A reminder that not only is he a very good defender, but he's also the all elusive Left Footed CB we've been after since LVG.

LVG used Blackett... gave up Nani for Rojo... Converted Blind to CB who to be fair was good there in his final season before Mourinho came in and moved him to LB, but he had uncomfortable times before that as he was transitioning

Then we signed Lindelof and Maguire who both went in at LCB at first but are right footed. And now finally ETH comes in and signs the Left Footed CB we've had talked about since LVG took over

He should have given a penalty away in the first game and looked a bit rough but he was excellent last night. A warrior. All this nonsense about his height being an issue in terms of his competitiveness should well and truly be stopped after that game.

Not necessarily. Nunuz wasn’t playing. I’ll hold judgement until after a few more games against strong, physical types. Having Casemiro in will definitely help, mind. I know his stats in the Eredivisie are impressive but the Premier League is elite tier.

Sure, but doing it in the Premier League with a higher level of players on the pitch and better managers is a different kettle of fish. I don’t see anything wrong with holding my judgment rather than being a knee-jerk merchant.

His goal line save/clearance from Bruno's shot will remain one of the best pieces of defending this season.

The way he reacted so quickly to this random shot from his own teammate is incredible.

That's usually the type of nonsense we shoot ourselves in the foot with, I just knew it was our night when that somehow didn't go in.

How Bruno managed to nearly slice a volley into our own goal... that was a real sliding doors moment for both players.

Bruno could have gone down as the villian, but instead Martinez is now a hero. Incredible the difference a week can make.

It was great to see him pushing into midfield at times and providing reinforcement, its exactly what we’ve needed for such a long time. Liverpool really struggled to assert themselves.

As pointed out before, even players like VVD struggle against opponents like Haaland etc. All the data shows that the stuff about Martinez isn’t true.

All the more to withhold judgement. Last night’s performance was impressive though and I hope that’s his baseline.

He is like the super saiyan version of Daley Blind. His passes from the back were brilliant. Too bad we don't have a prime Ronaldo(both) chasing those down. Love what I'm seeing so far!

So what was the duel for Brentford's second goal? Can't lose a duel if you don't attempt one :D

Great performance yesterday, but it's always difficult to judge a defensive performance when the team is largely sitting back and therefore there is a lot more protection for the defenders. Would have to see how he does when we are asked to push forward more and leave space in behind.

Having Casemiro will definitely help though!

Pretty good for being the shortest most helpless and feeble defender in the premier league ever!! blanco texto

ajax forgot to add a zero to the end of the transfer fee. we’ve made them look like right mugs.

(bar Brentford goal, don't challenge it doesn't count right).

People complaining about his height need to get a grip. I was the smallest guy on the pitch playing semi-professional as a teenager but still got on the end of the majority of corners to the point an opposition was complaining to his teammates about me. If you want to get on the end of that ball, you will do so and Martinez is doing exactly that.

You do know that he played against Haaland before right? Also Eredivisie has a lot of tall and physical strikers. He will be fine.

His aerial game is not his issue. His jumping is amazing, he can jump as high as taller players. His positioning is somewhat erratic at times and that can come with a heavy price.

Absolutely outstanding, but I do think Carragher was right. This might be the type of game that suits him. It'll be a test for him when he's up against another 'physical' side who might target him.

But I also think the Brentford game was blown out of proportion. He was very poor, but everyone was. Really hope he kicks on now. He could become a cult hero here very quickly

Why? Sounds like it doesnt have anything to do with the player in question. If it was he would have done it for Benfica

Carragher's point about Baresi being the same height in commentary last night was interesting, same could be said about Cannavaro too, both similar height to LM.

Give it another few matches and people will be slating him again for being short when we're targeted with long balls. I don't mind. He's been quality. People act as if height is the most important factor in a CB. Look at Maguire, he's tall but poor on the ball. I know which I'd rather have.

He defended bundles of crosses against Brentford too. Toney is one of the best in terms of aerial duels and he barely got a sniff out of him.

People are blowing this WAY out of proportion because Neville wet his pants live on commentary.

I've seen enough already to know Martinez has zero problems in the air. Will he win every header? no. Is he a problem that will be targeted? no.

It reminds me of when teams targeted De Gea with long shots because he had a poor long shot % Tottenham kept shooting from 30 yards and the commentary team made out like he was going to let one in any moment.

Funny how that fazed out.

I was really really surprised by that performance. I slated him on the weekend because he looked like a genuine pub player at Brentford but massive turn around tonight. I am now completely confused as to what to think…. Guess it’ll be a case of waiting for a large sample size but that was a massive performance and shows he has it in him but also has Brentford in him. feck knows !

Except he didn't.

Yes I've seen the Eredivisie stats, his highlight reels and am aware that the Dutch on average are some of the tallest in the world. But that doesn't mean the level of play (passing accuracy, vision, tactical nous, speed of play and so on) is on the same level.

ETH himself said he's played against bigger men his whole career and he's never seen him dominated. He's played against taller, strong pysical types his whole career.

Liverpool also tried playing some lobbed balls his way but the dude has a spring in his shoes and just clears everything

Sure. I'm not going to argue against the boom bust lot on here. 1 bad game against Brentford and 1 good one against Liverpool gives me every right to take a more balanced, patient view.

Sure and that's cool. Whether or not Martinez will be an amazing defender for us or not, time will tell. I was just maybe saying the doubts about his physicality and ability to deal with bigger players should be put to one side. The guy is a beast.

He actually looks like he is enjoying the challenge of playing for United. No hiding, wants to show us how good he is. Love it

He's a beast, but I'd agree to disagree. He was up against weaker players last night (Salah, Firminho and Diaz). Let's just say that I'm cautiously optimistic.

You know it was going to be our night when he shouldered Salah in the opening minutes. Absolute monster.
