Liverpool - 2017/18

Really happy so far with this season and the job Klopp's doing. Even if we don't get past Roma, a CL semi-final and looking like 3rd place in the league is definite progress. We haven't qualified for the CL twice in a row since 2009 and 2010.

1) Man City 13/8,
2) Liverpool 6/1,
3) United 8/2.

That's odds checker, though nearly all have us as 2nd favourites. Not that it means much, as you say Randy, lots can happen in the summer. Could change the whole complexion.

Honestly have no idea what basis the bookies are using to come to that conclusion, but they're welcome to their opinion.

And please don't call me Randy, it's far too 'suggestive'

I don't think it is a large gap between us three, it's definitely closed since the opening couple of months. They just got a long way ahead and then maintained it. Us, yourselves and Spurs have all been incredibly consistent for a good few months now.

I think City's recent defeats have skewed your opinion somewhat. City are still streets ahead of the chasing pack and if we ever hope to close that gap, significant improvements in current playing personnel and some worthwhile transfer market purchases are sorely needed. Don't doubt it for a second

Despite there recent dip in form, City will end up winning the league by a large distance.

Haha, okay, no more 'Randy' (I do like it though' (ooh' er' madam). .
Yeah, maybe you're right mate, I was looking more at how close yourselves, us and Spurs, have been, results wise/ points wise, over the last 4/5 months.

The question you correctly allude to, is whether we can all keep that up over a whole season the way City have.
With significant improvements, who knows? Though even then, they won't stand still themselves.

Surely you lot will splash the cash. Is there any idea on how much Mourinho will be allotted yet?

If they can keep every player and buy a CB + a quality backup for their front three + Keita coming in, they should be able to challenge for the title.

Need another midfielder & a keeper for me.

I think Chelsea are going to be a threat again next season. I expect them to get a new manager, a few good signings, and their belief will be back like that... Then the season after they'll finish 6th again.

Could potentially be a 5 horse race next season. Expecting bigger improvements from United/Liverpool/Spurs/Chelsea than I am from City.

No idea to be honest, somewhere between 200-250 million I guess. A new LB is a certainty, along with another CM plus a right winger. Argument could be made for a new RB although I'd be happy to stay with Valencia for one more season.

What about Liverpool?

I'm not sure, last year we had quite a large budget (for us) because we'd hardly spent over the previous couple of windows. This year, the owners and Klopp have stated that all the Coutinho money will go in the kitty, but whether they anticipated that with the huge Van Dijk purchase is anyone's guess. Even if that was the case, there'd still be 70m, plus the 30-40m FSG usually throw in and then the CL and TV money.

I'd be surprised if it wasn't north of £150 plus any outgoings. The reliable journo's reckon the Van Dijk cash was from last years budget, so it could be a decent lump this time.

I know a lot would like a new CB to partner VvD, but I'd like to see Joe Gomez get the nod, we're pretty well stocked at RB with Trent and Clyne so I think that may be the plan.

For me, the priorities are a playmaker, we've been strongly linked with Jorginho (tho' I think he'll be in demand), a back up striker for Firmino, or a wide forward like Draxler. The good thing about our front three is that they can all play centrally, so a central striker doesn't have to be essential.

Although it's always preferable to have an upgrade, I wouldn't be unhappy if we kept' faith with Karius in goal. He may make the odd flap, but he really suits our way of play.

Just saw that link with Harry Maguire, I really like him. Could make a great partnership with Baiily (not sure if they play on right or left, though I'd imagine players of that quality would be adaptable). Could be the end for Mike in that case. Shame, I always found him as quite a well-spoken, likeable, United player. Underrated by a lot of your lot too.

What with the new stadium will Spurs have much money to spend?

Haven't seen him play often enough to pass judgement on his abilty, but from what I have seen he doesn't appear to be much of an upgrade on what we already have.

This isn't the transfer forum, the mods tend to get antsy about unrelated content appearing in the wrong thread. Best to draw a line here mate.

That said, Maguire seems more like a Liverpool signing than a United one.

It's a nice vid. Klopp has a good tone of voice btw.
And I can hardly imagine creating something worse than the City one.

I still think both Lovren are Karius are weak links. Lukaku dominated Lovren recently and Karius still looks very flappable such as against Palace the other week when they nearly beat you.

You're certainly in good shape mind but still plenty of work to do.

Karius is a very good goalie, I had hoped we'd go for him that summer he went to Liverpool, I then hoped that he'd leave Liverpool this summer and we'd go for him then too! But it would seem, that Kloppo has done the right thing, and finally dumped Mignolet, he is such a patient coach! Can't believe he waited so long, Mignolet is a terrible goalie.

But honestly, Karius is very good, I was surprised how quickly so many fans gave up on him last season, not surprised the media did, the media love turning on players. It was difficult for him for sure, he lost confidence, and then was taken out of the team, probably right decision at that time. But now he knows he is number 1, he is fine.

I think if Liverpool stick with him next season he'll be really good for them, he has still plenty of room to improve of course, but he has all the talent. And his style is perfect for how Kloppo has his teams playing. And it's not easy to find goalies like this. He is worth sticking with.

