Liverpool 2016/17 - Performance and chat thread.

Meet our new starting LB :

Liverpool fans kicked off the summer crying out for a left back, and with just days left in the transfer window, many still are. According to anyone and everyone with connections at the club, though, manager Jürgen Klopp doesn’t want a new starting left back.

He doesn’t want a new starting left back because he’s been impressed by James Milner,
who Klopp moved to left back during pre-season in part to fill a need but also in order to ensure he could keep one of his hardest working players on the pitch this season.

“It is different,” the 30-year-old Milner, who recently retired from international football, admitted in an interview with the Liverpool Echo today. “There are pluses and minutes. All my career, being in the midfield or higher up than that, you have got people behind you.

‘You are working in pairs when you play further up but you are more of a unit when you are playing at left back. You need to be aware of where your centre backs are so you are not the deepest man, all these things. It’s new for me and I’m learning as fast as I can.”

There have been bright spots as he’s learned; moments of promise for a player making an unusual positional switch late in his career. In pre-season, he was one of the best players on the pitch against Barcelona, a constant threat checking back onto his right foot.

Against Burnley in the league, though, Milner at left back meant Liverpool lacked width on his side; against a team packed deep all his presence did was congest things further for Liverpool. Rather than opening Burnley up, his presence helped them shut down.

Klopp, though, feels confident that Milner will improve quickly at the position and any negatives from playing a right-footed left back can be overcome. And for his part,Milner says that despite being right-footed, he’s more comfortable playing on the left.

“I think I have adapted throughout my career to playing different positions,” Milner added when asked about his footedness. “I’ve played a lot on the left in my career and would rather play left back than right back so that does not affect me.

“It’s more learning the position from training and watching videos after the game, looking at distances from the centre half, getting out to the wide man quickly, things like that. The way the manager plays is very different to a left-back say five years ago. “A lot of time in this team you are like a winger and on the front foot.

So I could speak to other left backs but the way this manager wants his full-backs to play is completely different to how other managers want them to play.”

OK, I'm convinced, it was definitely a stonewall 110% penalty & LFC should have won 3-0 or 3-1, :D

But didn't we know that anyway?

Yeah not really wanting to get into this again but I can understand him wanting to go with the way those two cnuts were running the club. I only disagree with the way he went.

And the fact he went to fecking chelsea.

Suarez, fling the summer before notwithstanding, at least left the league.

Liverpool lose behind-closed-doors friendly to Huddersfield as Firmino, Milner and Ings feature

The senior squad members, left behind by their countries, were shown up in a friendly against the Championship side

A Liverpool side with seven first-team players lost in a behind-closed-doors friendly with Huddersfield on Friday.

Looking to keep his stars fresh ahead of their clash with Leicester next Saturday, Jurgen Klopp named a number of squad members left behind by their countries for the international break.

The fixture, held at Liverpool's Melwood training complex, featured James Milner, Joel Matip, Lucas Leiva, Alberto Moreno, Roberto Firmino and Danny Ings.

Firmino starred for Liverpool, but it was youngster Ovie Ejaria who scored their only goal as they fell to a 2-1 defeat.

New goalkeeper Loris Karius was not ready for a return, however.

Prime Torres was not human. The only forward in the 20 years I've been watching football that I legitimately feared my team going up against.

Training session with some boss views of the new stand. According to the Times and the Express a planning application for redeveloping the Anfield Road End has already been approved, adding an additional 6,000 seats. Word is this will start soon. I think that will take capacity to 60k+.

Karius back in full training, not long before he's ready to replace Mignolet !

That probably rules out the possibility of FSG selling the club. I doubt they'd be willing to invest so much into redeveloping the stadium if they wanted to sell.

Annie Rd to be completed by this time next year according to some guy on the radio (pinch of salt).

Atmosphere on Saturday should be good. Hope Leicester don't choke.

Looking forward to seeing it today, my seat is opposite. Just need to extend the Anfield Road end now.
The old Main Stand was just over 72ft tall, the new one is 182ft making it one of the largest in Europe.
With plans for a £260m much needed development over the area there will be new shops, a hotel, new houses, office space & landscaping.

Beginning to think this new stand must have its' own dedicated Promotional Team & Press Officer.

