Players in the Dutch league also taller on average than in the PL.

I don't think that matters much in the grand scheme of things. Loads of Dutch posters/Ajax fans are on here right now saying he's not cut out for the PL. That's not exactly reassuring. let's be honest, they've all watched him way more than we have. Most of us are going by a few CL games, clips, and Opta stats that make us all giddy.

I hope he's a great signing. And I hope that we aren't yet again just pandering to the manager for exactly what they want in the face of common sense! We'll find out soon.

EDIT: Actually he's not even what ETH wanted as his first choice, that was Timber. Yikes!

I’ve not seen anyone say that? :wenger:

The Ajax posters think he’s brilliant!

You seem very negative about it for some reason?

Just incase anybody wondered if his stats look so good just because he's playing for a dominant team in a relatively weak league, here's him compared to a few other defenders when they were in a similar boat:

Hope he’s not as mental with toasters and bread.

This has been the weirdest summer. People who I used to consider sane posters have gone to the dark side parroting nonsense

heres a novel idea, let’s see the lad playing first eh

And yet he had over 70% aerial success rate, higher than any other defender in the Dutch league

Yep.

Even if we assume his stats drop off for some unquantifiable reason upon arriving here, it's not going to drop off so much to be a major issue. Not when someone like Ruben Dias can be a mainstay in the best defence in the league with a 59.6% aerial duel win rate.

If we're worried about anything defensively this season then it should probably be the likelihood of us getting ripped apart in incidents similar to that Melbourne goal. Because until we get used to the way ETH wants us to play, that's way more likely an issue than our CBs getting bullied in the air.

There’s a few odd agendas going on at the moment but most of the Ajax fans on here really rate the guy, more so than Timber.

Not sure where this not cut out for the PL is coming from?

@Massive Spanner

The Feyenoord fan on here (Not Dirk Kuyt) that's an analyst for a Qatari football club holds the same opinion as well.

I'm a neutral and thinks he's brilliant. I was hoping we'd consider him way before the links appeared (although i imagined him to be a more bang for buck signing for 30-35m, not this enormous amount  )

Gonna make a bold prediction and say that even him as a garden gnome will be better in the air & everything else than Lindelof. Apart from pointing maybe. Lindelof is king of pointing

I think he was a target for next summer but the interest of Arsenal forced United to act.

You seem quite negative about this and he's not even played one game? He clearly wanted him desperately enough and a huge Ajax fan that I know from the Netherlands said he will be more than worth the transfer fee.

So I will wait and see him play as I can't say I've seen him enough. But ETH has worked with him and evidently rates him highly so I will go with that for now.

I think it's a bit of an insane fee and I've seen a few Dutch fans today convey a lot of issues about him (admittedly there could be a lot more saying he's great that I haven't seen). I'm also just wary of CB's given we sign one for big money every summer and they always turn out to be a disappointment, so maybe the last 9 years have broken me. That and the fact that we are yet again giving the manager full control over who they want (and he's not even his first choice).

But... overall I am excited. If he lives up to all these stats and quotes we're being fed then it sounds like he will be a really good signing. Plus, unlike our other managers, ETH might actually... know what he's doing, which is nice.

if city signed him they'd be hailing pep as a genius and wondering why our scouting department didn't know anything about him.

The guy looks absolutely class, a proper modern day defender but does the dirty stuff too.

He's everything Lindelof thinks he is but more.

Yeah fair enough pal I know what you mean. Trying to be positive but he looks like a very modern centre half who is as good on the ball as the likes of VVD (statistically).

Clearly this is something key to how Ten Hag wants us to play and also to help us become more press resistant. He’s also well versed in playing a high line so positionally sound.

I think the above, mixed with his aggressive front foot defending, should make him a good addition to the defence. It’s also handy he can play LB or DM and is a leftie.

Why am I negative because I'm questioning the fee or what some Dutch posters who know him way better than I do say? You lot are mad.

It was the same shit when we signed Maguire. Anyone who said he cost too much or might not be good enough to make the step up got absolutely blasted on here and told "oh you're so negative you big weirdo".

Can I not be excited by a transfer whilst also having certain reservations or do I have to just be relentlessly positive about everything and don't question our glorious overlords who can do no wrong?

Yes you have to be relentlessly positive! I'm messing but I get what you're saying and think it's different to Maguire because I'd say most here would have seen Maguire play extensively. But to be fair, I couldn't believe we were signing Maguire for £80m at the time, I just can't say much about Martinez because I just haven't seen him play much. The fee is hefty, no doubt, and I too have reservations about his height, but just going to wait and see!

Hope so. If he is all those things and can adapt to the PL well he'll be a top signing.

Omg he's going to be as good as Maldini!

In all seriousness, really impressed with his stats.

People seem desperate to identify him as being a signing for one position or another. He's fairly young, has played a few positions, may take time to fully establish himself in a set position in our team in a new league. He offers a few options, and whether he plays as a CB, DM, LB or in a back 3 even may depend on a whole host of factors. Where he played at Ajax is only one of those factors. He may play one position at the start, or be a sub, or he may establish himself as first choice in a different position in a year or two. The fee is pretty standard these days, and isn't so large that there'd be any kind of pressure that he "must" start every game. We have a multiple CL winning CB and an £80m and club captain CB. And Lindelof despite having his flaws is excellent on the ball too and a good manager may be able to extract more from him too. It may take time for Martinez to displace one of our CBs, or he may play alongside both of them in a different position. Of course he may also immediately establish himself as first choice CB.