Lovren I agree with - again, he has been show a lot of patience. Sometimes he looks great, but when he makes mistakes - which he does too much, his mind goes.

I thought it was sentimental tat & turned it off about half way through honestly :nervous: Better than the City one, but that's not really hard... Barely made it 20s through that one.

For the first time for many years I actually feel like next season could be 'their year'.
I doubt we will be in a position to stop them so it may be up to City to stop it happening.

I know we football fans all have high expectations of some of the talent that come through the ranks. You know the stuff, he's the next Ryan Giggs, Steven Gerrard etc. Sadly though, very few live up to the hype. But whilst everyone will be clambering aboard the transfer muppetry train this summer, we at Liverpool might have a young lad in Harry Wilson who could catch the eye next season. Scored a beauty for wales against China on his debut, & on his 21st birthday, quite recently. But his biggest impact has come via his loan spell at Hull City where he was loaned out in January of this year. 7 goals in 9 starts & 3 assists have helped Hull climb from potential relegation candidates to safety. MOTM again in yesterdays 5-5 draw at Bristol City. This is from the Hull Daily Mail's match ratings:

Harry Wilson: If only these are the final weeks of his City career. Opened the scoring with another stunner before surpassing that with a decisive free-kick that made it 4-3. Seven goals in nine starts shows he’s destined for a higher stage. 9

There's been a lot of good lads who've gone out on loan from Anfield & have subsequently failed to shine. Wilson has bucked that trend. Be interesting to see what Klopp does with him next season. Could be a really good option for us on the bench I imagine.

Saw this in the Chelsea thread and thought you'd gone wrong somewhere!

Yes, like the look of Wilson. Certainly made the most of his loan opportunity. Being a goalscoring left footer who likes cutting in from a starting position on the right wing, he seems like he could be a decent understudy for Salah next season, whilst also getting enough games maybe on the left wing as well at times to keep aiding his development.

As a fellow Welshman I doubly hope he makes it with us, but at worst he should go on to have a solid career somewhere.

I'm not a fan of such collars on football kits, including United's current kit. I think Chelsea's current kit is the best, simplistic in a good way.

Just saw that Salah's goal contributions (40) account for 50% of Liverpool's premier league goals this season.. surely they can't be that far off of being considered a one man team?

Speaking strictly from a goalscoring perspective there are players with similar contributions to Salah (scored 39% of Pools goals). Messi and Kane have over 35% goal contributions and if you include assists then obviously you'll have that percentage increase.

Non of Klopps teams can be considered a one man team because he doesn't build his team's like that. Right now Salah is getting the goals because Klopp has built the system to get the best out of him, that means the other attackers, Firmino especially, sacrificing their position so Salah can flourish. If Salah does get injured then it will be a blow equivalent to any team losing their best striker but it doesn't mean 50% of Liverpool's goals will dry up. Klopp's flexible system can change so that other players can become more involved. People also thought Liverpools performances would get worse without Coutinho but they maybe have even improved.

It was the same at Dortmund where even if a major player was out you wouldn't see a huge change in the performances because his success is based more on his system than the individuals in it.

I get what you're saying however if the system truly is that flexible than how come it always just happens to be Salah getting the contribution, I'm not taking anything away from him he's put in some great performances, however to say that anyone could replace his impact just isn't true. While Klopp may have a good system for team play, none of their other players have shown that they could do what Salah does. That's why i think they aren't far off being considered a one man team.

Good post hasan. Though no one can replace a record breaker/make like Salah, another perfect example would be Coutinho. Ox has come in and been almost as influential as Phil, specially in the big games.

c'mon now you can't be serious

I'm probably the only person who's ever thought Karius was any good. Mind you I was set on Allison when I thought Mignolet was set to be no1 for years to come * shudders *

I'm with you. I actually like Roma's kit this season. Might buy one.

Hopefully Sean Cox makes a speedy recovery.
Media was baying for blood after we shattered a bus window. Many here screaming kick us out of Europe ( hyperbolic I know) But that all pales in comparison to someone losing their life potentially. Let's hope this gets the coverage it deserves.

Here here. Football is fecking irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, and this guy may very well lose his life because of thuggery outside a stadium. Sickening.

Interesting that the moral outragers seem to have disappeared on this one.

Here's hoping for a swift, full recovery. What a bunch of cnuts those Roma fans are.

Exactly! No matter how fierce the rivalry is, no human should have to go through this because of football. Here's hoping for a speedy recovery for Sean .

I personally would also like to see Ben Woodburn get some game time. Or at least be in a similar loan scenario where he's getting some game time.

Gomez should get a go at CB. I think Moreno will leave, although Klopp may keep him as a backup option (shrugs).

Karius is decent. We could do with an upgrade, but it will cost us an arm and a leg. As others have mentioned, he suits well to our system. I'd like to see more faith in him, unless we are going for the likes of Oblak, which in reality we won't.

How does Karius suit your system? poor keeping to go with poor defending?
