Interesting that ETH was adamant to sign Martinez over Torres who is cheaper and taller.

Never been a big fan despite the links over thr last 2 years. Martinez seems a better fit to provide a lot of what the backline has been lacking

Defenders with his aggression and tenacity come in short supply. There'll be hell to pay for any PL attackers that think too little of him this season. It's just a shame we had to pay a small fortune for him but there's only a tiny chance he'll flop.

Fair enough, I love Martinez though. We should have probably signed Torres over Varane last year.

If this is indeed the case, it just shows that EtH wants his defenders to be very aggressive and technical on the ball. This signing will also force DDG to play in a different more proactive style. Very interesting to seee who is oing to partner him. If Bailly manages to stay fit, Maguie could find himself on the bench pretty often.

Given Martniez’s height, he’ll partner Maguire or Varane to deal with crosses. Lindelof and Bailly are both better defenders than Maguire but both are useless in the air.

Does everyone we sign just end up on 100k plus? He’s from the Dutch league ffs, he would have been at best on a 5th of that before.
He was about to get a bumper pay rise once two clubs in the PL were vying for him, he'd also go to the club where his services were most valued, so his wage isn't outrageous, all things considered.

If lowballed, he'd probably fancy his chances on a big move after the upcoming season, particularly if he shines at the World Cup.

Kids who haven’t even made a first team appearance in other teams are getting like 50k a week. 100k for a 24yr old international sounds like a very good deal to be honest.

You already lookig for ways to turn on the manager?
Not at all. Just struggling with people demanding full backing of the manager and at the same time screaming for a DoF. We did was we always do, get the managers the players he wanted (or at least we're trying)

Taking into account Maguire's shortcomings, I doubt that the gaffer will risk playing Martinez+ Maguire combo. It will probably be Varane, as you mentioned.

Depends what we mean by backing/supporting the manager really.

I don't think there's any question that we're at least trying to get the manager his preferred targets. But we should also be supporting him with a top level scouting system he can trust.

A comparison being Klopp at Liverpool, who wanted a different player for RW before being rightly pursuaded by the scouting team that Salah was a better target. Do we have a system that would be capable of doing the same?

If this summer's buys don't go well then some blame should obviously be apportioned to the manager as these are clearly his preferred targets. But he could also reasonably argue that given he walked into a club with a much-criticised recruitment history who had just discarded their two most senior scouts weeks before the season ended, he had good reason not to to trust the recommendations they left behind.

I very much believe in the DOF set-up but when that DOF is obviously in the middle of restructuring the recruitment side of the club I think it's reasonable for the manager to have more say in transfers.

As a preferred option, probably. But if Varane's fitness issues continue Maguire may end up being Martinez' de facto main partner.

Torres also despite being taller is worse than martinez in the air

I agree with you but the problem is that Varane often gets injured. So when he's out, the manager will have to choose between Maguire and Lindelof to partner Martinez, even though I agree that Varane is better than both.

I don't know much about Martinez but i'm happy with this for two reasons.

1. I trust ETH over our 'recruitment department'.
2. He's a naturally left sided player, unlike all our other centre backs.
