Best player in the world as voted by football fans & everyone else in football!

How you rate Messi higher than Ronnie is beyond me. Ronnie's the most complete forward player i have ever seen & that is echo'd by millions aswell!

That makes him the best footballer in the world for 2008.

Means he had the best season, doesn't make him the best player now, seeing as it's 2009.

No, it's up to the players to stay away from systematic fouling and diving.

No, that's the ref's job.

Players are on the pitch to win games, not to be nice.

Messi's fault or referee's fault for failing to spot it?

Both.

Messi for cheating, the ref's fault for not seeing it.

You're making an argument with no basis here, players shouldn't be defended for diving or pre-meditated fouling, nor should the blame be passed on to the referees.

First and foremost, it's the players' fault.

Clearly it should be upto the refs to apply the laws of the game.

What if a player deemed a situation necessary to foul and think that the red card is acceptable (take one for the team)? eg. Ole in 1998. Surely it's upto the ref.

So your sayin Ronnie isnt the best player in the world now, so does he have to give the trophy to Messi then?

Listen man, you like Messi fair enough, but i'd take a super-human footballer like Ronnie anyday of the week then a guy who only dribbles!

Ronnie gives so much more to the team than Messi ever could!

No, I'm saying he will do in 10 months when the awards are given out again.

He does a lot more than dribbling though, which is pretty much all Ronaldo has done this season incidentally...

Such as...?

When Messi wins the Ballon d'Or this year, watch Ronaldo propel himself to ridiculous heights due to his insatiable desire to be the best.

It seems each year he's working on a different facet of his game. When he interlocks them all together - look out world - you'll be witnessing the greatest player to ever play football.

I'd said for years Ronaldo would become the best player due to his 'winning' mentality, that and his want to become the very best. But I don't see how he'll ever re-take the mantle off Messi.

Anyway, I'm hoping your name is Leigh Matthew's inspired?

Mate you haven't watched him then, because you're DEAD wrong regarding Messi.

Anyway, Ronaldo was awarded the WPoTY due his previous efforts. It means he was the best player over the course of that time, since then (and really at the back-end of) Messi's raised the bar.

When Messi wins the award it will be because he's the best player ATM, provided he continues on with this form.

Messi is currently the best player in the world. Did any of you argue that Kaka was the best player in the world at this time last season because he won the useless personal awards for the previous season?

It's funny, for years these World Player of the Year awards were derided because they were virtually a closed shop for anyone playing outside Italy or Spain, and they'd often pick players on reputation rather than actual achievement during the year. And now because someone we like has won, they're the definitive accurate declaration of who's the best :wenger:

There's no-one in the world playing better than Messi right now, whatever any awards may say, he's the best. I just hope if we progress to play Barca in the latter stages of the Champions League, he has an off day. Not that likely this season

I hope Barca don't make the latter stages.

There's this Shitty supporter (you know the type, thinks it's O.K. to sing Munich songs during minutes silence etc) who, unfortunately, has to come into my office on a monthly basis. Last month he made a point of interrupting me to tell me that Kaka was signing that day, Arshavin the next and Santa Cruz the day after that. :wenger: Anyway, I was just outside having a fag and he came past. He's now told me that Messi will definitely be signing for Shitties in the summer!!!!!! So, you've heard it here, first. After asking him about Kaka and the others, I just told him that I'll invite him to my party next week, after my ordination as Pope. What a fecking dickhead he is.:rolleyes:

Its what you did in that year - 2008 in Ronnies case!

He's a great player Cesc i'm not denying that - only a fool would. He has to keep his form up for the rest of the year like Ronnie did last year!

Its a fecking shame that we've all been crying out for Ronnie to get lavished with Best Player in the World tag, and when he does - you's lot are all sayin Messi is instead!

You cant call yourself the Best until you get official recognition like Ronnie did. He only got that recognition last month ffs & now you lot are taking it away from him after only 1 month

Regardless, I wouldnt swap Ronnie for Messi - Ronnie's more tools in his locker!

