Make no mistake if Lisandro makes that block and stops that goal he has covered the entire defence and DM from mistakes and it would have been a top class bit of defending. You wouldnt see better.

He didnt manage to get back and time the tackle. So not top class defending no, but also clearly not his mistake. He just couldnt make up for the mistakes of Casemiro, Lindelof and Malacia and to some extent even Eriksen who did a great job tracking back when nobody else was helping Lisandro but stepped out at a bad time leaving the pass to go through. And he also could have fouled to slow down the move and reset the team which is something someone playing a deep midfield position needs to know when to do.

2nd goal Lindelof lost the ball well out of position and took himself out of the defensive phase. So its all on Lisandro in the middle. Yes obviously we're in trouble if he doesnt intercept the ball across or stop the shot and he does neither. In that situation he should be getting help though. Our fullbacks should be tucked in helping defend the middle. Our DM should try to get back and fill in for Lindelof. None of that happens which leaves it 100% up to Lisandro to have to block or intercept. And he doesnt. So yes its obviously not strong defending, you can call it a mistake as he didnt do enough to put off or win the ball. But it was also after 3 or 4 teammates made mistakes and left him all alone to bail out the entire team. And on this occasion his defending wasnt strong so it didnt happen. If he had managed to intercept or block the shot it would have been good defending, not best defender around defending like the first one. So its more reasonable to think he should have done better

he has all the tools for sure, his passing is very high level. Tenacious, can tackle, moves the ball well.. I agree with you. I think his own preference is to play CB.

That's exactly what I'm doing. I'm trying to fully understand your assessment by using the stats (i.e the body of your posts in this performance thread) to 'appreciate' how you've come to your conclusions. Statistically speaking, you are bias against Martinez by moving the goal posts to undermine what he has shown by setting unfair standards/comparisons and trying to back that up with an obtuse use of stats with little context. What's truly weird is that more than 10% of your posts on this forum resides in one certain Swedish defender's player performance threads. The correlation is startling and not lost on many here.

Superb player, for a CB his passing range is phenomenal. He’s one of only a few players at the club that I don’t worry when he has the ball under pressure. He’s also shown excellent defensive qualities at times and is/was building a good partnership with Varane.

Whereas in defense lot of times you have so much time on the ball. That makes a huge difference. And obviously he has so many more options. And with his ability can make a beautiful vertical breaking the lines pass.

He has played in midfield and been pretty good there to be honest. I doubt his passing and awareness would be the issue

That’s a fair assessment. Think he could do it though, he’s just a really good footballer which sounds obvious but is great to see, either as a Cb or hypothetically a cdm.

Can you imagine? Haha, would be a joke of a player. As far as ball playing cb’s go he’s one of the best I’ve seen, in terms of passing range at least.

My favourite attribute of his though is the South American bite that he brings to his game. Think he will prove a good signing.

I feel if he was 6’4 he would lose some of the advantages he has right now with the low centre of gravity. He’s able to anticipate and get ahead of strikers to intercept passes and be more aggressive in getting in front of the forwards. It’s a lot easier to do when you are shorter and agile.

Yeah he can get away with being very physical with strikers in a way a bigger player probably wouldn't. He is constantly giving forwards nudges in the back before they receive the ball and then rushing around and pipping the ball off of them. I don't think he would get away with that if he was 4 inches taller and 20 pounds heavier.

He'd be a top CB in any era, for any club, he's that good IMO. Early days but I feel like he's already going to be the best post Sir Alex signing we've made. Although I agree with you, there’s very little chance he’ll get trialled there now because we have Casemiro. If we didn’t sign Casemiro then he could of been the solution to our DM problems but then that would still leave a hole in CB.

TenHag is on record stating that although both blind and martinez has the quality to play in midfield they are both lacking the engine to successfully hold a position there.
