Liverpool : General discussion

How could you forget Firmino? Felt like he was scoring every week at one point.

Didn't forget him - Just didn't he'd scored more than 5 in the league since 2016.

Here's United's pitiful scorers list over the same period (PL only)

Rooney - 5
Martial - 4
Lingard - 3
Rashford - 3
Herrera - 1
Mata - 1

Thats pretty depressing really.

Rooney gets a lot of stick but hes still around the top of our scoring charts despite being in dire form or injured for the vast majority of the season.
Were asking a lot of Martial, Lingaard and Rashford to turn them numbers into something that'll get us within a mile of the title next season
Have to blame the management really imo.
Fellaini would normally have a dozen or so goals by now for a mediocre everton side. Same with mata. Hererra was closer to 10 or so last season.
Our defence isn't even great at this stage.

Henderson's injury a blessing? I've never rated him and have even said that Shelvey is and was the better player.
Fair enough to not really rate Henderson but the Shelvey comparison is just wrong. Shelvey can stick it in the top bin from 30 yards every now and again but the truth is he's tactically nowhere near Henderson's level nor does he share the work rate or general fantastic attitude that Henderson has. Shelvey is a purple patch player, which is why he left Liverpool and now finds himself at a club looking at relegation. His levels of concentration are appalling for a top-flight player and reports were that he was just a loon off the pitch.

Cannot wait for tomorrow evening's game. Absolutely no idea who'll be starting up top.. I'd stick with Origi (for his work ethic and current form) but Sturridge looked class on the weekend and Firmino is fully fit too.

I've got a feeling we'll be going with two up top. Possibly Firmino on the bench. Allen should start I think.

From zero options (ie Benteke) to so many forwards. Even Lallana to a lesser extent. The boom bubble starts here. :)

Even we should have a chance of getting 3-4 goals against Villa in a few weeks time

I think we'll line up:

Mignolet; Clyne, Lovren, Sakho, Moreno; Milner, Can, Allen, Coutinho; Origi, Sturridge

Maybe swap Milner for Lallana and Firmino for Sturridge as the possible alternatives. No doubt Dortmund will feel like they have a point to prove after a poor performance last week.

Think Liverpool will win. Very disappointed with what I saw from Dortmund last week.

Dortmund didn't turn up last week. If Liverpool manage to get through they have a fantastic chance to win the Europa, and I'll be gutted they'd be in the champions league and we aren't!

Edit - say Liverpool do win it and finish outside the top 4. Would that mean fourth place in England wouldn't get CL?

I thought so, yes!

No. If Liverpool win the EL and finish outside of the top four then England will have five teams in the CL next year, however if Liverpool and City win both the EL and CL then the fourth placed team would miss out as no nation is allowed more than five teams in the CL.

We're not winning the EL, don't worry.
You're not finishing fourth, either.

More or less likely than Leicester winning the league? Of course it's very possible - it's a cup and Liverpool are playing some good stuff in this tournament.

Liverpool could very well win the Europa League. Without meaning disrespect, Klopp has them playing like a cup specialist side - great on their day but consistently inconsistent.

Hope Dortmund smash them in Anfield tonight.

Kagawa has a chance to do something right in England tonight. Frustrating little man, there was def talent there.

 We've no chance, PickledRed. No chance.

Thank you Tommy! :D

Loved reading the match thread. Origi looking to be the player I thought he could become years ago. Shame I can't find that thread with everyone on here criticizing him re. the French FA voting him the 'worst player in all of France's four leagues' when he was at Lille. Seriously shit hot player now he's got some self-confidence.

Watch us lose to Bournemouth now. It's such a Liverpool thing to do.

Meh, I don't think it's that important now. We need to just use the league games to manage fitness of the players ahead of the semi final legs.

Yeah true. I hope Can is ok. He was limping at the end and I think he's become quite important for us now. Couldn't do anything defensively tonight though. Dortmund ran him ragged.

What if City win the CL and Liverpool don't win the EL? Kinda like Chelsea few years back when Spurs missed out on a CL spot.

Nah in that scenario United could finish fourth and be in the Champions League still. UEFA allow up to five teams from any one country in the CL per season.

Cheers! I just remember Spurs missing out on the CL because Chelsea won it. But I also remember Everton qualifying despite Liverpool winning it. Am I remembering things wrong or have the rules changed.

Rules have changed.

No both of those things happened. I think UEFA bent the rules a bit for us in 2005 and we had to go through three qualifying rounds, but the rules during the 2011-12 season meant that Chelsea winning it led to them taking the fourth Champions League place regardless of who finished there in the league.

Yea that makes sense. Thanks!

Clearly a team moving in the right direction, next seasons top 4 is going to be a dog fight especially as I fully expect West Ham to spend big this summer.

City
Utd
Arsenal
Spurs
Chelsea
Liverpool
West Ham

Perm any 4 from 7, next season will be the toughest PL ever.

Gutted. If it's only four weeks then should we make the Europa League final then would he make that?

Yeah, just about. Would be shocked to see him start it though - would be madness to throw him straight back in with no match preparation, especially in a final.

All assuming we get there ;)

Back for Euros?

In terms of fitness...yeah should be fit in time. Don't follow Germany closely enough to know if the injury will cost him a place (was he a sure pick for the squad before?)

It's a massive blow, I know people on here seem to think he's crap and lump him in with Sakho in the "players Liverpool fans overrate" group but he's been really impressive for us under Klopp. Nailed on starter next season and rightly so.

Germany play him at RB, I hope he doesn't go to the Euro's personally.
