Luke Shaw: ‘People can say I’m fat but I’ve never been out of shape’

I'm more concerned about the Coco pops monkey.

I’m more concerned about the fact that he seems to shave his arms…

He looks a bit leaner but mostly the same. Thing is, he was never fat.

He was never "fat" by the standard of the average bloke on the street, but I remember a few seasons ago when he came back after his injury, I was actually shocked by how overweight he looked on the pitch.

At that level of football, any extra poundage sticks out like a sore thumb.

He'll never be svelte and his baggy shorts and low socks combo probably make him look even stockier, but he's in good shape now and in good form, so if he stays the way he is now, that's fine by me!

He's got a stocky build and even at his best fitness, he looks thick.

What I've not seen discussed is how that helps him just shrug off opponents as if they're children. It's not all negative.

He has proved a lot of people wrong hasn’t he

Good shout, though i think i'd definitely have Shaw over him due to availability and how well Shaw's filled in at LCB.

Those 5 our standout performers i guess, followed by Bruno & Eriksen.
For me, it’s Casemiro, Martinez, Rashford and Varane at the top. Probably Martinez edging it for the season as a whole. Shaw just behind these for me, but I can see where you’re coming from.

Yep definitely me, although is lows were really low last season. He was out of position so many times my calculator would break if I counted them. He really looks like a different footballer this season and I'm happy for him (and us).

He always was a good footballer. It was his fitness that was brought into question, by his managers as well as us fans. What ETH has done wonders with is his positioning.

Yeah they’ve all had really good seasons for various reasons, that much we agree on!

Luke Shaw is so fat, that if he got any fatter, he'd be overweight.

Been in top form lately. Only thing missing from his game is the assist. If he can get more assist then he’ll become one of the best LB.

Shaw wasn’t as heavy as say someone like Bosnich. But then again keepers aren’t expected to run down the flank, although they need to be agile.

I definitely feel like he's been out of shape quite a few times in his United career, and I think that is one of the main reasons for his dips in form over the years

I'm not talking about his size or shape. I'm talking to his match fitness and showing clear fatigue in games. He just seems to be someone who takes longer than average to get to match fitness after an injury or being out of the side.

Shaw is one of those players people immediately target when things go wrong, even Mourinho does/did it.

He’s clearly never been fat even for a footballer people just don’t like him. It’s weird people have so much of a focus on his body, especially men.

He's one of a selection of players who are quality, but have a set of posters on here just waiting with bated breath for them to have a bad game or run of form, so that they can tell us all about how bad they actually are and how we can never challenge for the title with them in the side.

Not really. Men make up the majority of football fans, and they care more about footballers than women do.

On top of that, players regularly get body shamed if they’re not lean. ‘Fat Frank’, Charlie Adam, Rooney holiday pics, Lukaku etc, it’s stupid and a symptom of a toxic English media but it’s sadly a norm.

Then over the years you’ve had images like this of Shaw

Where he doesn’t appear in the greatest shape and see the above about fat shaming etc.

So it’s not really ‘weird’ per se, more unfortunate I’d say.

This isn’t fat mate and I’m pretty sure it’s in pre season. Also, cameras and lighting play a role and he’s clearly carrying a muscle.

Nice try though, add this one to your wank bank and get it away from me.

…I’m not sure you’ve really grasped the sentiment of my post tbh.

Also, there are far worse pics of Shaw out there, I’ve been kind.

What's the big issue? Sometimes he's clearly been out of shape, what's the harm in stating the obvious. He can say he's never been out of shape, and compared to the average Joe he hasn't been, but even compared to his own standards he has clearly been out of shape at some points. Would we claim Sancho has looked in peak fitness as well despite evidence to the contrary?

It translates to sluggish performances, poor 90 minute performances, and taking quite a bit of time to reach peak match sharpness, certainly I've seen quicker players to do that. It stands to reason, because a) it has been visible at times and b) I think one of his major challenges over the years has been his focus and approach to the game, and anyone that has suffered with a mental approach to anything knows it can sometimes affect peak physical performance and motivation. Especially when we're talking about the elite level, the top 1% of the top 1% of athletes where even a small margin will come to light. He doesn't have to be obese for it to show.

It happened but thankfully it's less the case now. He has been more consistent overall in the last few years. Physically, mentally, performance - everything is better. It's all part of the same set of reasons most likely.

There's a difference between being out of shape and being fat, with the latter being the topic of this thread.

I've mentioned it a couple of times on here before but I've been told by a friend of his he spends all afternoon sat on the sofa playing FIFA and glugging Lucozade by the gallon.

Maybe he's stopped.

He's a classic Endomorph. I'm the same. Higher body fat, and less muscle mass but you can make a drastic body change quite easily with a body recomposition and add mass quickly.

It's both a blessing and a curse to have this body type.

You're just made of glass.
