Other then the obvious connection with Pep, are there other reasons so many are so sure he would chose Cheaty? Sanchez did not, Maguire did not, even Fred, Pogba came here from a winning team, Sancho seems he want's to come. Some people seem to forget we are still Manchester United and we are on the up compared to the previous seasons. Liverpool would not have had any top players for 30 years if you go by how some think. Big clubs like United, Liverpoo, Barca, Real will always attract top talent regardless of what position they find themselves in.

City seemed to put their foot down with some of them deals and were trying to be a bit more frugal in the market, for whatever reason.

Now they're back on a mission to spend money if reports are to be believed. So the reasons are Pep, City being a better fit style wise, City being closer to trophies than us, and the money.

Is that... Glaston?!
We have a poster named @BarcaSpurs . Might be him.

Also what a butterfly effect for city, if they lost the CAS they are in with no chance of signing Messi, stupid UEFA being useless

No one would say even now that City are a bigger club than us. With Messi on board a genuine case can be made. The best player of all time + possibly the best manager of all time when Pep retires.
Messi on board doesnt make them a bigger club than us. Better at the moment, sure. But one transfer, even if it's arguably the best player in the world, doesnt change that.

If Messi leaves then I can only see City as his next club. PSG have Neymar and Mbappe, Chelsea / UTD / Inter are in transition, Pool and Juve can't afford him while City have Txiki, Soriano, Pep, Aguero etc. It's a no-brainer.

feck, i just realised. Few days ago i said that this is first summer ever when i am not a muppet. When Sancho deal failed (sort of) i accepted that we will not sign anybody (maybe someone for rotation) and that is that. I am not refreshing page 50 times per day and camping on transfer threads.

But now i am sucked in this which i know that there is less than 1% chance that it can happen. Ffs!

Ronaldo has done it before and knows he can perform anywhere. I dont see Messi ever risking his comfort zone.
Messi knows he can perform anywhere. Ridiculous to suggest otherwise. This is the new age fan who adores Ibra for moving clubs every 2 years and apparently feels the likes of Giggs, Zanetti, Messi and co are scared of playing elsewhere.

Would definitely be City. They could pay him even more than Barca, make an even bigger mockery of FFP and build a statue after he leaves in a few years. It would be a massive win for them in every aspwct and I think they would 100% break a bank for him.

Well, Messi has 2-3 years left before he returns to Argentina so if he leaves Barca now he can only join clubs where he can win everything.

They need a signing like this badly, it would make the difference on so many levels

Yeah spot on we have to respond to this surely
Honestly, i’d put in a test-the-waters offer right now. If he wins the court case (he should, as the season was elongated, so the deadline should be too), the deal will be for free, sweetening it further.

Messi isn’t silly and knows how hard and rough the Premier League is, why at 33 years old would you want to put yourself through that ? If he leaves Barca instead of the president then it’ll be for PSG or Inter and the City links are just lazy journalism based on Pep and a few directors being there.

PSG have the money, the heir apparent to Messi in Mbappe, his close friend in Neymar, a close friend in Di Maria, an easy league to win and a genuine shot at the Champions League seeing as they were runners up last season.

Inter on the other hand is a project that’s nearly ready in a bid to overhaul Juve at the top of Serie A, an easy league outside of Juve, they're back in the Champions League, they have Javier Zanetti as a major player in the boardroom and Messi could cement his status and end the debate with Ronaldo over greatest of all time by winning Serie A and putting Inter over the almighty Juve.

Although United are in transition, Sancho + Messi means United really aren't in transition, a CB and a squad player or two is all that's required at time, so having those players really aren't as far off as people make out.

If assurances were made e.g. Sancho is signing, Pogba is renewed the only issue is squad depth but having said that (Sancho + Messi) would mean Fred, Greenwood, Bruno, Matic would all be there either in the squad or rotating, the issue at that point would be a CB. Smalling being a stop-gap for the next season.

It gives the option of getting Lingard, Pereira, Mata off the books though, which means then a CB might be an option.

I really don't think United are in 'transition' as much if Sancho and Messi were bought, the team would be a title contender at that point, Ed needs to do everything possible to get Messi and Sancho honestly.

Grealish is clearly not going to be anywhere in the picture.

Tell that to the kids growing up and casuals. You can excuse City being better right now but having the best player in the history of the game playing for your rivals cannot be explained away.

