Completely different things really.

"New United boss Louis van Gaal is determined to land the Shaw, however, and wants executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to complete a deal as soon as the player returns from Brazil"

We may as well close the thread.

He will have a year less of his contract and if Saints won't make CL he will be much more desperate to leave.

He's still young, could have another excellent season for them. Southampton appear to be financially sound (demanding huge money for Lallana and Shaw) and if this continues then I'd expect them to keep the asking price high. It may come down to a Shaw forcing a move in the end.

Our mistake is waving our wad in people's faces.

"We've a war chest" to pointlessly appease fans just lets every other twat know we're loaded. Massive handicap in any negotiation.

If we had a budget off £60m then I'd understand why people are getting touchy about it but considering it's common knowledge we need a cb, cm and a lb surely it shows we have a large budget if we are going to splash this amount?

Not really. Fellaini cost a similar amount last summer. And as far as I'm concerned the owners weren't too interested in spending much more.
It's just as likely that a £30-odd million Shaw would be most of our budget gone as it is that he'd signal the start of a spending spree.

And because we are Man Utd as you rightly put it, coupled with the fact everyone knows we have money to spend and we need to strengthen the squad without CL football, what's to stop Wolfsburg raping us for money as well?

And was he? Yes he was man of the match vs Spain but the other two games I thought he was poor.

It might not be. But it may well mean a budget midfielder (which doesn't necessarily mean a bad midfielder.)

My thinking is the opposite. If we are willing to pay this much for a LB I really do think thats because we have a big chunk available, and it wont affect the investment required elsewhere.

We'll have to wait and see. I really do hope you're correct.

Quite frankly we're lunatics if we pay 34 or 40 million for him. Would be incredibly stupid. I don't care how good he is or will be, you don't pay that kind of money for a left-back.

It's nothing to do with club's ambition. right now Shaw has only 1?5 prem seasons under his belt, he is very young, so i think he can be persuaded to stay for one more year, esp given that MU is not in CL, you cold see why Shaw might take a rain check. But next year he will be much more desperate to move to a CL club. And could well force the move full-on.
By which time Chelsea might become interested, also other European giants want him.. he ends up elsewhere and people on here will moan for years to come for not spending the money.
Don't think so, no other giant would pay him he wages we are capable of, 100K for young full back?
Chelsea are forced to buy a new LB this summer. And it already looks they will buy Felipe Luiz.

Thing is, Luke Shaw would be taking a massive step up from Southampton to us. Throwing massive wages at world class midfielders or attacking players is only half the battle. You have to also convince them to leave top clubs who are in the CL and ALSO convince them to choose us over the other big clubs who can offer similar money, better teams, and CL football.

And because we are Man Utd as you rightly put it, coupled with the fact everyone knows we have money to spend and we need to strengthen the squad without CL football, what's to stop Wolfsburg raping us for money as well?

Why other clubs aren't overpaying for their players? We have money but that doesn't mean that we'll pay way over the value of the players.

I'd block Saints FC from my Skype friendlist if they want £40m for him. There's no full back in the world worth that amount of money, let alone yet alone a teenager who's had 0 international caps, has played less than two full seasons on a top level and wants sex from sisters.
