He is alright defensively in general if you look past some heavy mistakes he makes at times. Offensively though he is miles off the pace compared to the best. The best LBs are good defensively but immense offensively nowadays, and they are still good defensively while attacking. Shaw is good defensively most of the time, but his attacking is bang average. It will never be good enough for a top side or top player, he just hasnt got it in him. His positioning, crossing, decision making, technique is just random and inconsistent. It is what it is and i am a fan of buying a modern and offensive LB, that can offer us far more offensively and similar what Shaw offers defensively in a hopefully better system/team. He needs a massive kick up his arse, because his lack of workrate and lapses of concentration and creeping up again

He is ok. If the team has higher ambitions, we will need an upgrade. However we cant replace everyone and bigger fish to fry. So he stays.

Why do our managers never try to change players positions? As some of you have said Shaw cannot do the up and down up the pitch for 90 mins. It is not in his body. He is very quick and can pass well and maybe a midfield holding position may be the best for him.
That said where was our entire forward line and our midfield when the Huddersfield keeper caught the ball at the edge of his 6 yard box and sprinted with the ball to the edge of his box and punted it up field? Why didn't anyone of them at least try to block their keeper? Surely there are things that manager's does not have to teach players at this level?

Shaw would be crap as a holding midfielder ffs.

This. Started Ole's reign well. But has dropped back to lazy shaw in the last few games.

It is a sad state of affairs when he can even be considered for awards, let alone win one.

How much does Luke Shaw earn per week. I read many sites name 170k a week but I find it difficult. one journo wrote that he is on 90k a week and I find this number more logical.

He has been left out of the Nations League finals squad by Southgate. If that isn’t the kick up the backside he needs, I don’t know what is.

He isn't that great, being defensively sound is no longer good enough to meet the modern requirements of a full back. Teams now often have full backs who are on par, if not better attacking wise than their own wingers! I think we need to start searching for an upgrade on him, but RB is a much bigger concern

It’s been obvious for a while that Southgate doesn’t really rate Shaw. Shitty luck getting concussed straight after his excellent assist but he would have been back in the team ages ago, if Southgate didn’t see other players as better options. His form over the last 2 or 3 months vindicates the decision, unfortunately.

I think he did, especially this last international break, I think he pulled out and then played for us on the first match back.

Yeah, think he withdrew from the last one and whilst playing 90 minutes for United in the game straight before the break and straight after.
Yeah, that rings a bell alright. The line about giving "everything for the shirt" suggests it's a commitment issue as much as anything.

I wouldn't pick him either. Might make him think a bit rather than revelling in the glory of possibly the least glorious poty award in recent memory.

I’m Scottish so doesn’t bother me but I remember watching or reading something about Southgate saying Rose is his guy and he’ll keep faith in him even when earlier in the year he was pretty poor. Something to do with him always being in contact and going to St George’s or something for rehab.

Rose last few months does seem to have really picked up from where he was so could see why he’d be included.

I don't see why anyone should be surprised he didn't make the England squad, despite winning our POTY (by default and even then he shouldn't have) he hasn't actually been that great.

Plus United have had a terrible defensive record this season, no surprises here.

Yep. If we're honest, Rose and Chilwell are just better players.

Expect Chilwell to be at City next season.

I think he needs to be pushed by a captain type center back or someone from the coaching staff to reach a higher level. I think he is just fine talentwise. If Ferdinand and Vidic had been center backs he would have improved more than with Lindeloef and Smalling for sure. Which begs the question: Is it worth to splash out the cash on a leader type center back good on the ball? It probably is. Harry Maguire maybe?, Tuanzebe already is a gamble but maybe a good one. A foreign center back having to learn the language is also a gamble.

Lingard did as well - yet he is in.
Lingard certainly does not deserve to be included before the likes of Maddison for example, or Butland instead of our own Henderson, even Dier who has been injured if I am not mistaken should not be in the squad.

We don't know what goes on within the camp but its safe to assume that something Shaw has done hasn't impressed. Lets face it, Southgate isn't the first manager to accuse Shaw of being flaky.

Yes, I think you are on to something there. Southgate has 2 good options so I guess he can afford to discard Shaw if there is limited trust.

Southgate doesn't pick him? Chilwell, Rose have been better he says? Come on Rose ok , but Chilwell? It's a big kick up his ass if he needed one to get in England squad.

Come the useless friendlies he will pick him. I think he should be in there squad ? Delph is in bloody he'll doesn't even play for his club, know it's a different position but come on ?

Agree re Maddison - very unfortunate. Perhaps you could even put an argument in for Foden as well as even Fabian Delph has somehow made the cut. I wonder if is it based on rewarding past loyalty and performances.

Back to Shaw ... I remember when Rose was recovering from depression he spent some time talking to Southgate so perhaps just a bond has developed. Managers will say they don't have favourites but sometimes looking in from the outside some players do seem to get a little more leeway.

I guess the onus is on Shaw to come back stronger and if we benefit from that then all well and good.

So basically the majority of our back 4 have been dropped by England

apparently he's not very good

Been saying this for a while. But he got a terrible injury and all that bla bla bla.. He isnt in shape and hasnt been for a while. That in it self should be enough to give him hell. POTY oh please.

That’s all a bit meh. Kind of fascinating that he has more touches on the ball than any other LB. It’s really noticeable how much of our football goes through him. Not sure why? Maybe because so much of our football goes through Pogba, who plays on the same side?

Whatever, it makes us very lop-sided and predictable. Which might, in turn, explain why Shaw creates so little. The opposition know all our football comes down our left, so only need to concentrate on shutting that one side of the pitch down.
