Luiz Gustavo

You could easily play with Cazorla from the left and Walcott on the right, Arteta would probably lose out like you said and it's never a guarantee that Wilshere will play every game. I think he'd start in the vast majority of Arsenal's matches and would be a huge addition to the squad in terms of strength in depth.

Yeah but I was just being devil's advocate here. Wenger is way to set in his ways to upset the apple cart. Even if he knows the cart needs fixing.

You have no idea.

This is a man who was asked "If I give you 150 million to spend, what would you do"
Wenger's answer : "Give it back"

That's just bollox, Wenger has consistently spent his budget on transfers and especially wages.

You're probably right, those are massive wages for an, albeit talented, water carrier. No way is he worthy of earning more than the likes of Cazorla and Wilshere.
He's a solid player but he'd basically only be a part of the team, far from the most important player they'd have. If teams like Wolfsburg are getting that much money to pay their players (most likely from Volkswagen who are their sponsors as pointed out) then I fear the direction transfer market is heading in.

Maybe they're offering him a brand new Golf to sweeten the deal?

It's the £130k that'd be a stumbling block in any negotiations if the figure is true, no way Wenger would be making him the top earner. It goes to show that not every player out there dreams about the magnificent Premier League though.
He expressed his desire to play for Arsenal the other day though.

United and Arsenal are having a competition between them to see who can have the most inept transfer window. Arsenal edging it so far. 3rd United bid for Fabregas might swing it back in our favour.

That £40,000,001 bid that didn't even trigger any clause will still top our own comparative inadequacies.

It triggered the shitstorm, I assume we read the contract and knew exactly what it would do.

Well we are still being linked with Fellaini so we have room to create an even bigger shitstorm.

Apparently the fee is €22m and Gustavo will earn £131k a week

Source for that figures (especially the salary)?

Everything I read about that deal in the German media stated an annual salary of around 7 Mil €, which would be closer to 100k pounds a week. This are of course still massive wages for a player like Gustavo, but nothing out of the ordinary for Wolfsburg. They are overpaying their players, because the salary is their strongest and often times sole arguments for getting players. They actually have in total the 2nd highest wage bill in the Bundesliga. They are just underperforming badly for a couple of years due to pathetic management. They should have no excuse for not making it to the CL.

Yep, that was the summer "howler". With his tantrum that followed, you couldn't write that stuff. At least potato head has kept quiet.

Big wages for Gustavo. Would make more sense for us to stay clear of him if those figures are correct.

I saw it on Honigstein's twitter. The information didn't come from him though, it was a retweet.

They made things awkward for a rival team and it cost them nothing. I don't know whether that was the intention but, if things stay as they are, I'm not seeing how this was a mistake, let alone a 'howler'.

My initial reaction is to laugh at Arsenal but then I think it might be depressingly representative that a player would rather go to a club like Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga over Arsenal in the PL. Then again, maybe they are just paying him a shit load of cash. I don't believe that Arsene drew the line at 14m when they wanted £17m, not even he is that fecking tight with cash. £17m is a cracking price for someone like Gustavo and regardless of the reasons, Arsenal fans will go nuts if this is true.

It was less money separating us and wenger that meant Alonso never signed for Arsenal.

He is parodically tight.

Why are we not in for him.Seems to be a good player.

Probably not comfortable with playing 130k a week for a back up/squad player.

If we are struggling to give that to Nani I can't see us giving that to 1 of those dastardly midfield types.

Wha'? He'd be a nailed on starter.

You would think that I guess, but in my eyes its Carrick +1. No doubt between Cleverley, Anderson, Giggs he would have his period of bench games too.

I would have liked him but I can see why the club are maybe hastey.

Alonso went for £31M, way above what he was worth. Wenger is sensible, not like Dalgleish spending the club's money like a drunk in an off-licence.

Alonso was easily worth that money.

he went for that a year later.

and was well worth it.

Sensible is nice. But sensible doesn't get you laid.

Nope. Too limited to play next to Carrick, and obviously not better than Carrick. He'd be a superb buy, but at the moment he doesn't really fit into the starting XI.
The idea that he's limited as a footballer is just wrong. He's do more there than any of our other midfielders.

Rather surprised how this one ended.

Maybe he just wanted to stay in Germany

He will go to Wolfsburg, no doubt. They are willing to pay both the transfer fee and his salary wishes (and why should he accept less than what he has at the moment), Arsenal are able but not willing.
But the main driver for his decision should be a more or less guaranteed starting spot. Scolari has made it clear that he prefers players who *play*, and we have a WC in his home country coming up. A once in a lifetime chance, and we all know that for Brazilians, that is even more important than for anyone else.

Seing what an important role he has in the Selecao, i think he is a steal for that money. He has shown only about 80% of his potential at Bayern due to his infrequent playtime. Before Martinez fully arrived (around matchday 12), he was among the best at Bayern.
Not a flamboyant jersey-selling machine, but a true team player who had his best matches against strong opponents, like the half final against Madrid in 2012.

Edit: "Bild" reports: transfer to Wolfsburg complete.

Sorry for gif but

'I have considered everything. I knew about everything. My heart decided on Wolfsburg. Wolfsburg have always been after me. They wanted me from the very beginning. That is the reason, I am here. It is a good project here'.

Not the wallet that's £40K a week better off?

Nope, the reports of €8m/year salary and €22m fee were rubbished. He just chose to stay in Germany over your lot
