Very good in defence. Like always. In attack as usual. I refuse to believe that he can't do more in attack.

Well, people at one point refused to believe that the Earth was round. Empirical studies will tell you that the Earth is in fact round(ish), and likewise Luke Shaw cannot attack. I think there is one on Lukaku's first touch as well, but I will have to study the Scripture for that one.

Brilliant performance today. He really is rather good defensively. Thus, we need an attacking right back! Anyone else thinking he would be pretty good on the left side in a three at the back?

In terms of new player acquisition in the summer Luke Shaw is the least of our concerns imo.

Give the lad a chance and a decent run after a horrific injury and I'm convinced he'll work out just fine.

Where are the usual doubters??
Still find him not good enough closing down crosses and he really isnt good going forward.

Tonight he was defensively really up for it, but he needs to have competition for the spot.

Theres definitely the possibility he'd be a good CB, even in a 2. But he's also good doing what he does now as a LB who defends well.

Just look on the opposite side at Marcos Alonso who has been a great buy for Chelsea and gets forward well for them, but look how he defends against Ander's goal for example. Shaw would have sorted that out

Agreed. You win some, you lose some.

Playing a young defender to improve? Who would have thought anyway?

IMO, he has shown he could be a very good player for us with LVG.

The injury set him back and of course Jose happened who you should never put around any young players to improve.

Solid as always, Great tackle on the one he clashed with Romero I just really wish Pogba would pick out these inside runs he makes. There was another brilliant one today but Pogba ignored it when it was a simple lay off and Shaw has beaten that back line.

I think his attacking could still improve to a point where it wouldn’t hold him back as a player like it is a bit right now. I think with additional coaching in a set system he could learn to be more helpful. Like learning some set attacking patterns to identify and react to. He’ll never be a natural obviously but I think a lot of the problem is that he’s had a defend first mentality drilled into him so hard that it’s going to take a while to play more positively.

Have said it for a long time - his future should be central. Wonderful defender and very cultured footballer; him and Lindelof playing it out from the back would add another dimension.

I like him but I do think we could upgrade on him. He has the odd good game going forward but often he's just tidy at best.

Can't understand so help me, please! 3 CB and no WB/FB? Or Martial and Lingard to play as WB? :wenger:

Brilliant tackle ahead of Pedro(?) where he clattered into Romero. There was one moment where Hazard burst in behind and Shaw accelerated, matched him stride for stride and forced him into a skied shot from a tight angle. Commentators were all on about how he hadn't lost his pace after his injury, it was great to see.

People forget its players like Shaw that win you titles. He doesn’t stand out and at times you panic that he won’t be good enough when it really matters, when in reality he has as much chance of going on to cement his position at United for many years. We won the league and champions league double with Wes Brown featuring the whole season, i think we can safely say Shaw has what it takes to be a long term success at the club.

Thought he was brilliant today defensively. If he could work on his delivery from wide then that would be decent.

He's excellent at defending and helping the team's general play in the build up to the final 3rd. Where he's lacking is in the final 3rd.

I think he could become a good CB if his contributions in the final 3rd don't improve.

I wonder with whom (realistically) would the doubters want to replace him. He might not be great going forward, but with Martial and Pogba on the left, that is really not the issue imo. Our weakness is our right side.

He's been solid on the left and gives Martial and Pogba freedom which is more than good enough

Some guy named Tierney apparently.

Played very well defensively today. Often you see the exasperation in his body language when a ball gets played in behind and he has to chase back but today he didn't get caught out at all. Hard to expect too much going forward when Martial is out.

He might do a job on the left of a back 3 but daft to suggest he'd be a good centre back.

I like Shaw, but If we were to get a more attacking one Chilwell would be my choice. I can definitely understand why Pep wants him.

Mofo was great once more, defensively he's a unit and although he has improved offensively, think there's still much room for improvement.

One of the POTY candidates for sure.

I've never seen Chilwell play, but on the left, we need a proper defender first and foremost imo. Martial and Pogba on the left is a huge attacking threat already, so we need someone to give them this freedom with solid defending imo

He's a keeper - he's been fantastic since Jose left along with the others.

Definitely needs to add more in attack but he making runs without being used at times.

One of the things that stood out about him as a youngster was that he was a strong runner. Had decent pace and was not easy to be shrugged off the ball while on the move. Gary Neville also spoke a bit about him being a strong runner.
1) This gave me confidence that he could be a player who will be able to cover the whole left flank and hence be available defensively and also overlap Martial often.
2) With the ball he is a good footballer, has a good touch, can pass, can shoot, have not seen how good he is with whipping a ball in, but yeah he sure can float decent balls in to the box.
The two points above made me feel he will be an asset in attack as well. But, he has just not been making enough runs out wide. I am not sure if it is cause of the injury or because of our tactics.
I will give him till the mid of next season to judge if he will ever be able to do justice to the attacking responsibilities of a LB in modern football. Lets see.

I sort of agree, but it'd be nice with an option more for the days when Martial doesn't turn it on. There's not much end-product in Shaw albeit he's solid at defending.

Fully agreed but since we have positions that we need to address urgently, I doubt there is money left for a LB. Young also signed a new contract and will most likely rotate

You're probably right on that one. This is why City becomes so good. They can afford backup players that are at 80-90% of the player they replace, and the first one in the order performs at 100%, creating a good competition between the two.
