Interesting that ETH was adamant to sign Martinez over Torres who is cheaper and taller.

Managers want to work with players they already know

They don’t have much time to watch other leagues and games

Most of them have a limited knowledge of the players worldwide, they are not scouts, simply they have not time

I predict the new manager will favour Varane when he’s fit. Just a much better footballer. We will see though.

You know Ten Hag has confirmed Maguire to remain captain, right? I imagine that means he’ll be one of our starters.

Not sure if torres would have been cheaper. He was also rumored to have been priced at €50m to €60m.

Also, with Torres I don't think his pairing with MAGUIRE or Lindelof would have been any good.

I think we would have went after Torres if Ten Hag knew he was getting FDJ. It would have allowed Martinez to stay and we could have swooped in for Antony instead (before Arsenal jumped for Martinez)

Villarreal and Emery play more of a deeper block, no? Pau Torres is good on the ball and seems an alright defender, but in terms of aggressive, higher-line one v one isolations, I think he falls short compared to Martinez who obviously has that as his main skill set (pardon the pun).

Should we be worried by those stats of his that got posted earlier in the thread

They do in the CL but less so in La Liga I think. The average position of their defensive line surprised me:

But your point about aggression is right. He's a passive-style defender and we already have that in Lindelof and Varane at least. More aggression in defence suits our needs more.

Despite being vertically-challenged as an EPL defender, I am sure he would grow in stature in being one of the best, based on his stats last season.

So he's not joining the tour.

He's already been pictured training on his own at Carrington:

Stats are useless without the full context of the formation he was used in, the position he was playing as, the team members he was playing with and the opponent team's tactics. Take all stats with a pinch of salt.

Because he is looking for versatility. If you look at the profile of the players that ETH has asked the club to sign, they are all capable of playing in different positions due to their wide repetoire of attributes. Its also the best way to boost an existing squad that is lacking options in more than one area.

Torres is also not that good as a defender. He is good at reading the game and making interceptions but is average at tackling. He is like a regista who is playing at CB. OTOH, Martinez is excellent in all 3 areas.

Explain how do you know the guy's short and where is he short in particular, please.
Are you his lawyer?! :D

I didn’t say Maguire didn’t have a poor season. Varane was crap when Maguire was there, and he was crap when Maguire wasn’t there.

Hence the assertion that Varane was crap and it was nothing to do with Maguire.

We all know that it was Maguire who was crap.
Varane played with Real and was not crap

So when, in the last year, has Varane looked not crap?

The season before, do you know who else wasn’t crap? Harry Maguire. Our season fell apart when he got injured even.
We can discuss and argue all day but that's my opinion - and i respect your opinion too.

Lindelöf is horrible. Amazed people still haven't come around to that fact.
Don't get the whinging about him myself. He's supposed to be 3rd or 4th choice centre back which he's perfectly fine for. Not his fault the lads ahead of him are all sick notes and he ends up getting way more minutes than he should be getting. Solid pro and seems to have a good attitude; never hear him crying in the media or doing foolish shit for instagram likes.
