Liverpool 2024-25 | Inevitably winning a..."treble"

I think Nerwcastle will be incredibly up for the final and they press like demons. Asa long as they don't suddenly lose Isak, Guimeres and Gordon in a freak yachting accident in the week of the final.... becaue that would be a very typical thing that seems to happen when Liverpool might be facing a tough game.

Another final. Just cancel it and give them the trophy.

It's weird. Even after all this time I've still no clue how they're so bloody good aside from Salah. I mean they're probably the best team in Europe but I still can't really believe it and think it's partially just a freak occurrence and waiting for the wheels to fly off. Especially after Klopp leaving it's just been surreal, their form. Never felt that with any other club ever.

This is exactly how I feel.

It is uncanny.

Last year they played really well.

Most of the team didn't change.

The ones from last year already having a great level, continued doing it great and many that were struggling a bit or a lot, enhaced their level.

Slot brought a more calm approach, pragmatic approach at times, that saves legs too and having more players in form, gives him the possibility to rotate a lot more. For instance this last game, he started without some starters, later Pool never lost their rythim becasue by the 60/70 minutes mark, they started making substitutions and those instantly cliked.

PD: The prior season they paid a price for many games at the end of the season, hitting a low form in the most vital segment of the season. Also loosing agaisnt United in those days kind of pushed the first piece of the domino. When they started to get their form back, it was already too late.

Best keeper and center back in the world helps. Konate is probably world class too. TAA gets a lot of criticism but he's still a unique footballer from his position, even if this isn't one of his best seasons.

I get it though. I think it's mainly because our midfield is actually exceptional but they haven't yet developed the reputation to reflect the level they are playing at this season. There's a discrepancy between their stature and performance levels. If they keep this up for a few seasons, it won't look that weird in hindsight though.

Gravenberch and MacAllister are playing to world class levels this season, or near to it at rate. And Szoboslai is a really good midfielder with potential to play at a similar level. But it's only really MacAllister who has a large enough body of work to merit such a claim.

I mean objectively speaking Alisson and Van Dijk are among the best in their position in Europe. TAA is a very good player and having an excellent season. Salah is as you say still in the top bracket.

Then you have good players like Mac Allister, Diaz, Gakpo, Jota, Konate and improved performers in Szobozslai & Gravenberch. Squad players contributing like Elliott, Jones, Tsimikas.

I think if we'd had to over-rely on Jones or Elliott, we might've struggled. I can't overstate how important our midfield three of Szobozslai, Mac Allister and Gravenberch is. A lot of legs in there and we're a worse team when one of them is missing (more so Szoboslai & Gravenberch).

Midfield is such an important foundation for any team wanting to be successful. Look at City without Rodri. If Arsenal lost Partey and/or Rice they would feel it. Klopp's 22/23 season is another example where legs went. It was so important that we bought four midfielders in 2023.

Slot knows that too.

I disagree.
The brains of this team is Macca and by faaaar, no matter what primarly task and role he was given in a certain match.
Even if Gravs has improved a lot and Slobo it's in a very good level. People gets fascinated with dinamics, yet the one that gets everyone ticking that makes Pool actually having the control Slot wants, to actually sometimes enter a "boring zone" it's the ginger, Klopp went fro that and go it, "Slot knows that too".

Aside from your assessment ignoring a few players who are obviously really good, it does more broadly highlight the way football has tipped too much towards individual players. Transfer obsession and people hyping some footballers ignores the value of a settled squad who are developed and well-coached. We see combined XIs and lads saying things like “my starboy is clear” which just endorses the idea that it’s all about filling your squad with names.

Slot has taken a well-assembled squad and coached them excellently with each player knowing their role.

I don't care, your situation is weird. Nobody expected Slott to do what he's done this season, the consistency has been freakish. Let's see what happens when Salah leaves in the summer.

Nobody expected Slot to be this good, agreed. But calling it weird? Just a very good manager who most weren’t really aware of. Not supernatural just impressive.

Their main instigator for pressing/attack is definitely Szoboszlai.
You will often see him the furthest forward, ahead to even Nuñez/Jota, telling everyone around him where and when to press.
Slot even persisted with him when he was off form and lacking confidence.
Coincidentally, their wobble this season happened when he's absent.
He's playing Firmino's role but from no.10 position, giving them an extra man on the edge of opponent's box, which in turns reducing marking on Salah.

Alexis is better at threading ball through congested space but he's not the brain of their operation, at least not now under Slot.
Other aspect of Alexis' game is the understated aggression and cunning; he doesn't hesitate to foul when he sense dangerous break.

Gravenberch is being utilised as the main outlet to relieve pressure when the have the ball.
His signature turn combined his long reach is really useful and he can carry the ball really well if opportunity present itself.

This midfield trio is arguably one of the best in Europe now.
Man-for-man, Camavinga/Valverde/Bellingham looks better on paper but as collective? Not really.

They seem to be set to win EPL, indeed.

As for the rest - I would love to see Barca beat them in UCL and [ideally] us knocking them out of FA Cup

Couldn't care less if they win Carabao Cup

Agreeing in the majority of aspects of their tasks, yet not with the view of what means to be the brain of the team, specially in big games. Let's agree to disagree to not derrail the thread.

I feel the single biggest turning point in Liverpool's history was the sale of Countinho in 2018 for an insane fee that funded their turnaround. It is hardly ever mentioned. Klopp and everything else followed that.

Barca were their saviours. Liverpool was already beginning to look decent with Countinho et al, but they've been crazy good after that sale and peri-Covid acquisitions.

Easy cup draws are helping them to rest players and even their difficult fixtures are working in their favour with City playing Real, few days before them play Liverpool.

The FA Cup draws have been kind so far. In the Carabao Cup we’ve played West Ham, Brighton & Southampton away and Spurs. All PL ties (I’m being generous to Southampton).

We’re also playing Villa away now on the same evening City play away in Madrid.

Newcastle could nick the league cup final. Plymouth are close to pulling a big upset.
UCL is still too early to call.

From a so called quadruple to possibly only winning the Prem.

Still a long way to go but let’s see.

I wonder what the average extra time amounts are for them from a winning and losing position.
Curious.
