There will be very little interest in him at any of the top level clubs tbh - best he could hope for is a mid-table/lower table premier league club willing to take a punt on him.

I don’t expect the top six to go for him, but clubs like West Ham and Everton.

Don’t think his weight is the real problem, real issue is he isn’t that good on the ball. That was area of his game that needed improving when he signed and it just hasn’t happened. He just doesn’t have the passing or crossing ability that you need at a top side to be first choice.

Don’t see this season being any different to the last one for him and assume he will leave on a free next summer.
What does that really say about our other fullbacks tho as for me Shaw is clearly the best and most inventive passer out of the lot of them. The only one bar possibly Darmian that will venture near the oppo’s Box as well.
Our fullback situation in general is dire.
His crossing is pretty non existent at this point that is for sure, I think all his problems go back to that game where Jose roasted him and hung him out to dry for pushing forward on the attack when we had the ball, the move broke down and he was out of position. He didn’t play again for quite some time after that andto me he just looks lost as to when he can go and when Jose would prefer him to sit.

When Young is in form he provides more going forward than Shaw does. People seem to have let his poor second half of the season blind them to how he performed in the first half of the season. Hell, in each of the last three seasons he's started down the pecking order and then when he's gotten the opportunity he's grabbed it and out-performed all our other fullbacks.

The question of course is, considering his age, what level Young will be able to play at over the next season or two? Was his poorer form in the latter part of the season going to become more and more common? Or was it a blip and he'll generally perform like he did earlier in the season? I am worried he's on the way down, but it does annoy me how so many seem to forget the good performances he has given us over the last few years.

Back to Shaw, I've been disappointed in his performances in these two friendlies.

I kinda agree with a portion of what you’re saying but my gripe with Young is more a consequence of him being a right footed player. Nothing frustrates me more with him than seeing him cut it back on to his right when there is an achre of space in front of him to go at, I know he can cross with his left, I’ve seen him do it but for whatever reason he just doesn’t.

Shaw doesn’t do it enough but on the occasions he does for me he causes more panic and upset the few occasions he did it last night him just doing that created a bit of chaos or danger. I’d much rather Ashley is played on the right because he can whip in deadly early crosses that way and Lukaku would thrive on that kind of service.

I didn’t see the first game but I watched last night and there were certain things I saw from Shaw where I was like ok that’s decent but he and pretty much the whole team bar Alexis looked like they were playing at half throttle if that. You would think he’d be trying to make a huge statement on this tour but a lot of them seem to be on cruise control at the moment.

I guess in a way I just keep hoping the guy that was at Southampton waltzing past people like they weren’t there and causing havoc shows up at some point as if he can get back to that then what a player.

If he is 1 year from seeing out his contract and we have yet to sell him then maybe Jose does see Shaw as a last chance saloon.

We must really not have many options in defence to keep that mentality otherwise why let his contract run out and let him go on a free.

As an English LB you could still nick a decent fee for him. I expect this to be his last chance under Mourinho.

It looks like he is going to play against Leicester . He really needs to put some mega performances in and push Young to the right.

I think his parents missed a trick there with "Hoare". Should've gone with Matthew. Or Mark. Ideally both, of course, but there's something to be said for not going completely overboard.

He's missing loads of ingredients to become a top LB and I don't think he'll gain any of them. He has good dribbling in free space but his crossing is crap and his defense isn't good enough, seems to always struggle with positional awareness but since he mostly plays against crap teams nowadays this hardly gets exposed. He doesn't boost any confidence to play him against a top team unlike Young.

Simply not good enough. We're wasting time by giving him chance after chance to end up playing Young at the end, instead of just buying a top LB like any club in the world will do.

Sums up Shaw perfectly

Darmian offered far more going forwards as a right-wing back than Shaw did as a left-wing back. Decent shot after a corner, otherwise Shaw's attacking contribution was unimpressive. None of the defenders seemed that comfortable when defending in that system.

I really want to see him succeed. He was abysmal today.

He isn't a very good footballer. He is pretty shit offensively. Isn't great defensively. He always gets injured. Even when not injured, can't stay fit and has training problems.

Why exactly is he at the club? We all want Darmian gone but he's shown far more then Shaw ever has. And Darmian can at least play on both sides and stay fit (not that I'm saying to keep him, but for perspective).

Can't remember the last time I saw him make a successful aerial cross. Honestly think he's worse than Valencia at it.

He's not as good as I thought he was. Crossing is terrible. Gets into decent areas occasionally and then messes up the final ball. There are better left backs out there.

