He seemed like quite a nervous/fragile character in the interview. Hope the goal give him some confidence and he can kick on
To be fair, while Shaw was decent during that run he wasn't as good as what Young had been before he was suspended. Of course, Young himself wasn't very good after that either and Shaw probably should have had more opportunities. The sad thing is though Mourinho will drop him the minute Young becomes available again. We saw it last season - Shaw got a run of games in Dec/Jan and was pretty good but got benched the minute Young came back from his suspension.
I have no idea what game you watched, he was excellent all night. For the most part he was defensively solid and always offered support on attacks.
If he can play like that for the full season, we don't need a left back
Would like to see Young at right back. Damien was useless. A back 4 of Young Bailout Lindehof Shaw with a midfield of Fred Andreas and Paul and upfront Sanchis Lukaku and Martial and we can compete with anyone
What about Dalot???
And I think he played a part in the first goal too, Young wouldn't have made that run.I have no idea what game you watched, he was excellent all night. For the most part he was defensively solid and always offered support on attacks.
If he can play like that for the full season, we don't need a left back
Really feel happy for him
Happy for him.
on being in the position he was to score the goal
"We worked on it a lot in training when Juan comes inside it gives me licence to push on and get forward. I know the quality Juan's got and I knew he was going to pick me out and I got in the box - great first touch as Gary said(!) but no, for me it is my first goal and the most important one. It doesn't matter how I score it but at least I'm up and running now."
on his touch for the goal
"I was meant to come inside but I think I managed to get there before him, got my foot on it and put it in the other corner. Schmeichel came up to me after and was like: 'You spawny man! You're lucky' but I said I didn't care, and I don't care how it goes in."
on what it was like to see the ball crossing the line
"For my career so far it is the best feeling I've had and I want more feelings like that. That is why you come to stadiums like this - teams like this - to score and help the team. Honestly, the best feeling to date was today."
on the 'reports' about him passing fitness tests
"I've worked really hard over the pre-season. I've had a lot of time off and a lot of time to think and do what I needed to do. Fitness-wise I felt very good. I'm a bit disappointed with my performances over pre-season because I know I could have done much better - even tonight I know I can still do better - and that is what I want to be: a better player. I'll keep working hard, I'll keep showing the manager what I can do and hopefully I'll stay in the team and keep going."
on pushing on to become United and England's number 1 leftback this season
"I hope so. I don't want to speak too soon after one game but I'm working really hard and I want to be up there with the best leftbacks in the world and with a great manager and teammates behind me I think I've got the foundations to do that here at Manchester United. I want to be back in the England squad and I want to be involved in competitions like the World Cup. I think mentally that is what pushed me on even more because over the summer it was amazing to see how they had done but then disappointing for myself to be sat at home watching. I've been to the World Cup in Brazil and I want to in the World Cups and the Euros and be fighting for a place here in the Champions League and the Prem games."
on being encouraged to go forward
"I look back at last season and don't think I was playing the way that people knew what a footballer I was with my attacking capabilities. This season I think I've felt more confident - especially today - and I want to keep doing that. Obviously, defending is the first thing for a fullback but nowadays it is all about attacking and I think I'm known for attacking and helping the team create chances and goals and I did that today.
on what he has to do to become a regular leftback under Jose
"Work hard, give 100%. He likes a player with desire, workrate and aggressiveness. He does like me to attack and I think last season that is why he was a bit disappointed with me because he knew I could do that and wasn't doing that when I was playing he said. Of course, defending is very important for him. He likes to keep the team compact and defending is the most important thing for him. I think I'm learning more about that, watched a lot of videos and I get a lot of help from him and the two new coaches we have in Kieran [McKenna] and Carras (Carrick) this season."
on Luke Shaw
"I'm very pleased. In 90 minutes he made one mistake and it is the kind of mistake where the linesman could help and give a freekick for us and solve the problem. He was very good defensively. He was good with the ball, physically he coped well. He had a good pre-season. He was one of the guys who played every match and trained for five weeks."