Is anyone else finding this new stand talk from Klopp and the pundits bizarre and hilarious at the same time? Klopp wants the players to channel the energy of the new stand. Jesus. Painful club.

To be honest, Anfield looks like an 80s VHS player that was trying a bit too hard to look cool.

More revenue, though... Can't moan.

It does look like that.

I like it for not being one of those ''same all the way around'' Bowl affairs, that could be anywhere.

yep it is definitely a bit skew whiff.

Took a bit of time to get used to the new camera angle, but I actually think its better. Good start to our home campaign - some great goals to enjoy.

Classy performance against the champions. Really happy after that, I see us doing the same to that mob from W. London on Friday.

I really hope Chelsea come at us - they should do considering they're at home. If they do we will have a good chance of taking all 3 points. If they sit back we will most likely struggle to break them down

I don't see them sitting back at home against us. They'll fancy their chances against us but I think them having that mentality could play into our hands. Put it like this, I can't see that Chelsea defence keeping out Sturridge, Mane, Firmino and Coutinho if we play the way we did today. All things considered, very decent start to the season.

I think if they get everyone fit and firing they'll have the best attack in the league. Thankfully, if that is the case, we can still rely on their defence to do their bit for the good of the world.

Really? What about Ruud, Henry, van Persie, Suarez, Ronaldo, Aguero, Rooney, etc?

Excellent team performance. Whenever we win well people always say it's 'because the opposition didn't play well', so this time let's give credit where it's due, Leicester didn't play well because we didn't let them.

Mignolet - 7 - he's really stepped up his game since Karius' arrival and he's not really let us down in any match this season.

Clyne - 6.5 - still doesn't look himself but this was much better.

Matip - 7.5 - clearly our best CB, calm, collected and almost always in control.

Lucas - 7 - that would have been 8 but for the brainfart because otherwise he had a damn good game.

Milner - 7 - covered Mahrez with aplomb and was always available and dangerous going forward.

Henderson - 8 - this is the Hendo of old, covered every blade of grass, good in possession and in covering and some excellent forward passing.

Wijnaldum - 6 - he looked better when Klopp had a word and pushed him forward, even getting an assist. However he still looks like a 'Plain Jane', I'm sure however that there's much more to come.

Lallana - 8 - the more I see of him playing centrally and deeper, the better he looks. His great feet enable him to keep the ball under pressure and with everything happening ahead of him he can look up and pick the right pass. He might not be the world's best tackler but his stamina and running enable him to harass and force the opposition to play.

Firmino - 8.5 - A superb cameo of everything he is good at. Great feet, keeping possession, playing others in, keeping calm under pressure and playmaking around the opposition box.

Mane - 8.5 - another great game; pace, defending back, another goal, another assist. He suits us perfectly and he already looks like he has a brilliant rapport with both Sturridge and especially Firmino.

Sturridge - 7.5 - he may not have scored but this was a superb team performance from him, constantly looking for, linking and finding his teammates and an assist. Should have scored though, two great chances, so loses a point for those misses.

Liverpool only show up against the big teams therefore Leicester are a big team. They'll thrash Chelsea on Friday.

... and who is their manager again ?

Thats why I said "hope" - with Conte in charge they might well sit back. Provided the opposition has a strong defence (and they do) its the best way to play against us. I fancy us against almost any team in the league if they come at us - but we still struggle with the proverbial parked bus.

They're good on their day, but they'll have enough bad days to see them fall well short once again, it's City and Chelsea that we need to worry about.

You also need to worry about Rooney failing to live with the quality around him.

At the moment it doesn't look like City and Chelsea have you to worry about.

Ohh, some braveur and chest thumping from our scouse contingent again today. Can't wait for reality to strike again against the likes of Crystal Palace, M'boro and Sunderland.

Our results against those teams is not at all relevant to what I just said.

I want to see us perform like we did today against the likes of Swansea, Palace, West Brom etc. When we figure out how to do that I think we'll be a decent shout for top four.

We'll miss Mane and Matip when they go to the ACON in January.

You made a comment that insinuated that we won't be in the title race with the two other most likely contenders. I made a post regarding why you won't be either. You fail in the bread and butter matches, and do game raising in other occations.

I think Matip is out of favour with Cameroon at the moment - can't remember why, but there is doubt as to whether he will play at the ACN.

Fingers crossed that he does a Lovren and alienates the manager before the tournament.
