Not a fan of him playing for Argentina. He didn't even try to play on or anything and made it seem like a serious injury. Guess good thing he should be fine for when he returns but idk just doesn't sit well with me

He was decent. But also did not pass the ball forward enough

I saw it differently as it's become a game of cat and mouse now with the opposition very clearly knowing not to press Martinez and Onana. Instead, they are dropping off and baiting both of them to play passes into the middle spaces and pressing traps i.e when Casemiro/Eriksen have to receive a pass with a player over their shoulder.

I understand where you're coming from but I think it's a wise and smart move with how conservative and patient they are. Both Martinez and Onana were holding onto the ball and waiting for the Arsenal players to come onto them, then laid it off to Lindelof, who was the free man as a result of this. However, he barely played it to AWB, who had the space and instead kept pushing it back to Onana where we would just rinse repeat again. I think he was ill today so I'll give him a pass but it was disappointing.

I think you are right to an extent. But I would expect Martinez to be able to play balls into the forwards feet in those situations. Its possible the movement from the frontline was not there though. Although I did see a few times where he could have played the switch to Antony on the flank and he didn’t and it annoyed me.

I don't think there was many times it was possible and the conditions wasn't right to do this. As I said before, Arsenal had dropped off Martinez, so for him to attempt to play a ball to into feet through two waves of players, who have very deliberately set up a trap is a bit too optimistic. As for the switch, perhaps you're right there as I didn't notice that.

Whilst he's plenty capable, I still think he did the right thing not to force or overplay the ball. Relying on our centre back to regularly break the line with our atrocious team movement is a fundamental tactical issue.

Brighton do it all the time and I believe its what ETH wanted. Second half we did it a little after Im guessing ETH has a word

Well yeah Brighton average what 60%+ possession a game and play triangles all over the pitch with lots of well drilled interplay and each player playing at their top level regularly.

If those triangles and movement was in front of Martinez, I have no doubt he would play the ball.

I'm not absolving of him of not taking more responsibility but when our best passing player from the back, who demonstrated it game in game out last season is playing conservatively (relatively speaking), it's a much wider problem.

This is actually credit to Arsenal closing most of our passing lanes. He tried to ping to midfielders a few times but they promptly got outmuscled and losing the ball. So he ended up being more cautious.

Yeah pretty much I guess

The defence crumbled once he and linderlof went off. We need Martinez to stay fit.

How long is he out For!?

my bigger concern is why do we get outmuscled in midfield and forward so easily. Seems like every other team can easily knock us out of the ball.
Because as ETH said plenty of times. These players don’t compete for the ball. Look at the difference with Hojlund.

Although I don’t think Antony is very good. He is another player who competes for the ball.

It doesn't look like he's actually out, someone posted on the previous page that he's going to Argentina for international duty, no crutches or protective boot on.

Pictured in training for Argentina, so looks like he's fine.

Scaloni:
"Licha, as you know, had an issue with his feet.

”In the last game [at Arsenal], he was in pain and went out for precaution. They have done studies and he's well.

"We'll evaluate whether to use him or not.

"At first, for tomorrow's match, it'd be a little rushed. We'll see for the second match."

Bit miffed about this injury. I had him down as the type of player that would run through a wall for the shirt but that's clearly not the case.

Him going off proved to be crucial.

I guess the criticism is a bit of a second season syndrome having to live up to such a superb first one before the injury last year.

Dont get it personally, bar the booking he got I dont think he has sdone anything wrong. Still been good on the ball when there has been little movement aroudn him, still positionally sound. He hasnt been outstanding, but he has been our best defender by quite a mrgin so far when he has played and probably our best player.

We know he can be better than he has been but its not like he has been poor like almost the rest of the squad

Flipping heck mate. Even hard men need feet to play. Just because a player is resilient doesn’t make them immune to an injury making them incapable of playing on.

Game week 4 of the season isn’t the time to be a hard man.

I swear whenever we sign a good cb they can only muster up 1 good season before becoming riddled with injuries and/or having their form nose dive.

i don't think he played in either game for Argentina did he? why couldn't he have stayed here and recovered?!

Anyway, hope to see him back and pick up his form from last season. I thought he had a decent game against Arsenal before the silly booking.

Is he looking unlikely to start for Brighton? Not good if we don’t have either of him or Varane. We’ll get ripped apart. I’m surprised we’ve not tested Casemiro at CB yet. Maybe because we didn’t have another DM but now with Amrabat it could work.

It’s tough to know. The coach after calling him up said he wasn’t injured but had some pain in the area of the operation and they would be sensible and not take risks with him. So he could have trained but they didn’t involve him in the games out of precaution.

I'm sure Maguire and Lindelof will do just fine vs. Mitoma, and eh, Ferguson, yeah, and umm.... Fati. :(

Madness that their front free is so much better than ours.

If you take Rasmus out of the mix because he's new. Our best from free in the past couple of years has probably been Rashford, Martial and Anthony.

Even now it would be Rashford, Rasmus and we don't know who will play on the right.

Crap. Didn’t realise his metatarsal fracture needed surgery.

We have tested Casemiro as CB and it worked fine in that one game, but he is so much more important in midfield.

Yes it’s the first time someone mentions that he has problems from the injury he got last season. No worries however, many experts on the forum have promised this was not an injury to worry about.
