Messi is the best in the world, it's not even about opinion because it's fact. Check my profile and you'll see that Ronaldo's my favourite player. There's no point trying to deny that Messi is the best though.

I like how the two camps always keep a balanced view when it comes to internet arguments.

"Ronaldos been rubbish against big teams for years"...

I believe Messi is the closest we've been to a player with a chance of being remembered as one of the greats for years, but Ronaldo was better than him last year. And Ronaldo has had several excellent games against the big sides. Besides, has there ever been a player who hasn't had that argument thrown at him? Could it be because it's more difficult to shine against the toughest opponents? Completely ridiculous.

Roy Keane, Zidane, Goofy Ronaldo, Rivaldo to name a few all big match players, have always delivered when the stakes were high. Giggs was a better big match player than Ronaldo. On a side note Messi is currently the best big match player at the moment.

I don't think it is correct to suggest the players you have mentioned always played to their potential in every big game they played which I guess is what your infering in your post.

Some examples of this can be:

Roy Keane at his peak being outshone by Fernando Redondo in the Champions League QF 2000.

Rivaldo struggling to cope with the pressure of having to carry Brazil to the 2002 World Cup on his own due to Ronaldo being out injured for a large period of the qualifying campaign.

Kaka not making a significant impact in the Champions League SF 2006 for Milan against Barcelona. Kaka also drifted out from the World Cup that year without making a big impression.

I mention Kaka because he was able to make amends the year after by being pivotal in AC Milans victorious Champions League campaign in 2007 which shows there are always going to be low points and high points in a players career, things can change very quickly.
You can always look at a players career and find moments where you could accuse them of not stepping up to the plate when required imo.

it's funny how even United's own supporters are starting to make claims about Ronaldo "going missing in big matches". He showed up in plenty of big matches between 2006-2008.

do you lot really hate Ronaldo that much? It's fine if you don't like him, just don't make false accusations. You all know better, because you all have actually watched those matches.

Don't you think that's just a tad hypocritical from someone who only really started following Arsenal after 2002?

Nope.

I didn't start supporting Arsenal because they were winning and the 'bestust everz,' hell they didn't even win anything that season anyway - I started watching games because Freddie played for them.

They were always my 'team,' from back in grade three or four, where we had a substitute teacher from London who kept telling us to go for Arsenal. That's when I picked the side. Post WC 2002 was when I started watching/following religiously.

No one in particular, I think...

Just for the record; I have no problem with people who doesn't start supporting a team until their late teens, but I do have a problem if said people go around with a houlier than thou attitude, calling other fans glory-hunters.

Read above.

And like I said in the quoted posts I was just trying to wind Cal up. I've called him a glory hunter many times, he's rebutted it, and it goes on.

No biggy.

Just for future reference in this thread for all those (Cal) dismissing Messi's form/goals and performances due to the opposition being rubbish:

Out of Ronaldo's 13 League goals this season we've got (pinched this off another forum):
A penalty against Liverpool,
3 against West Brom,
2 against West Ham, Stoke and Hull,
1 against Bolton, Everton and Blackburn.

Now obviously someone has to put the ball into the back of the net, but if you're going to go on about how crap the opposition are when Messi scores at least acknowledge it goes the other way too.

And obviously this doesn't take into account the actual level of performances for Ronaldo. It is possible (Cal) for players to have awesome games without contributing on the scoreboard.

Just came across this:

Probably already been posted, but it's fairly amusing that he's currently making defenders look just as inept.

Ronaldos been rubbish against big teams for years and you spout that bile. Suppose at least messi is 21 and can change your opinion rather easily. Once that happens it'll be Messi >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Ronaldo even in the eyes of the fanbois for ever more.

That would be the same Ronaldo who scored against Chelsea, L'Arse and the dippers last season, including in the biggest football game of the year?

I see.

I have said many times Messi is having a better season than Ronaldo, however, if you'd like to look at Ronaldo's stats from last season, you'd see why he is the best player in the world (even if he's having a below par season).

So Ronaldo's underperforming, United accidentally lose two games and Cal mysteriously disappears.

Coincidence?

*Greetings from Tokyo...*

The fact I have no interest at all in the international game and planned my holiday during the international week is not a coincidence at all.

Hehe, you know I was just taking the piss.

Whats wrong with those sides?!! Except fot West Brom they have all been tough games... And yes like youhave said it is possible for players to have good games without scoring, taking the Chelsea game for example!

As for Messi he's easly the best player this season, but i still wouldn't say his more talented than Ronaldo!! I'll stay by that too

The question of who is better has never been about talent, everyone knows Messi is the more talented...

Im sure Giggs was like that at 5 too! Doesn't really prove anything!! His 5

So why don't you love Ronaldo, if your so up for loving Genuises

1. Ronaldo is not a genius - his footballing intelligence pales in comparison with that of Messi, Scholes, Bergkamp, etc...
2. He represents everything that is wrong with the modern day footballer - diving, rolling about on the floor, whining, whoring himself, etc...
3. Through the eyes of Ronaldo, Ronaldo > United.

I can see why you'll never think he's a genius!! If Messi is a genuis then so is Ronaldo!

He might not be as smart as some other player but he'll be a far greater player than Scholes and Bergkamp! What also makes you think Messi is so intelligent i don't know, he looks the odd one out next to Scholes and Bergkamp, they'd school him in terms of footballing brain!

Ok.

Genius is being thrown around too readily. Not sure any of Bergkamp, Messi or Scholes would be classed as such on the grandscale of the game.

Oh, and C.Ronaldo is definitely no genius, either.

Take it you have nothing to add then!! Don't blind yourself!! As great as Bergkamp was and Scholes is there never going to be considered in Ronaldo's league!! Just how it is!!

It's going to take more than 1 season of magic and 1 season of unbelievable productivity for Ronaldo to be ranked higher than those two. He's still got a lot to do.

He's been hot for like 3 seasons now! He's had a poor season this year but will probably still be in the team of the year! So lets say he's been performing well for 4 seasons! Can't really see where he'll need to take it from here to go above those too. If he has a good season next year as just playing better than this season, he'll probably be the greatest player ever in the Premier league!

He had a fairly good debut season, then blew hot and cold until about March 2006, where he really started to look excellent. He then had an absolutely unbelievable season throughout 06/07, followed by a stupidly impressive display of goalscoring last season. This year, he's been possibly our worst performer in well over half of the matches he's played, despite scoring his share of goals.

In regards to that last comment, not only are you assuming that he'll be here next year, but you're also failing to take into account that this league has had the pleasure of hosting Thierry Henry.

If by genius we define it as sublime understanding of the game as it happens in ways others simply can't see, I'm not sure I would class messi as that either.

Cruyff and Maradona obviously set the high bar, but I would also include the likes of Bergkamp, Laudrup and Dalglish in that.

I think Messi is there already, he's by far the best player in the world this year and be it for Barca or Argentina he stands out.

Other genius players i'd say Baggio, Platini, Van Basten and a lot more.

That's a more agreeable bunch to me, although Bergkamp is a notch below Laudrup and Dalglish and a few below Cruyff and Maradona.

Baggio, Ronaldinho, Zidane, Ronaldo, Rivaldo are the few who fit the bill for me over the last 15 or so years.

Henry is the best Premier league player there has ever been, can't argue with that. Yes i am assuming that he stays another season and if he does and performer at the level of say 06/07 they i think he will be considered better than Henry! He would have been here for just as long dont know about his goal ratio but he would have won more medals!
