Luke Shaw: ‘People can say I’m fat but I’ve never been out of shape’

If you need to address people who think you are fat, and list reasons why you might look fat but aren't really fat. Then you have an unhealthy relationship with you body.

Whether you are fat, slim, athletic, ripped, obese. You acknowledge it and deal with it. Don't do this nonsense of 'I may look fat but I just have a big body type.'
No not really. It's perfectly natural to respond to something you believe untrue if the accusations have been relentless for the last 3 years.

Then he won't make it as a modern day full back. You can't carry that up and down the pitch at speed for 90 minutes at that level.

Fortunately I think you're wrong and he'd definitely be able to drop a bit of weight if he wants to enough.
Look at Marcelo

I think you ignored what the actual response was.

'My fitness levels are between myself and my trainers and coaches. If they feel I need to improve then I'll give my all to become fitter'

vs

“I always look big because I’m bigger built – I’ve got that Wayne Rooney type of body.”

Nobody mention to him that Rooney was at his best when he was at his leanest (2009-10 and a very short period in late 2011). Not sure it's the excuse he should be using.

I dunno mate I don't buy it. It's kinda fecked up how you guys are reacting in here because for all we know the guys trying his hardest and for whatever reason that's as far as he's gotten.

To be honest, if it's the case that he's been trying his hardest we should have sold him last summer.

If he's just taken a long time to learn how to look after himself, mentally and physically, in a way that lets him play for United for 90 minutes a couple of times a week, then that's much better news. It might mean that he is in with a chance of pulling it all together and making himself a useful, or better still an important, member of the team.

Exactly. We never did. I gotta believe the people at the club know what they are doing.

Actually the first response is really terrible! I am glad that none of our players is stupid enough to say something like that! It shifts the responsibility to the trainers and coaches. If the reporter wants to find the truth, he has to also contact the trainers and coaches and ask them if they are happy with the player's training or not, if the player follows their instructions or not. This cannot happen, since it would create a mess.

Shaw's response is better.

Ah yes it shifts the responsibility to say that you'll put everything into becoming fitter if required by the coaching staff. It's better to say that you've got a Wayne Rooney body. The fact that you say that this is a matter between you and your trainers basically puts your trainers off limits. Journalists do not have the access levels required to ask the coaches these things.

You basically are ignorant of the way players deal with their fitness. They are given certain requirements by the coaching staff and have to meet these requirements. That is the truth and it's irrelevant whether you think it shifts responsibility, that's how football players operate.

People are acting like he's Gary Neville in his last season for United. It's clearly not affecting his performances so why this continues to be such a big deal is bizarre.

You think reduced fitness isn't affecting his performances? He's playing fairly solidly. But he's not providing anything like the attacking thrust he did at his fittest.

Find it weird that majority of this thread has revolved around his weight/body shape.

The things I find more pertinent are that Mourinho actually believes that Shaw can be a top LB. We've not seen that quality on the field and many have said that he was overrated but, the manager continues to believe that there is something there and he gets that based on first hand knowledge. The other thing is that what we really should know, that what we see/read/hear in public is far from the entire story. That Mou might call out or be hard in public to some players, but doesn't mean only man manages with the stick which is how a lot of people see it. Lastly, this is truly last chance saloon for Shaw and United - he either proves his worth or he leaves on a free. Hopefully he'll do enough to at least get a run of games - with the start of the season, he has a real chance to stake his claim.

What do we make of his shape nowadays, is he still considered 'fat'? Still has the booty but his overall physique looks impressive these days.

What’s the tattoo on his left arm say? “In the end, they’ll (can’t read, starts with an s) me anyway. So whatever”

He looks a bit leaner but mostly the same. Thing is, he was never fat.

He was never fat. His physique is very useful for defending. He's bulky but very fast and has a low centre of gravity

"In the end they'll sugar me anyway. So whatever."

"In the end they'll judge me anyway. So whatever."

"In the end they'll sugar me anyway. So whatever."

"In the end they'll judge me anyway. So whatever."

Basically saying “In the end they (fans) will love me anyway, so might as well eat the burgers and chips (with Rooney).”

What a season he's had. Top 4 behind Lica, Case, Rashford or am I missing another candidate? You could possibly even debate top 3 if you consider availability, consistency and versatility. But the 2 new signings' overall impact & Rashfords 30 goals is hard to ignore.

Doesn’t matter how in shape he gets, he’ll always be Fatboy Shaw. And I wouldn’t have him any other way

He's a classic Endomorph. I'm the same. Higher body fat, and less muscle mass but you can make a drastic body change quite easily with a body recomposition and add mass quickly.

It's both a blessing and a curse to have this body type.

Ok brother played for saints youth team and has a lot of connections down there, he said Poch was like a father to him and quickly worked out he needed a specific nutrition coach, he’s big boned frame and has to eat the right food but considering his double leg break, I would say we’ve had 4/5 good seasons from the 8/9 seasons he’s been here I think we’ll se the best of him in next two years and he’s already world class.

If you look at his face you can see he was in much better shape after he got dropped. He’s lying to himself to say otherwise.
