I don't know if anyone has listened to The Game podcast live from Manchester a few days ago, but James Ducker was on and on the subject of Nani they asked why he had been given a new contract and he said the indications were that it was done with preserving his value, that there were talks to let him go on loan during the window and he's very likely to go during the summer.

EDIT: Around 29 mins in.

i said that when the news about his contract broke out.

sorry it was in December

Yes, 5 year contract.

Has nothing to do with protecting the value of your playing assests....right?

We won't get any more money just by him signing new contract, if his gametime is at minimum again this season I don't see why would any club offer more money for him just because he signed new contract, I really don't see any point in that. And after all, there were reports that we refused few loan offers for him.

Nani must feel like a right mug signing that contract.

If it was just a case of protecting his value why offer him a 5 year deal? I think Moyes had plans for Nani which unfortunately have been interrupted due to injury.

Probably a case of both. Keeping him for a long time and protecting his value should he decide to leave.

I think it's relatively clear that players' command a higher transfer fee if they are under a long term contract. Once they are into the final year the price pretty much freefalls.

Does anyone know what's going on with his injury situation?

On the official website his name is never mentioned amongst the injured players in the match preview articles and they don't even do the "long term injured players x, are all out". Also when commentators speak about our injuries his name isn't mentioned by them either.

Can't wait for him to return and play. Even at his most frustrating worst, he's ten times the player Valencia and Young are these days. Unlike those two, he can do something other than just cross the ball.

Has he literally been injured all season? He's never had a season this bad in terms of injury. Or does Moyes simply not fancy him at all? If he doesn't it makes the contract renewal seem a bit strange, unless Moyes was hoping to squeeze a few pound out of him this summer. I have to say though, I suspect he's been horrifically mismanaged this season.

In what sense?

Unless he genuinely has been injured all this time I should mention, which could be the case. You could be excused for forgetting he exists this season. Maybe he hasn't been pulling his weight in training, that never seemed an issue with Ferguson though. If he has been genuinely injured all this time then fair enough, I never remember him having such a poor run of injuries, but it's almost as if he's been frozen out for large parts of the season.

It's been niggling hamstring injuries that have bothered him for a while. Maybe this time they want to make sure he's 100% and take no risks. Strange that he's not been mentioned at all though. I see people saying he's been awful this season, but it's pretty harsh when he's only started about 5 games due to injuries and not done that bad. Hope he can get fit soon.

I'm sure I heard/read that he was going to be out for another 4-5 weeks and that was a couple of weeks back.

Don't see it. Even when he was fit, he didn't see very much game time. Moyes talked about getting his confidence back then played him very little following that. The away win at Leverkusen where he wasn't all that but grabbed a goal, he sat on the bench in our following draw to Tottenham, followed by a loss to Everton...and then started and had a shocker versus Newcastle.

Which part is bollocks, exactly?

It doesn't actually say the reason he went to Italy was "rehabilitative care". Just that he went to Italy and that is "engaged in rehabilitative care". I'm sure he is. Whether or not he is travelling abroad. Why would we send him to Italy to do this? It's not something we've done for any other player before?

Might be easier to work out what the feck is going on if someone could translate the original article:

Anyone?

Google Translate says:

The Manchester United winger Nani has landed this morning in Bologna with one of the members of his entourage. The market is closed until June, but the situation on the Portuguese need to force things to be unraveled. In late January I have tried especially Milan and Juventus. In June, the talk will definitely open. Meanwhile, Nani, which then moves to Monza for matters of sponsors, discover Italy, where, however, is engaged in rehabilitative care

Nani arrived in Italy with a 'member of his entourage' but isn't there to speak to Serie A clubs, he's attending an event organised by a sponsor at Monza. That little detail hasn't stopped the Italian media from speculating and it can't be long before Inter Milan are thrown into the mix, they've been linked with Nani before and are reportedly interested in most of Europe's footballers at the moment. Most Italian clubs would find it hard to match the wages Nani currently earns, let alone piece together an attractive transfer fee.

Any news on when he's back?

He didnt train apparently.

Whether that means he's close to training, who knows.

I don't think he's in Moyes' plans to be honest.

If Moyes continues with the new 4-2-3-1 approach from Saturday he may try out Nani in the Mata/Januzaj role when they are not playing for whatever reason. My guess is that he won't, but Nani suits that formation more than a 4-4-2.

It's been eerily quiet concerning Nani for some time now. I think he can offer exactly what we need in attack. He has the pace and trickery to not only get past players, but also to run in behind them. With Janzuaj, Rooney, Mata and RVP, there isn't a lot of pace in attack. Navas certainly opened up the attack for City who also struggled with a too stagnate attack.

This has been a long injury lay-off, last time he played was mid-february and no sign of returning soon. It's annoying because he would have been a very useful winger in some of the games we've played without him. The game of a million crosses for example may have worked perfectly for him, as we know he is one of the best we have for long shots, and would have been a different option in that game. I hope when he gets back that Moyes puts him in more often, because our attack just has that extra weapon in stock when he plays.

I'm cool with that, give us Pogba and it's a done deal.

I'm sure I'm one of the few who think this still but I'd love to see Nani in this side. His pace, movement, and dribbling ability would add something different to our attack. I really can't see why we would let him go so soon after he signed a new contract. His injuries this season have been very unfortunate, I still think he has a lot to offer when fit.

I think we'd all love to see him in the side, we've persisted with Valencia and Young long enough.

I don't think you are. Out of all of our wide players, he is arguably the most exciting alongside Januzaj. It's very predictable play at the moment on the right hand side with Valencia, who only seems to get it right when Rafael is playing. Nani doesn't need him to play well, and although he can be incredibly inconsistent, he is still one of the few players we have who can completely change the game on his own.

An on form Nani would be devastating in the team. When he finally gets a game are we going to get that from him? Almost certainly not.

Given 5-6 games on the bounce maybe he could get some form. Is he going to get that? Almost certainly not.

Thanks.

I hope he is allowed to get some form, he's a great mixture of the flair of Mata/Kagawa and the hard work/pace of Young/Valencia.
