Can't believe I fell for the supposed height problem and doubted him. What a player, oozes class.
Still early days, but the way people were going on you'd think defences were under constant bombardment and that Martinez would be completely bullied. Regardless of how he does from here on out, it's highlighted just how wrong that interpretation of football is. Maguire and Lindelof, both of whom are bigger and heavier than Martinez, were and are so much more susceptible to being overawed. What a signing.

Again, what a man! Singlehandedly bringing sexy back for all the shorter fellas

I personally don’t believe we went for Timber over him. Maybe we wanted both but I always rated this guy higher.

Proving everyone wrong… a lot of people saying he’ll fail just because of his height. This guys class and has brought so much with him and added so much to the team! Long may it continue.

Oooo Lisandros Fking magic, he wears a magic hat and when he saw old Trafford he said I fancy that, he nearly signed for arsenal but snubbed them because there shite… he signed for MAN UNITED because we’re fking dynamite!!

I like him. Think he and Varane are forming a nice partnership.

I already feel so comfortable when he's on the ball. His passing is brilliant.

On match days I am always hyper. But unlike last few years now days at least I don't panic when we defend because Martinez and Varane are playing. That's the best compliment I can give.

Early days but this signing looks like a masterstroke. It's so visible when he's not on the pitch - he is absolutely crucial to us moving forward.

He's a very good defender but it's his passing that really impresses me.

He's a fecking excellent passer, we've missed having a central defender great on the ball badly since Rio left.

I don't even think Rio was an excellent passer (more a good dribbler who could stride forward with the ball very well), Vida passed forward a lot less but based on the eye test, seemed a lot more accurate with them to me than Rio.

Martinez's passing is different class, there was one sequence where they were almost using him as a quarter back

So long as we get back to contending, he’s going to be one of our most important players for the remainder of this decade. If we keep stuttering, Barcelona will come calling… he’s absolutely perfect for their style of play.

Rio's passing was very good in his earlier days, but over his time with us it slowly but surely deteriorated. By the last few years they were together I actually do think Vidic was better at that (who had done the opposite and went from being fairly average to quite good with his passing by the end). Rio in his early days was better than Vidic ever was though.

He is awesomely good but I think it’s difficult to deny that he’d be even better if he was six inches taller (as many CBs are). Still, who cares? He’s bloody brilliant.

If he was 6'3 he'd be worth 100m.

It's sort of nice though that a 'smaller' cb can prove defending isn't about being tall.

Timing and positioning will always be more important. His bravery and aggression though make him stand out, he just fights for everything.

Will he win every header? no - but he's clearly nowhere near as bad as people feared or tried to make out. Even the commentators have stopped talking about it now.

He'll be worth that at the end of this season anyways, granted he keeps these performances up.

In terms of ball playing as a centre back, is there anyone as good as him? I can’t think of one off the top of my head. I definitely don’t think there’s anyone who fizzes their passes as well as he does. Makes such a difference when someone hits their passes like that.

I think Hummels, Blind, Alaba, Laporte, Torres are some of the best out there in terms of passing. Not surprised most of them are lefties.

Can’t remember if I’ve already commented on his EL performance but he’s very good. His quality is obvious. I do think his height presents some issues but the positives he’s shown so far certainly outweigh that.

Really glad we bought this fella. Future captain if he goes on like this.

Gone back to sample some of the steamin' hot takes from after the first couple of games:
Sorry, but this guy is not going to make it in PL. Not just for us, for any PL team. He will be targeted and destroyed.

Waste of money, and for a position we didn't really need players. One of the worst transfers ever for us.
He won't make it as a CB here.
No way he will play CB again for us. Easily bullied here. Should try him as DM just to recoup any value left for him.
What an awful idea it was to sign a CB this short and this shit from the Dutch league for £55m. And people want us to pay £80m for Anthony?

None of these people have posted a single word in this thread since just after the Brentford game.

Also, a shout out to @GledTheRed for being a very fair, equal opportunities knee-jerker:
Looks shit.
Absolutely shite. Add him to the deadwood next summer.
...
Absolutely LOVED that.
Love this guy, miles better than the ponderous plodding Harry & Victor.

Mabye someone could post his Aerial stats, but so far he doesn't seem to struggle at all in his aerial game. His stats before coming here were better than some CB playing in top clubs, like Dias and others so I don't think it will be issue.

Also he might lose an important duel once in a long while but he will make up for it with all of his positives. Great aggression, fantastic ability tokeep the ball under pressure, passing and vision. But really he's a great all round defender and his positioning and aggression gives him the edge to win many balls for which others wouldnt contest..

Just hope he will keep his consistency with such style of play buthe seems like a great self motivator so there's big hope it's not just a turn of form currently

:D People just dont watch football outside of the UK. Those current Eredivisie players are doing damn well in the hardest league in the world. I said this before he touched a ball for United in this thread, he will become a fan favorite and is a future captain!
So glad to see him shine at UTD. Dude is super likeable and a brilliant player.

Fair play to GledtheRed.
