Maybe I'm blind or dishonest but I don't think that he was an issue individually, he misjudged the ball on the third goal but otherwise he seemed to be the one defender getting at the end of crosses and clearing danger. The issue is that he is targetted and has to often be involved in duels which means that the players around him need to cover behind him. Shaw next to him was abysmal, once again.

I agree. Doesn't change that Maguire and him are a mismatch.

There was a reason he was substituted at half time.

Started the game really well I thought. But after the De Gea clangers, he lost his composure along with most of the team.

We went and spent 60m to bring in another guy with the same issues. If Martinez fails it will be on ETH and not the board for me. I feel like he underestimated Prem.
Sure, if

Its 2 games in and he had 1 decent game and then everyone had a terrible game today and he made a mistake for a goal. Its far too early to talk about failing

Yea it's a big if and I am hopeful he will improve but I don't see him nailing down that CB spot personally.

I agree with that. Didn't look good at the 3rd but overall, wasn't majorly worse than others. It is getting tricky though, we could get away with a short CB, but adjustments have to be made. Otherwise we are only adding more potential points to the team, opponents can try to exploit. I thought it was borderline optimistic what the manager did today, especially knowing that Brentford are a physical side and we already know, that our keeper struggles with that.

Doesn’t he also play DM? Play him there and forget about fred and mctominay. Worth the try, those 2 have been underachieving for years

Better quickly shift him to DM or this will be another big chunk of money thrown in the bin.

He's a liability as a CB? Who would have thought this? Not a single person on here said he would....

I hope he can turn it around but that today was a real worry.

He's too small to handle the physicality of the PL. Maguire had to keep swapping with him because he couldn't handle Toney
He may not be a long-term solution at CB, but I would definitely try him as a CDM.

Before you laugh at me on the proposal, I must ask you this: were Paul Scholes, Claude Makélélé and N'Golo Kanté big specimens of footballers?

Stick prime Cannavaro and Stam in our defence and they'd struggle with that clown behind them and a non-existent midfield ahead of them.

I for one am shocked that yet another centre back wasn’t going to fix our defence, when it has been apparent since the days of Smalling, Jones and Blind that the problems lay in front and behind them.

Played well today. For today abysmal performance reasons we should look elsewhere.

Moving him to DM would already be a big chunk of money thrown in the bin. £55m could have got us a very good actual specialist DM.

But we've done it now so you're probably right.

At least with those guy we actually had decent, sometimes excellent defensive records.

It most likely could have but now we must face the reality that ETH chose to spend it on him.

We shouldn't have signed him and certainly not for that fee.

He's very calm on the ball but in all seriousness his height is giving the rest of the team anxiety as they are trying to cover him on set pieces.

Shite today, but a large part of that was that we let the game be played on Brentford's terms. When (/if) we reach a level of competency on the ball such that we dominate possession, dictate the tempo, and hem the opposition in their own half, then at least Martinez has his strengths on show as well as his weaknesses. If you spend half the game conceding daft free kicks within striking distance of the box and as a result are trying to defend one chaotic ball into your box after another, then you definitely want a big dominant header of the ball. But clearly, the plan is to avoid being in that situation in the first place.

Too short despite not being at fault for any of the goals because of his height
Absolutely bonkers how this narrative was just being rammed down our throat all match. Naturally there are question marks around him, but I think it's more an intensity issue at the moment.

He's small for a defensive midfielder, he'd need to massively work on his positioning but he'd still get roughed up there also. The players you mentioned also started as forwards or wingers, not CB's. We have no idea he can play that position to that ability, and if he could he'd already be in there.

That's what I thought too. Hopefully we just ease him back into the next game. No starting as I don't want the lad's confidence plummeting because of our shit show.

I not gonn talk about height, but just looked utterly out paced, classed, muscled and everything. In no way did he look like a £50 million player, looked like some one having to step several leagues in quality and not being able to do it.

Obviously poor for the 3rd goal but that was more of a consequence of our team being a foot shorter than theirs. Was clear we were going to be bullied in the air when seeing the lineup.

I thought he was doing decent at the passing to distribute the ball from a CDM position higher up when we were pushing them. The issue was that the one who was supposed to cover behind his back was Maguire, and you knew by then that this CB pair would not work. Unless you want to keep a fast FB behind all the time to cover it, which will make us unbalanced in the attack.

At least with those guy we actually had decent, sometimes excellent defensive records.
And I said at the fecking time that they were not the problem, yet many wouldn’t accept it. We have had a one-dimensional keeper for a decade and never want to address our midfield shortcomings, yet here we are: throw another CB on the bonfire and put your feet up!

A section of our fanbase have blinkers on to the extent they are unable to think rationally.

People were mocked for talking about his height when it was clearly going to be an issue. We should open up hos transfer thread just to expose the dumb posts that were making fun of the posters who questioned his fit for the league.

The best responses were trying to use absolute all time greats like Cannavaro and Baresi as reasons why it was fine.

I could post this every week and it will be the same concern every match. We are going to start every match with a physical weakness which every team is going to exploit. He maybe wasn’t at fault for the first 2 but he certainly got bullied for the 3rd goal. It’s the same threat he’s going to have every week.

Brentford made a conscious effort to target that side of our defence.
I feel like this could end up being an example of why it’s important to have a director of football and scouting team. This signing was driven by ETH who has had no experience of the premier league. If he had experience first hand how physical and direct a lot of the teams are, I question whether he would have signed Martinez as a centre back. We’ve not paid that much money for him to play any other position other than CB.

The hilarious thing is that most of us have whinged about Lindelof for being weak and easily bulliable for years.
And he's 6ft 2, so at least has some sort of presence, albeit a weak form of it.

But you simply can't make up 5 or 6 inches in height against certain balls however much you're committed.

I hope he can turn it around but that today was a real worry.
 please point out ANY moments that were a worry?

I genuinely want you to pick out a moment you saw him in trouble today?

I've seen some posters saying he was a worry and he got bullied, when he barely lost any challenges? at one point he ragdolled Toney to the floor and Mbembo bounced off him too.

Yes he is small but he leaps very well.

And they should still be mocked, his height wasn't the issue this game.
