CBs are absolutely transformational to the way a team attacks, particularly teams nearer the top end of the table. Having Maguire (as decent as he has been) instead of Martinez has completely changed the way ten Hag approaches games. Assuming Martinez returns to last season's form, we will generate more chances and find more openings. He's fecking ace.

Which CBs at the top of the table transform the attacks if missing?

We weren’t good in attack last season, the difference was Rashford had a purple patch.

It's pretty amazing that people forget we had Shaw and Lisandro in top form last year, Rashford and Bruno in form of their life, and we were still shite in attack, scored so little and created so little game after game. Lisandro and Shaw returning in half decent form won't solve our FINAL THIRD PLAY problems.

Absolutely no reason why he wouldn’t get back to normal now the issue is fully fixed

Apart from the general theme at United where even the signings that DO show quality form for up to a year, quickly drop gears afterwards.

Under Ten Hag Harry plays on the right so he has not replaced Martinez in that regard and if we are talking about our passing game then we should be better with Harry and Martinez as a CB combination as Harry leaves Sicknote Varane for dust when it comes to a passing game.

Agreed there. The only other compromise without Varane at the back is our lack of pace, so we’re probably dropping 5-10m further back than what we would ideally like to. Probably the reason why we’re still linked to Todibo. We really should have tried to go for Kim MJ in the summer :(

If we wanted a solid quick CB with limited footballing ability and contributed five or six goals a season then there is another player in Italy that was voted in their team of the year that would be handy as well but we won't go there :nono:

 loves me some Smalling

I thought KMJ was fairly alright with his passing/passing accuracy?

Passing accuracy should always be decent when you play in a league when you have enough time to smoke a cigarette before an opponent approaches you after you receive the ball.

Needing a CB to fix our impotent attack. Thought i heard enough of that during the summer when people were making similar claims for the need of a sweeper keeper.

Like Onana will transform us. Or Amrabat. Or Casemiro when he's partnered with Amrabat etc etc

Ain't no centre-back and left back transforming us. Our front players look like they've never played together, Martinez and Shaw aren't changing that.
Maybe because they haven’t. Hojlund is new in the team this season. Affects everything. He needs chemistry with the players upfront with him for us to start clicking as a team.

Its not like out defending hasn't been a problem either. If you concede less, you need to score less to win. Of course getting him and shaw back will make the team better. It won't make our forwards better, but it will definitely help solve some of the problem.

Many people think there is something wrong with the system if one single CB can cause the entire attack to stop scoring.

It is not one single CB only....Our LB and CB were missing almost within the same period who capable ETH tactic at the back. Our left hand side from the back is totally shut down at the moment (including out of form Rashford).

Maguire is playing good recently and switching the ball to left side fluidly but he is not the type to break the line from the back.

Lisandro is the only one CB at our thin squard who having that ability. Maybe Lisandro's missing is not related to scoring, but it is related to play of style.

Also, when the strikers were missing one on one several times, it is the problem of confidence..

The idea that a CB is going to transform us is far fetched. Our problem is creating and scoring goals, other sides aren't reliant a ball playing CB for this, only us apparently.
I think it's a combination of both Shaw and Martinez being one of the best in the league at playing out from their respective positions (so the drop-off between them and their replacement is bigger - and don't forget we've been down to about our 5th choice replacements in both positions), plus our entire set-up seemed reliant on having that playmaking ability out of the defence allowing us to play a more unbalanced midfield further forward. The latter is an issue I have with ETH, in that it seemed he continued playing that unbalanced midfield even without the ability to step in and help from behind.

I don't think Martinez by himself will make a significant difference. But Shaw and Martinez together will, as long as they both come back in fairly good form. Not in the sense that our entire attack will suddenly click because of them, but our overall system and ability to pass through the lines and control the play will all improve. That will help the attack improve to some extent.

Yep. Or our midfield's ability to not play hot potato with the ball

I think people have slowly had to reckon with the fact that we got very very lucky in a lot of our results last season in the league and our points tally was a false one.

Feckin hell, the number of times I've read that we got 'lucky in the league' after finishing in the top 4 is fecking tiring from you lot.

There was a game last season where Martinez was rested and we were absolutely toothless. He came on second half and his passing absolutely started opening up the other team. Ended up winning and he did transform our attack on that day. Not saying he'll do that all the time, but I think some might be forgetting how good his passing from the back can be.

Think he will make a big difference having him back, both defensively and for our build up

Well Rehab means, atleast couple of weeks away before training.. Probably for our Feb run in .

For the love of god don't rush him back again, season is a write off anyway.

Really miss this fellow. Hope he returns in decent form, with no second season syndrome.

Don’t rush him back again…should just let him train with the team for a few weeks. Let him sit on the bench for 3-4 games until he is back to 100%.

Tired of everyone getting injured and then re-injured all the time. Same goes for Mount, let them train and earn a place not just thrown in the second they are fit.

We have just two games in January. Let those pass by and then we can get back with our proper team which should include Casemiro and Lisandro. Hopefully, there will be some games behind closed doors to help them get back to peak fitness and help us February onwards. With no Europe, we need to play our best team every game.
