I found it interesting that in his interview he said "Mourinho wants me to attack more" and "I feel like I can do more going forwards".

Many including myself thought Mourinho was telling Shaw to remain more defensive, but we can see why he's been frustrated with him if he wanted the opposite.

He has been playing under shackles it seems for a little while, but hopefully this goal fills him with confidence.

Delighted for the lad. Hopefully it spurs him on. There's a good footballer in there

For me, whenever he starts, he does well. He just never gets a run of games to build on said performances. I know that's not a popular opinion on here but it's what I think. :p
I agree. Did very little wrong when he played last season

Completely agree. When Shaw plays for us he's generally much better than Young, for me.

If we give him the games then he'll produce the goods. I'm quite hopeful on that front.

The French commentator on the channel I was watching said, "anything is possible in football, even Luke Shaw scoring"

Great goal though and a good performance. Looks leaner than last year too, so hopefully he keeps his motivation and confidence going. Well done Luke.

Absolutely delighted for the boy he scored last night, although secondary to his game, it will do his confidence the world of good. Didn't have an amazing game last night, nobody did, bar maybe Pogba and De Gea, I did see he switched off at one point which nearly led to a goal but otherwise great defensively but perhaps needs more work doing timing his runs and his final pass when forward.

Listening to his post match interview, (which I thought the pundits were horrible with their questions to the poor guy, he'd had a good game and all they could focus on was his past two disappointing seasons), he came across as having a great attitude despite the press and manager suggesting otherwise, and he's looking an absolute unit currently, apparently he's smashing all the fitness tests in training. If he keeps it up Youngy will be playing second fiddle to him this year, no doubt. He's here to fight for his place where others would have fled looking for an easier ride. That doesn't sound like a poor attitude to me. He'll come good with regular games.

He was very good last night and gave a really good interview after the match.
I just hope he can stay fit and keep it up, our fullback situation won't be quite as dire if he does.

Really happy to see Shaw score, shows how much determination and fight he has.

Re: him wanting to attack more, to be honest I wonder what he thinks attack is because last night, he'd run up the line fine, but every time he got the ball he'd just lay it off. Rarely took a player on, rarely ran with the ball. Same with Darmian. So when he says attack, what does he actually mean?

Chuffed for him. Yes he made a few mistakes defensively but overall made a good contribution. Jose just needs to let the lad have a good run and I reckon he won't be disappointed with the end product. Let him make and learn from his mistakes - it will work out in the end is my belief.

When Young comes back, Jose needs to put him on the right and leave Shaw where he belongs.

Also the look on his face when he scored was so sweet. Reckon that will give him a confidence boost.

Don't worry, he'll get there. He just needs the manager to give him a long spell in the team and not be shoved back on to the bench.

Just watched the post-match interview with MUTV. The moment the interviewer said "Goalscorer, match winner at Old Trafford," he had this shy smile on his face that he can't hide any longer which is adorable. Don't think he's that great of a left back but he's still a kid after all.

Being realistic I don't expect him to displace Young as a starter due to plain preference. He scored a goal but Jose could look at the goal Leicester scored and feel Young would have done more to stop it coming in. Nothing necessarily wrong with that assessment. If or when he ends up getting benched by Young my hope is people don't reinvent the narrative to Shaw being undeserving because he's a fatty or something similarly ridiculous.

actually i hope Young goes to right back. He is naturally right footed

To be fair, while Shaw was decent during that run he wasn't as good as what Young had been before he was suspended. Of course, Young himself wasn't very good after that either and Shaw probably should have had more opportunities.
This was the crux of the matter. Shaw shouldn't have been dropped.

Explains why Young was playing ahead of him. Shaw was mostly fine defensively and contributed well in his run of games last season but wasn't contributing in the final third. Young wasn't as good defensively but wasn't shocking and doing better at attacking.

The only way our defence evolves into what it could be is if we suffer watching Bailly, Lindelof & Shaw starting 80% of our matches this year.

If they do, we wont finish in the top 4, but they could become the players they threaten to be.

I rate all of them but this is not how players are supposed to be brought along. Having Toby in there to provide a steady hand and continuity would have been perfect.

This is my ideal solution for the season, with Dalot being phased in, whilst Young is our main RB - consigning Valencia to history.
I agree, a good thing about Dalot is he can play both flanks, so until he finds his feet in the league he should get plenty of minutes.
For now i’d Like to see Young on the right putting in early crosses and Shaw on the left.

