London 2012 Olympic Competition

Could be the case. But I value Wimbledon much much higher. Most of this tournament is in 3 sets as well. Not devaluing the achievement should either player win but a GS is what matters most IMO.

Me too. I think Federer probably knows that as well and partly agrees with you, but he would've been desperate to win this. That he won't if it keeps up like this may annoy him a little bit but I see what you mean.

Personally I'd like to see this held in a much higher regard, but it's difficult when so many other grand slams surround it.

Seeing as this comes round only once every 4 years, does it equate to 16 grand slam titles? Murray will only be one behind Fed then... :wenger:

Another break point, Murray is dominating this.

Murray is destroying Federer. Absolutely destroying him.

Another break! The winning line is kind of in sight.

I agree that generally Olympic tennis isn't held in too high a regard by the players. But I think playing in this competition has meant a huge amount to Murray. The furore of it being a home games and the amazing following that has gathered behind Team GB in the recent weeks, Murray seems to have really latched onto that and is playing some of the best tennis of his life. I think this one means a lot to him.

I think he is enjoying the atmosphere, more like Davis Cup. Also the British fans are all behind him, while Wimbledon fans have their favourites and weren't all behind him in the final.

I think the fact that it's Federer vs Murray helps the prestige of it as well. If it was Nadal-Djokovic it wouldn't be as important in a way because Nadal's won it before and Djokovic will be focused on the US Open which he's expected to win. Murray will want it though since it's in his homeland, while Federer is desperate to win it before he retires. Both players taking it seriously does help.

This might give Murray the confidence to beat the best players in a 5 setter in a grand slam. This will be huge for Andy and GB.

Great stuff from Andy.

It will be. It may not be a slam but the 5-set final would make it feel like one. This tennis from him has been incredible.

The players clearly do care about this- Del Potro was in tears of joy at winning the bronze!
The Williams sisters were going made too yesterday.

The top players all turn up for this, there is a lot of prestige for them to win and it is the fact they are representing their countries instead of their bank managers.

I think it's bigger than Davis Cup personally, for Murray anyway. Since Wimbledon, a lot of people have revised their opinion of him (about time in my view) and I think to have the backing he's got here, he seems genuinely moved by it.

To be fair... at the end of the day, you get an Olympic gold medal if you win. The same medal Ennis, or Farah, or Bolt get when they win... so its obviously going to be a big deal for those taking part. It's not a GS, but its something that has its importance in a different way.

I think he is moved. It annoyed me when you got fans shouting for Federer at Wimbledon. I will always want a GB player to win. The poor lad made a joke and some people have not got a sense of humour. It's sad.

I doubt it will. You aren't a truly great player until you win Grand Slam(s). Which I think he will in the next year or two.

He must confidence if he wins given who he has beaten. Could he be a borderline great if he wins this and no slam?

That was probably his worst game of the match. Hold it together now man!

Especially when Henman and the journalist involved in the background to the joke explained what it was all about, a lot of people still didn't give him the benefit of the doubt it was a joke.

Wow, silver and a bronze in the pommel horse- they keep on coming from all angles.

No, not really. The Olympics, while brilliant in its own right, is a postscript when describing what a player has won. It's winning this at home that will make this really special.

Ahhh feel sorry for Louis Smith, lost by a whisker, but a silver and bronze still very good from our pommel horse contenders.

He does generally have a fairly dour demeanour which a lot of people cannot warm too- although tbf he does seem to have made a bit of an effort on that front.

Fantastic serving from him! Nearly there.

Yeah, that pretty much nails it.

It might also mean he gets the support he deserves. We are great here in England( I am saying England as we are by far the worst)at trying to destroy any talented sportsmen we have.
