Not concerned about his height

Barcelona did alright with Macherano at CB, who was shorter

And in case anyone says he'll be bullied by Haaland and co, Martinez faced Haaland a few months ago and won 4-0

I'm looking forward to seeing the likes of Ivan Toney bully him.

Only kidding, I've never seen this Martinez fella play so I have no idea how good he is.

Think it comes from the train of thought that its not the personel at CB though, and more the poor fullbacks, lack of a DM and GK that isn't commanding.

I think that theory carries water tbf, and that Maguire and Varane should be a good pairing. That being said though, everyone beneath them aren't good enough so I'd agree we need another.
I don’t buy into the theories that it’s everyone else’s fault all the time. The individual mistakes made were the type you’d see on a Sunday league pitch. It comes from there being no competition and no consequences, and lack of proper coaching

I just think we are limiting ourselves by relying on EtH for our targets rather than the scouts, especially with this signing. The fact that we defaulted to Martinez after it became obvious Timber wasn’t coming is a bit mad. We should have a broader range of targets but it seems our scouting department is still a mess. So the answer is getting the second best option at Ajax ? That shouldn’t fill anyone with confidence. It’s farcical really.

This is true in many ways, but we don't have a scouting department due to the fact that the club is horrendously badly run, and Ten Hag knows the player already, so it makes sense that we rely on our own manager who knows what he needs.

Martinez was Ajax's player of the year. ten Hag is clearly a big fan of both players. I wouldn't be surprised if we move for Timber next year.

Maybe ETH wanted something different for his midfield in Holland, but in England Martinez's mixture of aggression + on ball quality could be ideal.

I don't know how well he reads the game, but could he become our Fernandinho?

Having him as the quarterback allowing FDJ to drive forwards with the ball could work wonders. We still have the height of Varane/Maguire to defend.

I hope we are much more creative than that come this time next year.

Very overloaded with centre backs if he does come in and no sign of any of them moving on. How many will go on tour?

No one think he be used for CDM if we do bring him in?

I hope he can play very well there as it is a position we are so weak

Yes I have that sneaky suspicion that he is earmarked for a Midfield role.

Apparently when signed for Ajax, Ten Hag saw him as taking up a MF role.
‘At the beginning of the (2019-20) season, we were looking for a brain for central midfield,’ Ten Hag said in an interview in 2020.
‘We knew Martinez had played there but could he do it in Ajax’s system? We tried him there and we saw good things.’

But circumstances saw him given an opportunity at CB, and he cemented his place in that role, with Ajax being well stocked in MF anyway.

Imagine if we did actually sign de Jong, the partnership at the base of Midfield of Martinez & De Jong, both being well versed on Ten Hag's style and demands, and what an upgrade on McFred...!!

See that's the thing, Ten Hag had Ajax playing and performing the same way against European heavyweights throughout his time at Ajax. Against Madrid, Juve, Bayern, Chelsea, Spurs, Liverpool, Dortmund, etc. Played excellent football against all of them, and were never outclassed and hammered a few of them too. The losses were generally unlucky as well to add. Ten Hag had Ajax playing like one of the top teams in Europe, and went toe to toe with the best in Europe every year, despite constant turnover in their squad.

The problem with that argument is that you're not signing Ajax FC, you're signing one of their players. If you don't have Tadic, De Light, Ziyech etc you're not going to get the same level of play. A such players need to be assessed individually.

Think it’s short sighted not to recognise he’s performed in the CL against forwards like Haaland and Nunez. He’s also an Argentina international.

Whilst the week in week out standard is not as high at the PL this Ajax team didn’t just deliver inside of the domestic league.

I watched his performances, he got breezed past a couple of times. Benfica and a crap Dortmund are not the standard we should be looking at, when he comes up against the forwards of City, Chelsea, Pool, Spurs etc he will struggle.

