Really very excited about this signing. He could be the new Cannavaro.

He might be our first Argentine that can speak good english. Don't remember Heinze and Di Maria speak english and I never heard Rojo and Romero's interview in english. I'm 100% sure Tevez english was so bad that even Rooney mentioned it. Knowing the language or can speak could help the player to settle in the new country.
Heinze and Di Maria had one phrase each,
"I want Liverpool" and "I want me mum"

Martinez is 5'9 not 5'7 and height doesn't matter that much if your timing is spot on. But you are also ignoring my comment about him having good aerial stats in a league with taller strikers, things winning headers is a thing where it doesn't matter how good the league is, it's all physicality so it really doesn't matter that they aren't that much smaller defenders in the PL. It only matter that Martinez is a surprisingly good header of the ball for his height due to his jumping and timing.
Martinez isn't 5ft 7, unless he actively shrunk since yesterday.

My bad. He is 5ft 9 which is still quite short in fairness though not as worrying as 5ft 7.

Makes sense for him not to join for Australia. He has a week to get settled a bit in Manchester with a new home and then can join for our penultimate two games of pre season.

Kante is an example. He is a tank. Lets say you put him in a 50:50 situation against Lukaku, an imposing figure. Kante wins 100% of the time.
Kante does not play CB. How a CB needs to win his duels is different to how a CM does. And Lukaku is such a shit example. I sincerely hope that I am wrong and this guy is a success but we will see, I have my reservation.

Centre of gravity, core strength and power trump that in most tussles, a short, powerful player is a nightmare to get around, outmanoeuvre or beat outright because of the recovery time and far superior balance.
And Martinez is this short strong powerhouse that will handle strikers like Kane and Haaland?

Paul Parker, Thiago silva, Ake, some CP dude
Parker was a full back only for utd. Might have played centre for an earlier club?

Peoples concerns on height are valid. There is a reason why short defenders generally get shifted to full back. G neville was tipped to move central but the odd time he did he struggled

Maybe even more than that if he does well, he's homegrown after all I've understood.

He will manslaughter Eredivisie players.

Really good at both CB and LB.

A few clubs in for him including Ajax and Villa.

Whoever gets him is signing a beast of a player. Would happily swap him for Maguire

We've got two matches scheduled over the 30th and 31st with the latter being at OT. Season starts the following weekend so I think we'll see more of an ETH starting lineup in one of those two. We could have Eriksen and FDJ in by then.

One of the wierdest signings I've ever seen when thinking about what we need Vs what we have and budgets. We might have the thinnest squad in the top ten outside of defence. It's like... We don't have perfect centres backs but at least we actually have enough centre backs.

Re height. I could see it not being a major issue in open play. We just need enough ability in the air so we aren't conceding one set piece every week to the lower in the table teams. ETH has no experience of this so hopefully this is thought through.

We have the numbers but not the quality. Hopefully a few of them will be sold soon

By this time next year he'll be 5'11 after 12 months stretching to reach Wan-Bissaka's passes.

Doesn't matter how many CBs you have if all of them are shit. We had 0 in GD in the league last year. We are leaking goals like crazy.

I'm not sure last season is a fair barometer to judge the quality of the group of players though. We were less than the sum of our parts, had a catastrophe of a manager whose job seemed to be to make things as bad as possible. Other seasons we have capable centre backs, even if Bailly and varane have very bad injury records

But we got rid of Ole in November

One that many people don't know, one of the best french defenders ever Jean-Pierre Adams. In fact one of the best pairing of french football wasn't particularly tall, Jean-Pierre Adams was 178cm and Marius Trésor is 182cm tall.
Thanks. Never knew that. Of course height can be an asset, but it can also make you less agile and slower off the mark.

If you could have Bailly’s athleticism, Harry’s head and Blind’s passing and overall reading of the game you would have the perfect defender. We unfortunately seem to buy them in bits. Looks like we are going for the Blind type again.

Dafaq?

Do you think he’ll settle in well in the premier league? What’s his best attributes? And things he’s weak at?
I think he will do well! His strong points are his tenacity, his long passing and never give up mentality. He just never gives up and he corrects his teammates. He doesnt take crap