If City end up getting Messi and we stumble about with Sancho and then don't sign him, I wouldn't even know what to think.
I’d condone the mob hammering his house and our fans chanting the unfortunate but necessary chants we did in January.

Why would someone like Messi need this? You don't think he's up for a challenge?

Argentina suggests otherwise.

Hes got absolutely nothing to gain by going to another competitive league.

I wish he goes to PSG or Inter. Can't see him coming to us and he'll ruin the PL if he signs for City.

Messi only follows 4 clubs on insta. Barcelona, Newells Old Boys, Man City and....Chelsea!!

It's feckin happening boys. Super Franky Lampard has gone and won his first PL title as a manager.

I think only certain PL fans think that.. otherwise there is no evidence of this. Messi himself has taken the best of the PL teams to task several times. You'd think he would be able to handle the rest of the teams too.

It's ok, we'll get Sancho.
City is already growing among casuals and kids and yeah it will grow even more if Messi comes. But they still have a longer way to be bigger than us trophies wise. Appeal sure, they have a lot more appeal right now sadly.

Thats not how football works though. Its too fleeting. You see this with aging stars all the time, talking about legitimacy or global appeal as a reason to sign them. It never works that way. You cant take any clubs history and transfer it to your own
Has signing Ronaldo made Juve this huge institution outaide of Italy? Did Ibra make PSG this global force?
Football fans have this habit of adding these over arching narratives to simple situations. Its really strange.

If needs to be - I'd sacrifice all other transfers to get Messi in.

Because he is Lionel messi and he more than likely believes in his ability. What is the only argument anyone ever has for Ronaldo being better than him? He’s only played for Barca. Hasn’t proved himself elsewhere. Can he do it on a Tuesday night in stoke?

He may want to put the greatest debate to bed once and for all.. what better way to do that than dominate the premier league? The best league in world football... it’s just a thought but if anyone football can do it, it’s messi.

I ultimately think he'll stay at barca but how do you line if you get him.

Awb maguire shaw
Fred mct
Pogba
Messi bruno rash
Martial.

Think you would need fred and mct behind to provide all the running and energy.

Tell awb to just defend.

Sure lets just go with:
DDG
AWB Maguire Shaw
Pogba Bruno
Messi Ronaldo
Mason Martial Rashford

Disneyland Ed!

Surely the solution here is that Barcelona accept they can't keep Messi against his wishes and a suitor, hopefully us, give them a reasonable offer to soften the blow, maybe £50-60 million.

No it doesn't. It suggests that individuals are either limited or springboarded by their teams and visa versa. It's as if you expect Messi to have the exact same output at Barcelona as he would at Stoke. I don't think he doubts he could tear it up for City in the PL. He's score more goals against England's top 6 than many who have played in this league

Of course he has lots to gain. Barcelona are in a terrible state so he may just benefit from going to a better team.

Where are the wing backs?

Can see him going Inter Miami

I personally think at 33 years old the PL move has gone, he'd still be great but PL is almost too frantic and physical and everyone's now starting to press and maintain a press as long as possible - Messi has had a free role for so long I can't see it being a move where he enjoys the league, the style of football or, to be frank, living in the UK (particularly if in Manchester).

Might sound crazy but I'm not as convinced that Messi would be a success here as others are. He's often pretty ineffective for Argentina. Not only that but watching him vs Bayern, he obviously didn't have his head in it or something because he was pretty crap really. There are minor warning signs there, if he does leave then I think his heart really needs to be in it or else it might not work out how some are presuming it will.
Totally agree with this. I think his world cup none appearances show that unless the whole team is setup for the Messi show he doesn't perform.

He is totally a comfort zone player and whilst he will take apart a fulham that tries to play nice he will get kicked off the pitch in most games in the premier league.

I hope City do sign him as I think it will be a massively retrograde step for them and he would destroy their team ethic.

Do not want

This is so so wrong.

Maybe that is exactly the reason for him to move here: to challenge himself. Not to have a free ride, but to get challenged to the highest extent possible in club football

Wtf? A United fan wouldn’t mind one of the GOATs at Man Shitty? I couldn’t care less how he fares — obviously he’ll rip it up. I do not want him there at all.

past it Goat. Bring it on i'd say. Plenty of people are questioning him, only way to find out is if he comes to the PL
