Luis Nani | 2013/14 Performances

He was rusty as hell yesterday when he came on, but he still looked capable of doing something brilliant. The pass to Hernandez before the van Persie chance a good example.

That's what sets him apart. He's always capable of coming up with something special, no matter how rusty or poor he's performing. One things for sure, he still looked a lot more effective than Young and Valencia, even if they are better defensively.

I think Nani being poor defensively is a myth. His back-tracking has improved hugely, and he's an underrated tackler. Seems to love getting stuck in sometimes. Ashley Young isn't as good as Nani at that. Valencia has huge energy levels, but his tracking of overlaps is woeful sometimes. Seen him get a bollocking from the right backs for losing his man so often. Valencia's a very good tackler, and makes good challenges with his body, being as big and strong as he is. I personally don't think either are better defensively. I think all 3 have differing strengths and weaknesses when off the ball.

I don't think many will argue that Valencia isn't better than him defensively, it's just that the gap isn't as big as some on here make it out to be.

Nani needs a show of faith and a proper run in the team in one position. Probably right wing, because Valencia is not playing well enough IMO and should be a backup at the moment.

Not sure who we should play on the left but we have a problem there also. Young gets picked because he can cross the ball but is otherwise out of form. Kagawa is the best player but is not naturally suited to the left wing. Welbeck offers the most work rate but really needs to play up top now I think. Rooney will just wander in and unbalance the attack. Opportunity knocks for Zaha and Januzaj!

People are way overrating importance of defending in this case, if you ignore player names you would think some people here are talking about our defenders, and not wingers.
Of course every winger should do his job and track back, but all our wingers are good at it, and after all, they are tracking back against fullbacks, it's not like they have Messi on fullback position to defend against.
Gary Neville, said last year when talked about defending against Manchester City something like that teams who did best against them were those who didn't do much job on staying tight with City's fullbacks when defending, adding: "It's not like fullback can do too much even if you let him too much space", and that's coming from a man who used to be fullback.

He just needs an extended run in the team (something he never really got last season) and he'll be back to his best. Of course, that also depends on injuries, of which he's been getting quite a few lately.

tbf if its not gonna be nani then somebody needs to be doing what he can do which is provide width but also come inside either in general link up but also makind runs in the box. Both Valencia and young have shown they're not comfortable picking the ball up in a tight area and turning to take people on and without someone like scholes we can't quickly switch the play to them and do get them the ball to feet high in the opposition half, where they're one in one with their fullback. That happened all of last season and nothing has changed this season even if it is early days.

He needs to play every week. He also needs to rake his studs down the back of Ashley Young's legs in training every friday, just as he was about to be declared match fit for the weekend. Ashley Young ruled out with nasty gash. Nani starts. Goals.

Play him every week.

It's just not going to happen though, is it? for some reason Young and Valencia give off some vibe that allows them to start over players that are clearly more talented and offer more attacking-wise.

Good news. Now let's hope he can be considered top of the pecking order in terms of our wide attackers and play regularly. I hope he can stay injury free for the most part as well. He's got terrible luck with his hamstrings.

Nani signs new deal
Manchester United is delighted to announce that Nani has signed a new five year contract to June 2018.
The Portuguese winger signed for United in May 2007 and has won four Barclays Premier League titles, two League Cups, a FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Champions League in his six seasons at Old Trafford.
David Moyes said: "I'm really pleased Nani has re-signed for the next five years. He has great ability and experience beyond his 26 years. I've been impressed with his approach to training and look forward to working with him in the coming seasons."
Nani said: "Playing at United has been a fantastic experience for me. When I came to the Club, I never imagined the success we have enjoyed. Training every day with top players who want to win trophies every year is a great motivation to me. I'm very happy that the new manager has shown this faith in me and I'm looking forward to helping the team compete for more honours this season."

Excellent news. By next summer RM will wish they had signed him instead of monkey boy.

Frustrating, inconsistant, but I'd play him ahead of Young and Valencia every time.

Like a new signing really. He hardly kicked a ball last year.

Yes. Genuinely like a new signing considering how little he played last season!

 The thread title. Really good news, there will be plenty of games where he's a pain in the arse but he's always capable of magic.

I can see him having an absolute stormer of a season if he is started regularly and shown a little faith by the new gaffer.

For once, the 'like a new signing' claims are accurate. So happy that Moyes has shown him the faith he deserves.
