Only positive is he somehow got away with an absolutely nailed on penalty. My head would be exploding if VAR denied United a penalty in the same situation.

Yup and maybe a second yellow.

The bigger concern for me would be that header that he lost to a Brighton player that was nodded onto the penalty spot.

I could see that happening a lot this season.

Why would you need to do that if you can play him offside? Its Maguire who got caught square and took himself out of getting back with his body positioning stopping dead. Thats on him at that point

So when a striker makes a perfect run and is onside by a hair you want to blame the person who is meant to be our deepest player? Would you expect Maguire to be running forward? If so you're a fool. I can 100% guarantee you that had Martinez played him onside but Welbeck ran across Maguire and Maguire failed to track him, you'd be blaming Maguire. Look at the play and what happened and drop the agenda. If Maguire is at fault then blame him. Don't look for reasons to blame him because that's what is happening here...

He's new to the league and to the club so we need to give him time.

Even vidic looked shite in the beginning.

I don't think he will be rubbish in general. But about the examples above, does he play against them regularly? One or two off performances means nothing.

I am sure we can surely bring up some rubbish defenders from Spanish league when they kept the like of Messi and Ronaldo at their peaks quiet in some games to prove that kind of point.
Well considering Im replying to a poster judging him based off one game without a proper preseason…

Looked decent enough in his first PL match, but much better on the ball than in defending.

Welbeck bullied the pair of them. Danny Welbeck.
But one thing though, to me, it seems like Welback always plays a blinder against us.

Not that it is an excuse for the United backline which has been reinforcing every summer for the last decades or something and still playing like a league one side.

Yeah, it is completely ludicrous to blame Maguire for that goal. If he'd been miles behind the defensive line I could definitely get behind it but it's just a really well-timed run from Welbeck that should then have been dealt with better than it was.

Welcome to the Premier League!

Didn't really form a steady partnership with Maguire. Looked very shaky defensively all game. Got saved by shite standard of refereeing, with his needless body check in the box. Didn't really see any of this alleged great passing ability he is supposed to have - especially in first half he kept on passing it exclusively to Maguire. If he struggled that much against Danny Welbeck, I'm not looking forward to him facing some of the better forwards.

Won't judge him too harshly just yet, but for the amount we paid for him he needs to improve a lot and quickly.

He really should play as a DM, perfect for that role.

Him, eriksen and Fred in a midfield 3 makes a lot of sense in my head

I know the manager has ruled it out already, but from my layman’s eye I really don’t know why. I feel like most of his stronger attributes would be utilised more there and his weaknesses mitigated.

It was a bit of a scatterbrained performance. Some good passes, a stupid challenge in the box, some mistakes. This is kind of what I thought would happen with this guy, I don't see quiet games being in his dictionary. There is going to be plenty of action this season and hopefully as he settles it lands more on the good side of things.

"Meant to be our deepest player"

No, thats the goalkeeper. The CBs are supposed to have awareness and work as a team and to use the tools they have including offside. Dont speak on subjects you are clearly ignorant about

Shocking debut. Almost Evra bad. You can see the potential but he had a horrible time of it. Only positive is he somehow got away with an absolutely nailed on penalty. My head would be exploding if VAR denied United a penalty in the same situation.
Still waiting on you having a decent opinion on anything football related. In your own time mate.

He body checked someone in the box last season against Feyenoord as well withouth it bring a penalty. Smells like a conspiracy.

If you disagree with a single word of that post you’re a fecking idiot. So I’m guessing you disagree with most of it…

That's fair. After all you're a doctor so your IQ destroys his.

Sorry, but this guy is not going to make it in PL. Not just for us, for any PL team. He will be targeted and destroyed.

Waste of money, and for a position we didn't really need players. One of the worst transfers ever for us.

His performance today was as good if not better than anyhting we've seen from Maguire Lindelof & co for about 2 years.

He'll come good. It'll be him and Malacia taking the left side of that defence and the sooner the better.

He had both good and worrying moments. Looked excellent on the ball and was really aggressive and defending on the front foot.

On the other hand, his height was definitely an issue and he has average pace which is very concerning.

Will be more of the same up against Toney next week. He'll need to adapt quickly.

Bizarre to just chuck him in, it was a very cocky selection from EtH and it backfired.

Anyone coming to the premier league knows the level is higher than any other league but probably a bit of a eye opener on just how good the standard is. Many are touting brighton to be relegation fodder this season and still they play some lovely football. Shows the quality and aggression of this league. Will take time to get upto that level and the physicality.

Destined to be the new Blind. His champions will point to his ball playing skills whilst his distractors will point to his physical inadequacies and inability to defend.

Reasonable on the ball but that was a clear as day penalty on welbeck.
I hope he doesn’t have bailley levels of brainfarts …….

He looked ok.

But what was more worrying was you can see we are going to have a number of problems playing a high line with Maguire and Martinez as a pair.

Welbeck looked like prime Thierry Henry against them. There’s plenty more pacey forwards they are going to come up against.

Having FDJ as CDM won’t really help the problem. That aspect of the game was worrying. Brighton could have got more on the break.

Did alright and should get better with time. Looks very composed on the ball.

Far mire similar to Rojo than Blind

Not sure. Rojo was a tough competitor but with a very low footballing IQ. Martinez seems more like Blind to me. I suppose the similarity with Rojo and Martinez is that they're both Argentinian left footed centre backs brought in by Dutch managers to 'balance' the side in the Total Football philosophical sense.

I thought he was largely fine. Assured on the ball and, as usual, a victim of the midfield’s inability to do anything related to defending.

When all of Maguire, Varane and now Martinez are getting pelters for their defending, in spite of their success elsewhere both domestically and internationally, you need to start to consider that maybe, just maybe, they aren’t actually the issue…

For the money we paid.... Did he really improve our defence? I know it's just 1 game...

Looks like a Rojo regen from what I have seen till now. Jury's out still obviously

The hating on Martinez already is shocking. I thought he looked comfortable on the ball. He tried passing to the midfield in the first half but when they lost it immediately.
The 2 CBs were not the problem today. Dalot was a disaster and McFred never offers protection.
Jumping on the penalty challenge that wasnt given is just looking for reasons to give the guy a hard time.
There was many Utd players far worse than him today but yet all I see is "shocking debut"

Yeah, people are just having a whinge because of how the game went. There was nothing in his actual performance to criticise that harshly apart from the time he held onto the ball too long and had to take the yellow to get out of it.

After Eriksen, he was our least shit player.

I honestly can't comprehend how people watch/analyse games with some of the comments in here, do people just see the scoreline and decide defender = crap?

Some good moments. Some bad moments. Being his debut in a team where the entire front six played like they were strangers who had no idea what positions they were each supposed to play, while the fullback on his outside had an absolute shocker...I'll give him a pass mark for now.