Ronaldo deservedly won the award for 2008. Since then, he's been overtaken by a better player.

I think only mu fans and portugese people would agree with that by now. Messi is out of this world.

Exactly!

Cal? will be telling us that Kaka was the best player in the world last season, after all he was WPOTY and did pick up the champions league the season before

Hm, I wonder how many people would say the same thing.

Would anyone here just take a straight swap, no money involved, for Messi and Ronaldo?

Messi, in an instant.

So your sayin Ronnie isnt the best player in the world now, so does he have to give the trophy to Messi then?

Rubbish effort!

I wouldn't swap Ronaldo for any player in the world. I believe that Rooney and Ronaldo are our most important partnership and they're not as good without one of them. Keep them both and we'll be unbeatable for the next decade. It is easy to buy quality players, but much more difficult to groom a partnership with two world class players.

i may agree with you that Ronaldo is the better player, but to say that messi only dribbles is a dangerous underestimation that i hope fergie doesn't make if we happen to play against them

excellent point

ronaldo already proved he can play for us

messi, even if you consider him a better player, didnt

I wouldn't worry, Fergie really isn't that stupid! :D

It certainly can, Forlan, Kanoute being some examples.

How about Cantona, Zola, Bergkamp etal...rejects from better leagues ending up as some of the greatest players in England and also raised the quality of the league. Carew was rubbish at Valencia does a good job at Villa.

Forlan, Kanoute struggling in the premiership yet delivering in Spain or Hleb being rubbish at Barca yet was good in premiership.

Infact the greatest player ever to play in the premiership the great Thiery Henry was a reject from Juventus and even with reputation and expereince, he struggled to find his foot at Barcelona last season. It can go either way.

No. Have you have forgotten last season already?

Ronaldo outshone Messi by an order of magnitude last season and is about on a par so far this season. This season can be judged at the end of the season as per usual.

Ronaldo had a better season granted but Messi was often crocked up, inspite of frustrating midseason breaks with injuries he was still head and shoulders above the rest whenever he was match fit.

Messi is without doubt the best player in the world at this moment. Now not hampered by injury he is doing this season what Ronaldo was doing last season in terms of goalscoring and impact. Messi will want to put the icing on top of the cake this season though by contributing to a Champions League victory for his club just like Kaka and Ronaldo in the last few seasons, however he probably won't even need to do this to secure the 2009 Ballon D'or.

I heard Eidur Gudjohnsen speaking on radio this week saying that Messi is on course to go down in history alongside Pele and Maradona, this opinion is growing everyday. Regarding today's generation of top players there is a feeling that it will soon become 'Messi and then everyone else'.
If Messi goes on to prove for the next 7/8 years that he is on a different planet to even great players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Torres, Rooney, Ibrahimovic etc... then we will have witnessed someone truly special.
There will be no shame in Ronaldo being the 'best of the rest' if Messi really is that good like so many people feel he is and will be.

what's so funny? the fact that he's mentioned an English player? I would have Rooney over Kaka, Torres and Ibra any day.

Rooney has hardly been the best player in a trophy winning team or the best player in the league or the best player in a top tournament.....to mention him in the same sentence as other players is premature.

Your preference for a player is irrelevant. Liverpool fans would prefer Carragher over Rio ...does that make Carragher the better defender ?

Euro 2004, name a better player than him. And that was aged 18.

Age shouldn't matter here.

Baros, Ruud, Ronaldo, Nedved to name a few.

Had Rooney stayed away from injuries and carried his form to the knock out stages he would've been the best player in the tourney. Scoring only against the likes of Croatia and Swizterland in group stages does not translate to dominating a tournament.

He showed he had the ability, but far cry from being called the best in that Euros.

Rooney so far has played in two major tournaments...brilliant in Euro 2004, whenever he played and England would've progressed to the finals if not for his injury, mediocre in WC 2006 when he wasn't match fit. He has at least four more big internatinational tournaments to go, to prove his mettle.
