If that was an average game for Nani, it really shows the gulf in class between him and most of the other players on the pitch tonight, because he was probably our best player

Brilliant player. Comes back from injury and gets an assist then wins the game for us.

Been great for a majority of the season as well.

Him and Berba have stepped up a level.

Weird game from him. Thought his overall play was a let down. He still had an assist and goal though.

His mere presence transforms us as a team. We look less static and his ball-carrying ability is priceless.

Didn't think he was wasteful at all. Excellent game from him.

Read a thread on a Stoke forum earlier about Rooney being injured and so wouldn't be playing against Stoke. One of the posters replied and said that he was more worried about Nani than Rooney anyway.

Says a lot for the quality of Nani that.....and he showed it today with a winning goal and an assist.

Like I've said before, he's one of the most underrated players in the world. Complete forward.

I can't believe the debate they just had on Sky. Richard Keys asked John Collins if he was a Nani fan and Collins responded with the usual cliche that he's hit-and-miss and that he doesn't do it often enough. I'd put it out there that Nani has been the most productive player, overall, in the Premier League in this calendar year. According to stats I have, he has scored 6 and assisted 11 this season, whilst he scored 3 and assisted 10 last season (most of which came in the second part of the season)...

Best winger in the league.

Just another in a long line of examples of pundits not knowing what they are talking about and resorting to repeating myths. It's the first thing people always say about Nani, "he's inconsistent", it's nonsense and it's annoying to read/hear repeated all the damn time.

I've always like Nani and Anderson even way back when many were ripping into them for not being consistent etc. You could always see the quality in them, just need polishing.

Reckon Nani had a decent game tonight, really involved and you can't argue with a lovely goal and a tidy assist either. What's he on now in the PL, 11 assists, 6 goals? Basically he's owning Bale (don't get me wrong, Bales a top player), yet getting less attention it seems. Hope he keeps them coming for us.

Once again he came up with the goods for us. A goal and an assist, what more do you want?

Considering this was his first game in a while he looked pretty sharp to me. Just wait until he gets back to his high standards again. He's been our best player this season for sheer consistency and still the media are not recognising him along with the likes of Nasri and Bale.

It's more annoying when you consider they get paid for such insights. In fairness, Collins isn't a punditry regular and probably doesn't even keep on eye on things as much as the likes of Redknapp, Gray etc...

Another annoying thing is when people talk about our right back "weakness." People are still not seeing just how fecking good Rafael has become. He's the best right full back in the league - so frigging tenacious, it's untrue. And his boundless energy is being gilded with some fantastic skills. I await someone to suggest he's weak defensively - but there's been absolutely no indications of that this season.

In great football teams, you get little partnerships forged all over the field... the centre halves, the forwards etc, and so I think it's great that Nani and Rafael continue to improve at such a pace and they look more and more at ease with one another. They've got the capacity to rip sides to shreds!

It happened with Ronaldo, even well into 2006/7 in the case of some ABU pundits, but eventually they all accepted it

I think usually when people have said we have a weak spot in right back, I think they're saying that because up until Rafael stepped up, we didn't have a definite right back for a number of seasons. Now that Rafael has stepped up and looks to have claimed the RB spot for himself, it may not be seen as a weak spot.

Yea that one drives me mad; "Rafael's a very quick little player and he's good going forward but he's weak defensively". Ah, so you've not watched him for around 18 months? OK, I'll remember to ignore your wonderful insight!

Like you say, the fact these people are getting paid to talk about these things is annoying in the extreme.

For the record, Rafael also dovetails quite nicely with Tony V aswell. Options, options, options!

He really has everything, the full package. Plus its a huge bonus that he's so good with both feet

I don't normally like the comparisons with Ronaldo, but bloody hell, he's becoming frighteningly effective even when he's not at his best. Left or right wing, it won't matter when he has the sort of self-belief he does at the moment. In truth I always knew he had the potential to do this, but had doubts about him being able to do it consistently. On this season's form I was dead wrong.

Given how Nani exploded in the latter part of last season and is now doing it consistently for all of this season so far, there are definite parallels between Nani now and Ronaldo's 05-07 period. Nani needs to get a bit of a wriggle on in the goal stakes - see no reason why he can't hit, maybe, 15... Ronnie ended up with 23 in 06/07.

Often its Rafael forced inside when playing with Valencia. For me, it doesn't work as well.

No, not as well, but it has potential.

I quite like it when Rafael tears infield. He's a very good dribbler and shits up opposition teams when he starts running at the heart of them.

I agree with the hungry one. Also, Valencia has a knack of drawing defenders to the by-line and out of position, leaving Rafael wide open so that when the ball is laid back to him he has space to whip a cross in, something he is very good at.

Also not among the players to choose from in team of the year:
UEFA.com - Community - Team of the Year Adam Johnson got the nudge ahead of him, naturally...

I'm going to send Uefa my Nani MotM log.

That "goal or assist" productivity stat for Nani must be the best in the league, surely? I'm guessing he averages over one/game?

According to Fantasy PL, he's scored 6 and set up 11. Ridiculously productive. He's setting up or scoring a goal every game. You can't really ask more than that. Well actually, you can! He's shown an eye for goal - I reckon he can hit the net even more consistently though.

Thats very impressive, although Ronaldo and Messi are spoiling me. I'd like to see it compared with other players in the league though, but Nani must be top 5 at least, surely??

I think when he reaches his full potential, he'll score goals at a somewhat higher rate than he is now but in order for him to truly consistently find the back of the net, he'll have to play more centrally ala Ronaldo when he started scoring goals. I know it is a tiresome comparison but in order to become a 15+ goals-a-season player, you need to be scoring from tap-ins, headers, etc, which is not in Nani's game because he is a traditional winger - most of his goals come from cutting in or from the edge of the box. I don't think that SAF will ever mould him into a more central player like he did with Ronaldo, so Nani's assist tally will always overshadow his goal tally - which will probably remain at 10-15 goals a season (a wonderful return for a winger).

Goals + assists:

1. Drogba - 9 goals + 9 assists = 18
2. Nani - 6 goals + 11 assists = 17
3. Tevez - 12 goals + 5 assists = 17
4. Caroll - 11 goals + 6 assists = 17
5. Berbatov - 14 goals + 2 assists = 16

Only midfielder in the top 5 but listen to John Collins and he'll tell you he's inconsistent, read the papers and they tell you Nasri & Bale are better, log onto UEFA.com and you can vote Adam Johnson in the best team of the year but Nani is not even in the list

Expected as much for Nani to be around the top. Have to admit, i'm stunned Drogba and Caroll make the list though.

Strikers! Drogba's all came from that silly run at the start of the season, Carroll because everything and I mean EVERYTHING goes through him.
