If Nani knows he must be 1600 times more intelligent than I am.

That's numberwang!

No he hasn't. Wenger was asked the direct question during the course of 15-minute press conference and dealt with it quite amusingly (a muffled titter ran around the room). He usually handles press events in a fun way in contrast to Ferguson's sourly unpleasant efforts where junior reporters are scared to ask basic questions.

Are we feeling sorry for journalists now?

He usually handles press events in a fun way. It's like we're dealing with 6-year-old kids.

Yey, go Arsene, you're da bestest!

Even as light-hearted banter, Wenger's 'joke' was incredibly lame.

"1600 games as a manager; 1600 times more intelligent", WTF?

It may well have provoked a titter from the assorted hacks but a painfully unfunny wise-crack can do that sometimes. Nobody likes watching a bloke dying on his arse in awkward silence. Sometimes a polite pretence at laughter is the only way to end the cringing.

It was recognised as a shit joke by Wenger and everybody else - that's the point. It's a healthy work environment not the oppressive bully-boy stuff you get from Ferguson.

What are you basing this on? Have you ever watched a Sir Alex press conference in its entirety? I quite regularly watch these 15 minute press conferences (watched it today in fact on MUTV) from Sir Alex and what you've said in that last bit is an absolute load of rubbish. Even in the pre-CL final press conference for example, Sir Alex was cracking jokes and even started the whole press conference off with a joke.

I won't comment on what Wenger's like in his press conferences, for one because I don't care but also because as I haven't ever watched one fully or often enough, I wouldn't know. Now I really, really doubt that you are in a position to comment on Sir Alex. By the way, none of this is important or relevant, I'm not fussed what managers are like with journalists but still that shouldn't really allow for baseless, ignorant comments like the one you've made.

I don't think junior reporters deserve to get bullied for doing their job. I doubt you'd put up with that kind of shit in your working life.

I think it's sickening that journalists have to put with big, bad Mr. Ferguson. :(
What have they ever done to him? The big meany.

Wenger allows the junior hacks to bring their own balls of tumbleweed to his interviews. Top bloke.

Why does he have to be a cnut to people trying to do a job? It demeans him.

You make it sound as if, in every single press conference, he threatens the very lives of the journalists present. I've watched an abudance of his interviews to the press (as I'm sure most other United fans have) and, in the vast majority, he's very civilised.

If he's seen as being some sort of impatient, monstrous journalist basher, it's simply because the few occasions in which he is seen to be abrupt have been publicised or exaggerated due to his status in football.

All the SAF bullying thing apart which I'm out of the loop of...

You mean the people who only critizice other people for a living and get most offended when it comes back and hits them in the face?
Can't say I feel sorry for them. As a group they're not a likable bunch and hard to feel sorry for.

Shreeves is only the touchline guy for Sky, he's fairly junior not a topline presenter nor name journo.

The gory details of Shreevegate:

Ferguson: ‘fecking (inaudible) bastard.’

S: ‘Don't talk to me like that.’

F: ‘feck off to you.’

S: ‘Don't talk to me like that. Don't even think about it.’

F: ‘Don't you think about it, you cnut. feck off. Right?’

S: ‘Listen, are you going to do the interview in a professional manner or not? Do you want to do it or not?’

F: ‘You fecking be professional. You be professional. You're the one.’

S: ‘I'm entitled to ask. Cristiano gave the right answer.’

F: ‘fecking hell with your answers.’

S: ‘Don't talk to me like that. Go away. If you want to behave civilly, fine. Don't talk to me like that.’

F: ‘feck off.’ (door slams)

And Shreeves hasn't asked any awkward questions since...

No one's saying that bullying by people in powerful positions isn't effective.

Not on here no. But the man in the street would say Ferguson's being a right bully cnut.

Wenger studied gendai budō when he was in Japan, if the 4th official had let him go Pardew dead man (and Newcastle in much better shape).

Everyone knows of and remembers that outburst, that "transcript" will not come as a surprise to anyone. Sir Alex will defend his players when he thinks that journalists have gone over the line, as he's done several times before. On that occassion with Shreeves, I'd agree with you that Sir Alex went too far and shouldn't have said what he said in those words, shouldn't be using that language though again all of this was "off the record" and not at a press conference or in an interview etc.

But in your original post, you were talking about press conferences and said that Sir Alex is "sourly unpleasant" like you watch or read his press conferences week in, week out to know what you're talking about rather than just going on a few of these odd heated exchanges. You've failed to reply to my post too, I really don't think you've ever even watched one whole Sir Alex press conference and so are in no position to talk as though you know exactly how he always deals with the press regularly.

The last few excerpts I've seen there's definitely an intimidatory atmosphere (don't ask difficult questions or you'll get a Shreeves-style tirade pal). They make for uncomfortable viewing.

Remember when Wenger squared up to Jol? Not a fight he should be picking.
