London 2012 Olympic Competition

Also glad we are knocking the stuff out of Australia who just have 1 gold but 12 silvers. Quality.
It was quite amusing when they asked one of the rowers what he was going to do tomorrow: 'Oh... let me think... maybe buy a few stamps and send a few postcards down under'.

Olympic wrestling has started. It's always a shame The Rock and The Undertaker can not enter.

YouTube have got some serious software running on their servers - I just uploaded a clip of Mo Farah winning the 10k and it was instantly flagged and blocked.

Boxing is surely the most controversial sport? There are so many controversial decisions, overturning result next day and all. I think its ridiculous.

Compared to sprinting and short distance running? Where some of the greatest athletes have been found to be dopers. Remember that WADA estimate that they only catch 1 in 4 too.

Gutted for Annalise Murphy :( Fourth in the sailing, overtaken by Belgium right at the end.

So, everyone excited for the Iceland - GBR match that's about to start?? :D

Sits quite right with me as they were completely different scenarios as discussed. Of course the Algerian should not have been thrown at all. You have to put these matters into context.

Think this scenario is more comparable. He gives it a go, falls behind, gives up. Like Hindes did, only he got another shot at the same race, while the Algerian dude's next shot was in a different race. I suppose you can debate whether the Brit(s) did it on purpose, but assuming that Hindes at least did, then... But yeah, different sports and different rules perhaps, but then that is something that should probably be looked into, it's not right that one contestant gets thrown out for not giving his best while another one isn't. (And of course when the one let off performs for GB it makes it all the more controversial.)

Yeah he at least gave it a go. Didn't make it an outright sham and there were other people who were better than him in the race. That's also not including the extenuating factors of having run an Olympic record in the 1500m not so long ago. Not his fault his own country's committee let him down.

That's the one. I just read about it (B19 in this thread perhaps?) somewhere. Some seemed to question it, which is enough to call it a controversy. I'm not making any judgments about that one.

B19 seemed to be on a bitter pill over that one. Not sure why since the Danes won. Given the rower was actually waving his seat and they had made a good start till the seat was broken, I would argue there was nothing dodgy over it.

This cycling is a bit strange, the way they start really slow, watching each other.

Fair enough.

I don't mean to WUM, so no need for Brits on here to get defensive about it. The sports these things have happened in are sports I don't follow much, so I am genuinely looking for your views on something that for an outsider at first sight looks like differential treatment.

Iceland are embarrassing themselves against GB.

Meh. Hard to be in some sort of demolisher mindset for a game like this since it doesn't matter. We're letting the fringe players get minutes and resting our big guns. Their goalkeeper is on fire as well. I totally expected this to happen. We're still leading by 3 though, I expect it to be a 8-9 goal victory in the end.

Btw it's a bit disrespectful to talk about a team that just beat Sweden and France and secured 1st spot in the group like that, even if they lose this pointless game.

Fair play to GBR to giving us a game though.

We still have our best defenders playing and the defense is the one that's been very poor. That's a bit worrying imo. This kind of stuff can affect the players.

Umm, how does this weird slow, looking over the shoulder cycling work then?

Gold for Kenny!

Cycling is fantastic to watch, even if you have no idea whats going on

If you sprint from the start, the other guy just slipstreams you and then overtakes on the last corner when you're knackered.

Same reason they take turns being at the front in the team sprint events. You use 30% less energy slipstreaming and they can only really sprint for ~20 sec before lactic acid locks their legs up.

Why not just have a shorter distance sprint-only event?