He literally had Nunez and Haaland in his pocket. I’m not sure how you can spin that tbh.

ten Hag said after this that he's not a midfielder as he hasn't got the legs for it.

Think this one will conclude within a week or so. Either to us or Arsenal

When he comes up against the forward of City and Pool? Ie two players he has performed well against? Which Chelsea forward is giving anyone problems right now? Spurs you may have a point.

If Ronaldo is shown his long passing montage, I'm sure he'd forget about leaving. If someone' makes a run he will find them. We have to get him

By what I literally posted in my post

Are the rest of Liverpool and City players not going to play? Darwin is a bit crap anyway, everyone knows Pool overpaid. It's Salah, Diaz, the better Fullbacks etc that he'll have to contend against. Vs Dortmund who were poor last season and Benfica then yes the higher overall level of play of all the teams I mentioned (including Chelsea who battered Real in terms of actual pkay in the CL but lost to a couple of howlers) will be a much bigger challenge for him.

Contextually that doesn't make sense as aside from subsequent ETH comments that highlighted issues with Martinez in midfield, we only moved on to Martinez after our attempt to sign the other Ajax CB came to nothing.

We clearly want a CB, he is primarily a CB and if he comes here he will primarily play as a CB.

I get that people want a midfielder but ye have to wait for us to actually sign that midfielder, not co-opt signings meant for other positions because you want a midfielder more.

Remind me the forwards of City and Liverpool again ?

He can absolutely play as CB or DM and be an upgrade for us in both positions. Our standards are really low right now due to an extremely weak spine of the team.

Where he plays will likely depend on who else we sign. Whether we can get good midfielders or good defenders in

Read above

Collectively as a team we will be much better I reckon, both on and off the ball. Lisandro won't have to defend in isolation, I think Maguires long term position is most under threat, as I anticipate that Varane will be expected to sweep.

If we want him, we'll get him. He's never choosing Arsenal over us in these circumstances. I would be beyond stunned.
The only reason he may prefer playing for Arsenal is Arteta may have given him assurances over a contrasting role to what Heg is offering him.
I think Hag primarily see's Martinez as a CB but Arteta may use him as a LB or as DM.
London will also factor in.

And what makes you say he wants to play as LB or DM.

A tier one Dutch journo has already said United is the absolute priority for him. Don't know why we are entertaining this idea that hed choose Arsenal over us.

What make you say he doesn't ?
Maybe he'd want to try a new experience with another coach.

Simply put there's a reason Arsenal are still in the mix. He's clearly open to joining them too.

I think what this transfer window shows the most that if you took Eric Bailly, gave him a name change and let him play for Ajax, most fans would love the signing purely because it's a new thing and you get a dopamine hit from it.

The manager knows him, can play a long ball, can play as a DM, fits style of play.. all secondary arguments to actually seeing his profile as a short, slow on the turn, not physically dominant CB. Yeah it might work if you're playing in the ereedivisise against Rotterdam port workers, but 38 games in the PL with no DM protection and balls being pinged across the box from better wide players and fullbacks he won't be any better than our current defenders. In fact I'd wager he'd be worse than most of our CBs.

Reminds me of Sancho when if you'd actually watched you'd see he'd struggle in the PL due to his slowness and the bundesligas abundance of space, and yet 99% of this forum were dying to sign. All just dopamine hits. The fact our manager is literally only trying to sign former players rather than us having any idea about the ideal profile of a player to sign or how to build a good first team XI should ring alarm bells. We have four international starting CBs and that's still not enough, we need to spend £40m on another one that's not even better than most of the ones we have? Club is a joke. Nothing else for it other than waiting and seeing until the new season before anyone thinks of replying haha Maguire haha Varane

So you purposely forget he's played in the CL and gone up against the 2 most sought after strikers this summer (Haaland and Nunez) yet came out on top?

Which port did they work at again?

The tier one journalist who said United are the top priority is a better gauge of his preference than your punts.