I'm just happy we signed him. He looks like a good player. Let's wait and see how he does over the course of the next couple of seasons.

You keep saying that, but that's not what I've been seeing...

Fee became higher by the day. Should have taken a month more.

On a serious note, sad to see him leave. Hope he'll do very well for United. Been a class player for us, true warrior. Good luck Licha!

Wonderful signing.

quite physical, good on the ball, great long pass, decent pace, aggressive and a surprisingly good in the air. Better than Timber, for now.

Martinez will be fine in ETH's system. I'm very happy with this signing and am fully convinced he will perform well.

Just read its official, 55 plus bonusses. Congrats on having him, he is a class player. Besides his height no weaknesses. For a central defender he can really play football, tackle, defend high and comfortable on the ball. I dont think ive ever seen him play a weak game. If he is good for the premier league we will see. I never thought too much of Donny vd Beek, but Martinez is something else. Its too bad Ajax cant keep their players. This one will be missed

I’m fairly certain that after one season, Martinez will be deemed the best CB currently at the club. I’m 100% certain no one will ever say he’s slow by then

Only maybe in his first season when played in the midfield did he ever look off the pace. Other than he's the most consistent performer we have, and it's always at least a 7

Martinez has all the qualities to be a future United and Argentina captain.. Really impressive player with a very wide variety of defensive and footballing qualities.. But his mentality sets him apart I think.. He will be a fan favourite in no time.. Im very very positive about that...

He seems like a really proactive & aggressive defender. I predict our fanbase won't like him for those reasons - it'll make most of them nervous watching him actually defend.

Pleased this one is done but only with United can the fee go from €45-50m in total to €68m including add ons.

You keep saying that, but that's not what I've been seeing...
Credit to you sir for digging out the positive posts from the Ajax fans in this thread. I think some of our fans were getting the wrong impression from one or two new Ajax posters in the last few pages.

It’s really hard to predict stats from one league to another. His aerial success stats from CL are:
2021/22: 63%
2020/21: 27%
2019/20: 50%

Most important in the end is not to win an aerial, but not to lose it.

The negative guys could also be just bitter.

Not seen a single one of them post that. Quote them! I smell BS.....

Whilst it's true we've paid the Utd tax once again I think people keep mixing the euros/pounds fee. All reports mentioned the £46m base fee a couple of days ago. Now they are reporting the add-ons included fee and also in euros.

Hard to know. We’ve never really given them a go. It’s always the manager who decides.
Is there any evidence of this?

I think the final straw with our scouting department was when they searched the globe for a centre back and right back, and they concluded Maguire and Wan Bisakka were our best options despite the fact they'd cost a fortune, £130m to be exact. Is it possible they reccomended several other options and Ole for some reason overuled everyone and insisted on AWB/Magure? Sure. I've not seen any evidence of that though.

Eaxctly, the game is changing an tbh it has always been this way. It's more important that a team has a quality talent than a player who is simply good for his position. Look at our best teams and players, most of them were great and played in different roles. People always act like this is an Ajax thing, but its true for most top teams.
At United alone, we've had Ronaldo, Rooney, Giggs, Scholes, Beckham, Ole, Irwin, Ole play in multiple roles. We have also had versatile squad players like Brown, O'shea, Park and Fletcher do the same. This feature allowed us to have teams littered with quality despite suffering injuries to some of our best players at different points.
In today's game, City, Liverpool and Bayern all have extremely versatile players starring in their teams.
City's entire frontline last season all had spells at the 9 role. Foden and Grealish could also play in one of the attacking midfield roles. Cancelo could play in either full back areas. DeBruyne and Bernardo Silva could also play on the flanks. Gundogan would come in at times and could play in anyone of the 3 midfield roles. What mattered the most was the fact that these players had the quality in different facets of their game to play different positions. Whereas for us, we couldn't even get Martial or Rashford to play on the right flank. Ronaldo did not play in any position outside of the 9 role.
Liverpool challenged City. They have three strong centre back choices. Milner and Oxlade can chip in in any position that is required. Henderson can comfortably take on the DM role when needed. Diaz, Salah, Jota and Mane could all play across the front line. Firmino could also come in an play as a 10 if required. Rather than simply have decent players for each position, they focused on attaining great quality players that were hard working and versatile enough to play in different roles whilst ensuring depth for the team. Whereas at United, our fans are already complaining about where Eriksen will play despite the versatility other teams have. Some are crying about VDB not playing his "ideal" role.

Bayern take this a step further. Lucas Hernandez can play LB and Centre back. Alonso Davies can play full back, wing back or left wing. They have Pavard who can play right back or centre back. Kimmich can play on either role in midfield or at right back. Gnabry Musiala and Muller can play right wing, AM or left wing. Sane can play on either flank as well.

What is important is that a team has good players, good players that can fulfill certain duties the manager wants. Not necessarily their role. Martinez brings a stopper who can cut out counter attacker, whilst having the ball playing ability to get the ball consistently into the midfield area. Currently, we don't have this type of player. Also add to this, Ten Haag builds up with 3 players at the back with either a CM, LB or RB coming in to support the two centre backs. Having 2 of Varane and Martinez always being in that position gives us a good amount of quality in the build up.

Spot on. There’s multiple people ready to shoot anyone down who dares raising questions about our new signings. It’s so strange.
