That left side didn't play like they usually do for us. I think Bournemouth didn't let us get space on that side and that was their game plan. No wonder Martial had to go to the right to produce a cross as he hardly had space on the left.

For me great old fashioned LB but modern players in that position need to offer more offensively.

I like him. As others have mentioned he needs to improve a bit more when going forward but I think he’ll be our long term left back. It’s the centre of defence we need to worry about.

I agree. I thought he played well today. Better than solid in defence, pressed and tackled well. CB and RB need attention.

Get him working on beating the first man, he has an unbelievable knack of hitting the ball at the first man.

Other than that he's playing well.

If you get a real good attacking rb, 2 solid cbs, with a very good defensive luke shaw we will be fine.

Pogba attacks more from the left, along with martial and shaw thats plenty.

I always feel Shaw doesn't look mobile enough to be an attacking left back. He seems to occupy an excellent role for 3/4 of the pitch, being both a good defender and always making himself available for the pass, but I can't remember the last time he took on his man and put in a good cross. It's just not his strength.

Fine defensively and his passing was decent today, he does make some runs but Martial often ignores him, I do think he needs a more attack orintated option to rotate with him and challenge him.

Full on sprint he is so fast and it's very impressive.

Should use that more in attack though.

I’ve no worries on Shaw at all. He’s quality and will be for the next ten years

Honestly can't get how can anyone look at him and think he's gonna be our main long term fullback. Wish I have the same degree of optimism in life!

To be fair you think Pogba is rubbish....so yeah I mean maybe I'm a realist. I'd love 11 Messi's and Ronaldos but that's never going to happen. Shaw is the perfect balance for this team on the left side. I also feel his influence will grow over the next couple of years

He's never going to be a world beater, but he's a safe pair of hands. He's got good energy and attitude, just lacks a bit of quality on the ball. Can see him getting Heinze'd if we find a top wingback like Evra.

Regardless of whether you think he should be first choice or a squad player, I think we definitely need another left back at some point at a minimum to challenge him for a starting place.

He actually showed the positional awareness to successfully defend a 1-2 roll on him. It’s been absurd how slow and incapable he has been at doing that fundamental fullback task. He’s maturing his defensive side and it’s greay to see.

His offensive play is still better than average but can be improved. He’s got one of the best first touches in the team, has a great high press that wins us possession in the last 1/3rd, great acceleration+pace and most importantly knows how to play the triangles with Pogba, martial, Lingard. The biggest weakness he has offensively is his dribbling and decision making with the crossing. Because of all his other strengths mentioned, he more often than not overlaps well and gets himself in great positions but lacks that extra flair to make something great out of it each time.

Just like his defensive eureka moment today, I think it will come for him offensively too - especially in this new team.

There’s very few fullbacks that provide an upgrade on everything I just mentioned

Nonsense. Never said that. Love it when some don't even read posts accurately and just make things out of their mind.

Spot on.

Just needs regular game time, more experience and consistent coaching, which is the same for the whole team really.

Did he look completely gassed after about an hour or was that just me?

He's a good player, but thats it for me at this stage, he needs to kick on to the next level, of he can.

Doesn't need to attack too much with Pogba and Martial in front of him to be fair.
It could just be tactical. The right side has Herrera providing Balance as well as Lingard. Both track back. So Young is allowed to overlap more. I think Shaw may have to pick his moments. For one of the goals on a counter attack he ran into the oppositions box. In other situations he stays back more. Martial and Pogba are dangerous enough at times.

I am little bit disappointed in him. He is very good in defence and i have faith in him in that area but in attack he doesn't offer much. Alonso, Alaba, Marcelo, Alba, Mendy, even fecking Robertson are proof how full back can make impact in attack. He is solid option to have and deserves to be here but he is far for being some world class player. Young offers far more in attack than him.

He has between now and when we need to address lb to prove himself. We have other priorities to upgrade in the team before lb.

He’s a decent player at the moment. Still has some ways to develop, and we probably need to bring in another LB to rotate with him long-term. The right side can be handled by Dalot and Young, and we should be set until Young approaches retirement, at which point hopefully TFM might be ready to step up as the back-up.

I'm thrilled with this season for Luke. He's going to be a staple for us for the next 8-10 yrs I believe. He looks very capable to play the ball out of the back with combinations with his teammates to create space and possess the ball.

Tbf, he did a lot of sprints to open up the left side attackers. I noticed this since I wasn't convince about Luke, and wanted to find any sign of good LB there. It was a luke warm performance.

He's only 22 and still has a level or two to improve. Evra was a beast at 26-27 till his early 30s so Luke has plenty of time to catch up. He's already so good at doing the basics of a footballer and fullback

Thought he was good. Still improvement to come I think.

Right. He has lots of good qualities but is a confidence player and on his day is very good.

Can't help thinking he could loose a kilo or two though.

On how well he performs in his role as a fullback for us week in, week out.

"How well"? He plays for Manchester United, and Lucas Digne at Everton has more points this season alone for Everton than Shaw has in his entire United career. Fine if he were great defensively, or did other important stuff in attacking. But really, he doesn't. He gets skinned quote often in 1vs1 and his positional sense isn't great. His pace can save him sometimes but he certainly isn't great in any other way. Sorry.

Lucas Digne also isn't very good. Judging fullback on assists and goals is laughable.

Well, I didn't so. I just stated the fact. With that said, it says something. It says that Lucas Dignes end product is way better than Shaws. But I guess my point isn't about Digne at all, my point is that Shaw is really poor in the final third, as his stats suggest. And he doesn't make it up with great defending or something else to make up for his weakness. He's just average. I saw someone on here I think mention it, but people on here are just raving about him because we have had so little to be positive about. He really doesn't do a lot and it becomes fairly obvious when we could compare his games to Alex Sandro in Juventus for example when they met.
