This is a move to get the president to resign so the elections can be called earlier.

The new president will have Xavi as the manager and Messi will stay.

I cannot see Messi going anywhere else.

Surely the solution here is that Barcelona accept they can't keep Messi against his wishes and a suitor, hopefully us, give them a reasonable offer to soften the blow, maybe £50-60 million.

If Messi can win the court case and walk into City on a free transfer, why would he let Barca entertain offers from clubs he has no interest in?

I think he’s not going to leave the club he runs. It’s a battle for power. Messi runs the club, Bartomeu gets the stick. Elected vs shadow government.

Of course, as things stand in social network driven world (read Barca), Messi is going to win. Legally, he can’t use contract termination clause until June 2021. Thus, his bureau fax is a declaration of war, not a way out.

Barca lemmings will follow their leader. Messi is destroying the great club.

A lesson for every club: “The Club is always bigger than a player” principle should be enforced and maintained at all costs.

it's 7 months till the election, seems like one hell of an over reaction when it's basically a done deal that Xavi will be the next coach.

I swear to God if the press report him signing for city as a free signing compared to how they treated us when we had a swap deal for Sanchez (reporting it as 100’s of millions) I’ll go mad.

This is a strange one, if his contract says he has to inform the club by May that he wants to leave it seems pretty cut and dry. Unless there's a clause that says that can be extended in the event of a global pandemic. Surely Messi's team knows this. On the other hand, City get off with a slap in the wrist over FFP violations and are immediately linked with Messi - you couldn't make it up.

I suppose it would be filed under a force majeure? But who knows.

The reason for all of this is to get the existing president to resign early and have an early election. As in now, so that they do not have to wait 7 months.

All of the old guard want that to happen, which is why you have seen Pique, Suarez all come into Messi's defence.

I am only presuming this will happen, I do not think Messi will leave.

If City get him it would be another slap to Uefa. Just avoided ban for FFP and boom; insane spending plus Messi.

The wording In the clause may refer to something like “between end of season and 10th of June”. In this case, given the season has been extended, his lawyers may actually win the court case. We need to know the exact wording in the contract (which, of course, we don’t know)

That City legal team taking on Bartomeu in court would be absolutely hilarous.

past it Goat. Bring it on i'd say. Plenty of people are questioning him, only way to find out is if he comes to the PL

Past it? The guy got 25 goals in 33 games in La Liga last season in a dying team. Imagine the hype if Rashford scored that many...

Koeman's off to a great start anyway, uniting the dressing room like this! If Messi gets his way then Koeman could be out of the job sooner than expected.

More and more reports from Spain and Argentina about Messi repeatedly talking to Pep and Aguero recently. Really looks like it's only between staying at Barca or joining City.

None of those reports were before Messi did what he has and City are distancing themselves from it all. Sounds like it’s coming from camp Messi which only furthers my belief this is a power play. Now, if you do a power play you have to be prepared to follow through so he may still end up at City but most likely result for me is Bartomeu resignation, elections brought forward and Messi staying.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Messi reunited with Pep but at Barca next season.

It's City or getting Xavi installed as coach. The only two options that have likely outcomes.

So, he hates Koeman already, is that it? Messi doesn't get that his pal RatFace is done as an elite CF.

Apparently Koeman really rubbed Messi the wrong way in the talk they had together. I think the traditional Dutch bluntness and straight forward style was too much for him.

Although it would be incredible to see him at Utd, it’d feel hugely satisfying if he went to City, we got Sancho and Sancho outperformed him in every tangible metric (including the most important, winning trophies!).

Would still want to see him here, but think we’re probably 4/5th choice. I’d imagine staying at Barca is most likely, followed by City/PSG. We’re probably in the mix with Inter/Juve as next most likely.

That's why Real Madrid is way more successful then Barcelona. Ronaldo also tried for Powerplay and Madrid sold him.

Everybody knows what is going on. Messi wants the President sacked

A lesson for all clubs in the future : Don't let Player power become out of control

So, after the 2-8 and the 4-0 at Anfield he can't endure some bluntness? Spoiled ex-GOAT millionare.

Because the court case could drag on well into the season which no party has any interest in. It would be a compromise for all parties for the interested club to give Barca a relatively small transfer fee.

If he is genuinely wanting out, he must have a club that has said they want him and maybe even agreed unofficially, his wages.

The thing that makes a transfer so difficult is his wages. Then the actual Barca exit.

Seeing as only a few clubs can afford his wages he must have agreed something with someone?
