Just looked at the last couple of pages and you seem to be adamant in defense of Messi and his desire to leave. As a Barcelona fan, in this current situation, would you be happy if
a) Messi leaves for City for free?
b) Messi stays but refuses to play feigning injury for the remainder of his contract?
c) Messi stays and plays but you can clearly see he's only giving like 50%?

d) Messi stays and performs at the level he always has, because he has a certain amount of professional pride.

Is this discussion on Messi a court room, where we are only hearing from the prosecution. I mean wtf is going on here

I don't fanboy over players, not least players that are not our own. So I couldn't give a shit about what Messi does over there in Barcelona. I am just fascinated by the poster's adamant defense and wanted to hear up to what point he would still be happy with in regards to what Messi does from now on.
 
He'll be going to Miami next season it seems. They have a deal with Beckham with a big financial package to barely pay taxes anymore. And the lifestyle. He feels persecuted by the Spanish tax authorities.

It's bizarre to suggest that Messi has wasted the best years of his career on the basis that they haven't won more CL trophies while winning La Liga and Copa del rey almost every season....If they had an utter collapse and suddenly stopped competing for trophies, then yes.

A lot of people are getting overly defensive about Messi, which is a bit weird considering it’s a United forum. The guy comes across as an absolute **** in my opinion and completely out for himself.

Probably because many would hold Messi in a better light than Ronaldo because of his manor outside of football. Ronaldo is arrogant about his ability and also had the potential rape charge. Messi was always seen as the blue eyed boy by many and this dispute simply proves he’s just as much a primadonna as the rest of modern football. Want to leave? Don’t sign a multimillion euros contract. Ask to leave before the date the contract states in writing. Why would he expect Barcelona to let him go for free when he has another year? Someone’s word means nothing in the world of business.

Being the best player in the world means he should move? For instance Ronaldo only moved to advance his career to get to Madrid, and then when Madrid wouldn’t pay for him any more. If he doesn’t want to go elsewhere because he loves where he is, that’s surely just the kind of person he is, it doesn’t make him a lesser player, it’s absurd. That kind of loyalty is what we suggest is missing from the game and people in here are suggesting it’s a flaw. He has given all his best years to one club. A very successful one sure but he’s a major part of that.

How about this, he cares so much about Barca, and sees, despite his efforts winning them titles 90% down to him, that they’re in massive trouble and he wants board members out and to help them get back on the right track, because he cares? He finally reached the end of his tether and realised he only had another couple of seasons to win another European cup so now he is trying to leave. His genuine efforts to leave seem to be ignored here too.

Think most will side with him and blame the current president
The next president will probabky be whoever can persuade messi to come out and stay he will stay if they win the election.
Be interesting to see how he gets on with koeman as well but I expect a new president to give messi a new contract that ties him to the club and to bring in xavi as manager before the end of the season

The issue is that anyone that has openly an issue with Bartomeu and the board has a point and a popular one too, so it would be very strange if a majority of fans turned against Messi. But with Football fans you never know.

I am still not understanding what he has done wrong. He has openly questioned the ambition and the project of the board. He has made it clear he wants to be competing for titles. If anything the fans will back him, as the board is an absolute shit show. Greizemann, Coutinho, Dembele. How much money they have blown

He's asking to leave on a free transfer because he thinks his team mates are too shit. Not exactly fighting for the colours.

They've spent a fortune, he can't question their ambition.

As we know it’s not how much has been spent. It’s getting the right players and probably more important in Barcelona’s case getting the right coach. They’ve made one bad appointment after another and gradually the players haven’t been able to compensate.

Fully agree. You can even argue what their board has done is the same as what our incompetent shower have done. It's seemingly only in the past 12 months we have started to see a more strategic approach from Utd.

Two massive cubs both poorly run in recent years. Good on Messi for calling them out.

Spent a fortune on shite. If I was Messi and I was looking at the players I was playing with week in week out, I would question wtf is going also. I commend him. If only someone had the balls to have done the same on Woodward 4-5 years ago we may have been in a much stronger position

They've still spent a fortune though, he can't honestly say they've lacked ambition or been stingy. At the time, everyone thought Dembele and co were great signings.

If the board all quits, what does he expect, another 300 million chucked at the first team?

You don't get it because you don't read properly.

The letter sent by Messi's father which says he can leave for free, it doesn't mention the any amount or compromise, the fact that his father spoke to journos saying difficult difficult and Messi in the interview blaming Barca who is an employer is stooping to low IMHO and why should Barca accept anything less than 700, they might have considered if the offer was around 200 million which is fair price but no where the figure was quoted all the news was Messi gets sign on fee, another fat pay cheque at PL and then to US. It is more than money of Barca, the club had their worst defeat and they wouldn't like their best player leaving in a pandemic year with a new season few weeks away and lot of other stuff to deal with a new manager, squad management. Imagine Messi leaving without replacement, election havoc and Barca ending up outside top 4, which is a real possibility. What good is 150 million then?

Barca behaved professionally without going to media and nuisance like team Messi, I think only some physio of Barca said he would like Messi to stay like an request. Messi behaved like he can do whatever he can with some stupid clause which should never be there.
 
I still wouldn’t be surprised if he goes to City in this window for something over £100M.
Too many bridges have burned for him to stay imho.

It's more about competency than spending money. Barcelona have been a shamble for a while, I personally think that the influence of Messi is part of the issue with the board more focused on pleasing/not upsetting him than doing the right thing which is to build a coherent team. Money isn't everything, you need to spend it coherently and at least give the impression that you have a plan which hasn't been the case in Barcelona since 2014/2015.

I really hold posters in disdain who turn everything into Messi vs Ronaldo. It’s so pointless. Also bringing a potential charge into an argument is very distasteful.

You are also wrong on someone’s word, verbal contracts are enforceable by law - obviously not in every situation, and clearly you need to prove it.
 
Said nothing about this being his last season so will probably become a tool of Laporta or Fonte and if one of them wins then he'll sign 3 year extension. On the other hand, would be absolutely hilarious if Rosell's puppet wins the elections.

Yeah, but surely verbal agreements doesnt supercede actual signed documents?
 
Interesting read this, how Messi is being commended is amazing. Apparently it seems to some he didn’t want to go on a free, although according to Messi, he requested to leave based on clause he believed was still valid, which would have allowed him to leave on a free transfer.
Rooney was labeled a cnut for pulling a stunt like this, not Messi though
 
Also I don't really get the Ronaldo comparison, he made his wishes to leave Madrid public too, the difference is that Madrid accepted it and made a reasonable deal with an other club. It's not surprising that Bartomeu and his cronies would act differently, after all he was Rossell's vice president.

That's an interesting question in theory when verbal agreements are legally accepted in Contract Law the answer is often no, it doesn't supercede. The issue is that you need to prove that this verbal agreement exists which is difficult in particular if you didn't mention it to a third party.