Before he broke his leg, Shaw was beginning to live up to the hype and genuinely looked like a future world class LB. Since, however, he had looked poor, lacks confidence and generally disappointing. He's clearly not good enough for us but I'll never slate him as the leg break was bloody unlucky!

Was at the game today. Awful tbh. More of a liability than Darmian was on both ends, which is saying something. Understand its just one game and preseason, but he was just terrible.

It was 8 games.

He had struggled the previous season too.

I think he needs a bit more time and a longer run in the team. That’s the problem at United, we can’t afford to carry players - especially defenders - who aren’t performing at the required level.

Luke Shaw is a mystery to me. He has had good games but, honestly, there have not been that many.

You never want to write a player off, especially a youngster that should still have a decade ahead of them. However, its really hard to see 'it' with Shaw. He has moments where it looks like things are falling into place but its only ever moments.

Luke Shaw's talent is not a myth, he was incredible at Southampton and in the games he played in the leg break season. Was insanely good at 1 on 1 defending, sharp passer, good first touch and also very energetic on the field. When he's in full flow, he's a force to be reckoned with. Sadly, haven't seen that level of performance post leg break.

Still not given up on him, I think a run of games will do him a world of good. If he consistently plays in the first team for at least 7-8 games in a row, I think we will see a much better player.

His first season was very disappointing for me. Really poor defensively, which I didn't expect. People were cutting him loads of slack because he was "yong and lernin" and we were excited about signing him but he kept getting the basics wrong. Obviously a worry if he's still making basic defensive errors, several seasons later.

He's in his 5th season here now and had about 8 good games.

He's been here for 5 years, he barely gave us 10 good matches and yet, here is, moving into his 6 year with us until we hope he finally fecks in the horizon. I am not even sure that will happen. If he can give us 2-3 decent games then people will recall how talented he is and we might even give him a long term contract because of it. FFS he might even hold us to ransom telling us that the moment is gone and we were stupid not to offer him a new contract before. That's the kind of situation we're in.

However he's not alone to have lingered at Hotel Manchester United. Anderson stayed with us for 8 years, Hargreaves hoped in and out of the treatment room for 4 years. Rojo can only justify 4 months of decent football in the past 4 years. Darmian is still here despite being cack. Ah and I almost forgot those who overstayed. Carrick, Gaz, Keane, Giggs....the list is endless. God knows what they contributed to the team during their last year of contract and if a player has ties to the manager then we make sure we pay the debt on his behalf (Valdes, Bastian, Owen).

That's the reason why United are in this sorry state. Players have no urgency to improve and certainly no fear that one mistake can cost them their career at this great club. We are slow to lose patience and very quick to get excited about and to forgive.

If its true that he refused to go to Everton then I honestly wonder what the feck we're playing him for. Let him rot with the U18s up until the time is ripe for him to feck off and give Mitchell a chance.

Since he naturally filled out, he’s lost that agility, his co-ordination is poor and on top of that his crossing is outrageously bad.

Tierney is the only solution - it’s a shame Shaw won’t accept a move there in exchange, because in reality that’s his current level and a few years of regular football in that environment could be his only hope of salvaging his career.

Has that actually happened?

Did Celtic even want him? The only club I've seen him linked to was Everton who he turned down. Tierney also isn't the only solution, there are quite a few good left backs around at the moment.

Thought he had a decent game in some ways last night but definitely noticed at least 3 times when he made a brain-dead decision in the final third.

I'm glad that the penny is dropping.
I've been saying this for a while and have copped a lot of flack over this.
The more game time Shaw gets, the more it will dawn on fans that Southampton is his correct level.

BTW, if anyone wants to see a young player who wants to succeed (and support), look no further than Andreas Pereira .
That guy is busting a gut to break into the first team and I do hope that Jose puts him in our first team. And unlike Martial and Shaw, who need an arm around their shoulder to play well and work hard, AP, will put in a shift, regardless.

If he rejected Everton I can’t see him going there, which is a shame because hypothetically it’d be a good move for all parties involved.

And yes while obviously there are a number of left backs who could come in and do steady a job, like Ryan Bertrand etc Tierney is the one with the best potential to be a long-term solution IMO.

You think Celtic and the Scottish league is Shaw’s current level? Tierney is good but people thinking he is any better than Shaw are in for a fecking shock if we were to sign him.

No doubt he will eventually in time get to hopefully a very high standard but he’s not at the level of Shaw currently sooooo....

Tierney can cross - instant upgrade.

What is Shaw’s current level? Mediocre. Bursts forward then is clueless once he gets in the final third

Does he even know how to give a Ariel cross? Never seen him do it. His low crosses always hits the first defender. I'm struggling to like him, but he doesn't seem to have tools in his locker to be top LB.
