Well, it was predictable. I am not talking about his height alone here. Signing a small CB with no athleticism for an EPL team is ridiculous.

These Dutch managers don't seem to see what other people see in this sport in this league. VG did it here before and now this guy. They have no idea what to prioritize first when building a squad.
Blind was very good for us at CB

Made a bad mistake for the 3rd goal

Not even going to blame him he was so far out of his depth today

Awful decision to pick him for this game as a centre back

I remember vidic and evras 1st games they said they got a reality check at the physicality of the PL…. Martinez got that today… early days for him but I cannot see him playing centre back for United in the PL you need height… malancia looked good hopefully he starts over shaw v Liverpool

Ugh, looked poor. Many of the issues many posters flagged up prior to his signing. Here's hoping he gets a grip of the league very, very soon.

Try him as a holding mid. Teams will just target him all season

A predictable disaster already at the role he was brought to do (CB in a back 4). Every single game he's going to be a target in the PL whether it's set pieces, long balls or runs in behind.

Either:
- play a back 3
- move him LB where Arsenal were going to play him (where we don't need him because we bought an actual left back)
- get some tall ball winning protection in front of him at DM
- play him at DM
- drop him for Lindelof or Varane

Otherwise £55m+ down the drain. I really hope I'm wrong.

Yes, let's judge him completely based on two games where we were shit all over the place, typical Caf, never change.

I think if you're blaming him alone for the 3rd goal/problem at set pieces you're letting people off the hook who shouldnt be

Watch again. Thats Eriksen's man running off him at the back post, he doesnt go with him and then Dalot loses the header against him. Thats what puts the ball into the 6 yard box area dropping towards where Lisandro has gone back to the goal line. Goalkeeper was blocked on first cross and never gets back into a good position for when the ball goes back towards his goal from the Brentford player.

At that point Lisandro doesnt know where the ball is and he doesnt attack it to try and win it like the attacker, who does so and puts it in. At that point having gone to the goal line and with the keeper not being in position, and with the ball being allowed to be headed into that area he needs to clear the ball. And he fails. And its not convincing defending at all. Its his mistake.

But it doesnt excuse the process of mistakes before that from Eriksen, Dalot and De Gea that led to him needing to make the clearance.

He was and it didn't fix the team. Fixing a CB position in this squad while being on limited budget is what I called getting priority wrong.

Tactically, having a smaller and slow CB give us (who wants to play high and possession football) huge disadvantage to us because the other team will break us out with long/high ball and they will get lucky occasionally with it. This signing just does not make sense at all in every sense.

Nothing new. This club is addicted to spend ton of money on shit players. We blow out our budget every season on godawful signings instead of spreading it on some good players.

50m for this. Him and Maguire combined cost 130m.
80m for Maguire, 46m for Martinez, 34m for Varane, 31m for Lindelof, 30m for Bailly. In total 221m pounds spent on central defence and not one half decent player in that position.

I guess at some point we'll have to try him as a defensive midfielder alongside Fred and Eriksen, with Bailly and Varane behind him. Not because he has been terrible at CB but because we simply have no midfield options

According to Wiki Ben Mee is only 5ft 11in. He really melted in that moment. I think we need to play a back 3 where he could work as the LCB alongside Maguire and Varane.

Where has his so called aggressiveness gone? Early days, but gets outmuscled/bullied, not particularly fast, useless at defensive corners...

He might turn it around, but wouldn't surprise med if we end up regretting not going for Pau Torres.

Ten Hag said his first priority was the midfield.
He is not the one closing deals

There's your solution. I'd imagine he'd be excellent in a back 3. The problem with playing him LB is that he seems quite slow- I can imagine wingers getting a lot of joy from him. EtH already said he can't play DM.

Poor again today. Awful defending for the 3rd goal conceded. Based on his last two performances he should fall back in the pecking order as 4th or 5th choice of centre back.
This is genuinely one of the worst signings ever
Nah that's not fair. He made zero mistakes today apart from on the 3rd goal where he slipped changing direction.

Losing a header in that situation isn't all on him.

Once you get your heads back together you'll realise he was actually good today.

Everyone wants to jump on his height again, but he's at fault for one of the goals, and that's because he knocked knees with Mee and fell over. He fecked it up, but by misreading the flight of the ball and stepping in, not by being a midget.

Not to mention that if you need anybody to win a 50/50 on the fecking goalline not to concede, there's bigger problems than the player who's lost that.

What looks like another horrific signing and before someone jumps in with he needs time. Meh is what I say to that. Looks an absolute mess of a player. 57 million, we’ve had our pants pulled down again. Being small isn’t an issue if you have some toughness to you but he looks weak and afraid. Very erratic positionally aswell.

He wins a lot of duels partly because teams put him in a lot of duels. You have to adapt the team to be able to win the second ball, sticking a pedestrian Eriksen in front of him, sluggish Maguire and Shaw and a passive keeper is probably the worst combination for him.

Good footballer but anyone choosing to believe that his physical profile is not a problem in the PL are deluding themselves.

If he plays next week vs Darwin Núñez then Núñez gets a hat-trick. Luckily for you, he won't start.

Said it all along; decent footballer, wrong league.

Don't think it wise for ETH to just throw him into the team like that he should have been eased in. Now Varane is back we can take him out if the spotlight for a bit.

He got hooked at HT.

It's one of the worst signings ever purely because we massively overpaid for him, and it shouldn't have been a priority position for the team. If it weren't for the latter, it'd just be a poor signing we overpaid for. It's criminal when the rest of the team needed surgery

I don't want him playing DM myself, I'd have rather bought an actual DM.

Patrice Evra got hooked at half time

Yeah its the height agenda, its still his mistake but people are so ready to blame it on the height that they can't see something basic like that if a player twice his size did the exact same things he did there it would be the same result because he doesnt know where the ball is and doesnt properly challenge for it, which is the mistake.

Yet, we didn't fix it soon enough. Of course, it is not all on him unless he pins hope on a guy who does not want to come (and said it weeks ago) till this late, which is very likely what happened.

Could have tried for another DM/CM with 50M.

Is he a £60m defender in your opinion?

Im pointing out that you can’t blame the manager. The club have been doing this to many managers. That is clear to see

He's got superior protection for his flaw: Smalling is dominant aerially and athletically. Valencia can mark Attlee on his side out of the game. Ashley Young is decent, not any worse than Shaw in this form. Carrick-Herrera is 10x than Eriksen in deeper role +McTominay +Fred in midfield. Fellaini while limited add that physical presence heighten up the pitch, and help in set piece defending.
So the issue isn’t his height then. Its the team got it

Blind was very good for us at CB
Blind was 5ft 11 and an extremely intelligent footballer. He was also stronger than Martinez. He Bossed Lukaku with ease.
Van Gaal also had his system drilled into our squad to perfection and Blind suited it perfectly.

Blind isn't better than Martinez. Too much knee jerk going on in here