I was delighted for Luke Shaw to get his first goal in senior football.

Mourinho has been critical of Shaw in the past but he was full of praise for him afterwards, and rightly so.

Luke made one mistake - towards the end of the game when he was caught in possession inside his own area by Vardy - but he will not need to be told about it.

He is the best left-back at the club when he is fit and flying so I am glad he has got his goal, because it should take a bit of pressure off him.

He's the only left back at the club

This 100%. Missing out on Toby because of perceived value to me was a mistake. IF we don't suffer injuries and pick him up in Jan then it could be ok but this is us and I think we will suffer injuries at CB as per usual.

Seems a great kid with a good attitude I'm.delighted he scored his 1st goal in senior football but unlike most on here I think he's a very average player. I like most was so happy we signed him at the time we all thought he would be England's left back for 15 years . In my opinion he simple cannot defend he leaves huges gaps on his side of defence and he just doesn't seem to learn . Id love nothing more than him to prove me wrong and become our left back because we need one but I just can't see it .

He can't just let himself go to shit if he finds himself on the bench, losing condition and focus. That's not the type of player we need at the club! Young was England's first choice left back for a reason. Shaw has been below par. One game does not change that he needs to keep the focus and doing whatever Mou is asking.

Cut the dude some slack. He basically said in his interview he's gonna give it his all this season and that's good enough for me. People forget, myself included, that they aren't robots however often they play like they are ;) He's had a difficult couple years after such a massive injury during a spell of looking very decent in the Van Gaal team. That type of injury is a career-ender 5 times out of 10. After some real time in team, I reckon he'll show us why United were right to pluck him from Southampton.

He looked like a giddy little boy when doing the interview with Sky. It showed a real human side to him that I've not seen before. I really did believe him when he said that moment for him was the best in his career.

Very good, borderline great performance from Luke, hope he can continue where he left off before his horrible injury. Goal will do wonders for his confidence.

I'm pretty sure he was fouled by Vardy on that one occasion, so can't hold it against him, rather against the ref.

Of course you have to be delighted for Shaw, he's been through the mill ever since his leg break a few years ago. I really hope that he kicks on and becomes our LB for this season because i'd rather him than Young. Will Jose ever trust him enough? I don't know.

Also forgot to add that I fully expect him to be dropped by Mourinho the moment Young becomes available, irregardless of his performances up to that point.

Would love to be proven wrong on this .

He was not shaky defensively he made one mistake. He was lucky with the first touch ok, but he was great with the shot from that angle with a volley.
he was just poor going forward, under slight pressure he hoofed the ball forward or passed it backwards, he did great with the goal although lucky bounce for him... defensively he is not focused enough, not close enough to players often etc. wasn't feeling well about his defending at all in the last 10 minutes. Even if he was defensively solid like Valencia whih he isn't he is nowhere near enough going forward, due to his average crossing and nonexistent dribbling, he also seemed to lost his first touch which he had a decent one but perhaps this goal will help him but I don't think at all this was a decent game from him. Goal can change a lot

His crossing was undeniably awful whenever he played last season. If it hasn't improved he'll be back on the bench pretty quick.

His crossing is a weird one in that it is basically non existent. He rarely seems to try an aerial cross, he always wants to use his pace get to the byline and either cut a ball back or lay it across the box. Unfortunately we don’t really play in a manner where that is effective so he is going to have to learn to put in more aerial balls.

This. But he just ended up booting it at the central defender most of the time though.

Isn't that what our regular right back also does? Boot it against the only player standing in front of him.

This is also true I must admit. He’s been taking to many crossing lessons from Valencia in that regard. Sure there was one on Friday where he did exactly that.

To be fair, it's an issue with many modern fullbacks. Teams now use their fullbacks to work the channels. Watched Alba last night get into so many attacking positions but don't think he crossed it once.

This is why Young looks so good. He can actually cross a third of the time

Aye but then saying this Liverpool scored from Robertson doing exactly what Shaw tries and so did City with Mendy cutting a ball back to the pen spot. They however did it at pace, on the counter and before the oppo had set up. We just don’t counter attack to exploit these kind of situations.

Shaw does need to get better at crossing this is for sure, the team also needs to get better at getting players in and around the box before teams set up to stop it.
